Dear Ones,

re: egg whites in a carton: in addition to SCD concerns, I know I red

about them in Cook's Illustrated, probably a product test, and was not

then tempted to buy them. Ok, just re-viewed it in Cook's: they had

good results with one brand, but recommended against Egg Beaters and

Pappetti brand of egg whites. They did ok with one brand, Eggology,

however there's a real probability that those are not SCD legal; I

know NOTHING about the brand , and use regular eggs.

Marilyn: what beagle?

I know you as Mom to Dachsunds!

sorry to hear about your glasses/ lack thereof.

I think you hit the nail on the head -- didn't realize you were using

egg whites from a carton. Technically they should be fine, but

obviously they aren't working for you. Definitely try 'real' eggs and

see what happens.

Amelia

P.S. I am too impatient, I have never let my eggs come to room

temperature before whipping and I haven't had a problem yet.

Ruth, I can't take credit for creating the recipe, only reposting

it :-).

, are you using an electric mixer? My little hand mixer has 9

speeds, and I use 7 to beat the egg whites until stiff. Then I take

the heated honey (I mix the salt and flavor in the honey), and drizzle

it in with the mixer running on 1.

I've tried a million times to beat egg whites still but I just can't

get it to happen! Everytime I add the honey the sizzle back into liquid.

>

I've been using pasteurized egg whites from a carton, so maybe i'll

try using old eggs from the fridge and let them sit to room temp. I'm

thinking the pasteurized whites are my problem. Sounds REALLY good

though!

On the night after my Mom's memorial service, the family went out to eat.

Right. Seafood restaurant. On Friday. In New Orleans. Equals hurry up and

wait. We got in late.

I got out of the car and walked up the ramp, set my cane down and

unlocked the door. I started to step into the house and tripped over

something that hadn't been there when I walked up: a seven month old

beagle puppy, shivering with the cold and scared half to death.

I brought her in; Harry released Shadow and Sunny one at a time so they

could sniff her. She was introduced to raw food and concluded that this

was food as she wished to know it.

She is... a beagle. " Here it is... here it is! Come get it, and

me! " she bays. She shrieks like murder if left alone, even if the

other dogs are with her. (We believe she was abandoned in our

neighborhood, and that may be why.) She's tried to turn my CPAP mask into

a dog toy. (And won herself some discipline from Shadow, who informed her

that making Missy scream was Bad.) She's driven my poor Sunny to

distraction. And somehow, she got my glasses off the nightstand, and

chewed the temple pieces off. $110 for new frames. We have had to install

41 " high gates in the hall (to keep her out of the bedroom) and in

the living room to keep her out of a number of books. The 36 " high

ones we had for the dachshunds were too low for a dog with flubber on her

paws.

She's just finished her first season, and may settle down a bit. She will

be neutered as soon as the vet thinks it advisable. (Vet recommended,

because of her age, waiting until after the season, so we wouldn't have

an eternal teenager.)

She's cute, and she's very needy, and she's having to be trained NOT to

get in my lap unless invited. And no, she doesn't sleep on the bed with

us. She sleeps in a crate. The one time I didn't put her in the crate was

when she got my glasses.

Her name is Babette. I told Harry he should have dubbed her

Nanette, since I spend all my time saying, " No, No! " She hates

that N word.

She's cute. She's sweet. And y'know what? For a free dog, she's darned

expensive! (Like Shadow and Sunny, she thinks SCD food was designed for

And remember how I was asking about raw food for cats a while back? My parents are finally on board, and we're gradually weaning her onto raw food! YAY!!!! I am SO super excited. Mom's scared of salmonella, which I can understand, since she's been on kibble her whole life, so we're very gradually increasing the amount of raw chicken we give her. Luckily, I think she also has concluded that this is food as she wishes to know it =) Peace =)Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Azathioprine 50 mg 1x per dayPrednisone 35 mg 1x per day

Really?

Because the variety of raw food I bought for my cat (nature's variety - the only

commercial one he'll eat so far) just sent around a voluntary recall for

possible

samonella contamination.

I've got to remember to bring that stuff back this week - the cat actually did

get

really sick, so I was thinking maybe that was it - but it may have been more

chronic liver ailment, or possibly die off from some stuff I was giving him at

the

time.

If your Dad decides he'd like Babette I'll bet it would be an ideal

partnership for both. My SIL lost her DH a few years ago and for her next

birthday her daughter gave her a bichon frise puppy. I must say, this has

been a truly wonderful thing for her -- and of course for one

pampered dog, too!

And now the Beaglette. My Dad's considering adopting her after she's neutered.

What Dr. Sagrera told me was that she had never had an animal get sick

from fresh raw food. She did put one caveat on that -- she had one, who

was already sick when he got hold of some older chicken.

I don't, for instance, feed Shadow and Sunny (or Babette) chicken that

smells to high heaven. But they are unlikely to have a problem with a

level of salmonella that would have me puking my guts out.
