Do I ever know the "for a free dog [insert "cat," however] she's darned expensive!"A few years ago we took in our one and only stray who sort of literally knocked on our patio door (our other five cats were adopted from shelters). Roo had either been bitten in the neck or snagged on barbed wire, as she had a deep, foul-smelling, highly infected abscess; and she was in an early stage of pregnancy (at about 9 months old). Since the no-kill shelter simply couldn't take her and we knew the local pound would have euthanized her, we took her in. Or I should say we "bought" her -- a few days and $500+ later she was ours for keeps. And then there's our expensive current cat problem: For any of you who believe in the power of prayer, I would invite you to pray for one of our other cats, 3-year-old Hedwig, who we got last August. (Nothing weird, I say, about praying for animals; they are marvelous creations of God, and he cares what happens to them.) Hedwig has a large growth on her side, and raised calcium levels, which could likely indicate a cancerous tumor. We'll find out for sure after a biopsy the week after next. The poor thing was abused earlier in life (and is still quite timid because of it); I so hate to think that she'll have to suffer more....  n______________________________A funny, touching gift book for cat lovers. " And then there was Bub, the rescue cat, who had a hand-sized third degree burn on the side of his neck. We went from 4 cats in 2000 to no cats in 2001 -- the four were 18, 19, 18, and 19. I politely requested a cat-spirit capable of coping with the very active dachshund duo, but apparently, no one volunteered for the job. I'm not entirely certain, however, that Starblaze and Tamuamaraq didn't send the beagle to drive Shadow and Sunny crazy in their senior years, just as Shadow and Sunny drove them crazy. We also had five cats in residence after Hurricane Katrina -- the cats belonging to friends whose apartment flooded. Her work put them up in a hotel, but the hotel refused to take the cats, and threatened them with a $100 a day per cat penalty if the cats were found in the hotel. (Needless to say, THAT chain of hotels will never have my business!) So their cats lived with us for several months.
