Too Much Weight

Hi, Everyone,

Russ here.

OK - It's finally time for me to ask the weight

question.

I have been steadily gaining weight on this lovely

Prednisone, and I want to STOP ! !

I have gone from 185 to 250, and from a pants size of

32 to 48! I DON'T WANT TO GAIN ANY MORE! ! !

Do any of you have any suggestions on getting this

weight off while on Pred? I am taking 10mg of

Methotrexate, and only taking the Pred when I have a

flare. Dr. Herman says I should not concern myself

with the weighty problem right now. We will look at

that later. But I keep looking at it now, because it

is getting easier to see all of it.

So, any ideas on diet, what to eat and what not to

eat, what exercise to do and how much.

Anything any of you can offer will be greatly

appreciated. I must do something, because the next

time the Phone Bandit calls, I will not be able to

waddle over to the phone to get the cal.

Thanks,

Russ

Hi, Russ - I think we all sympathise with your

problem, because we have all been there!!! I don't

think there is just one answer, but what I do is try

to increase my general activity (e.g. not saving

everything for one trip upstairs, taking everything

separately, and therefore going up and down more). i

have an exercise bike in front of the TV and try and

get on it when I want to watch something. The hardest

thing to deal with is the carbohydrate cravings, I try

(emphasis on try) to eat fruit and non-fat yogurt

rather than chocolates and ice cream, although I am

not always successful!! The other thing is try and

increase veggie intake, as that fills you up. A

dietician doctor I know in Beverly Hills suggests for

kids smothering veggies in tomato ketchup - it may

help those of us who are not that keen on straight

greens!!

None of this will make a dramatic difference, but

overall IT DOES HELP. I also find when I am on higher

doses of pred I have more energy so I am able to

exercise more. Only you can decide how much exercise

you can do, but if you build up making increases of 10

minutes aerobic (i.e.walking, swimming, cycling,most

days of the week) plus somemoderate weights 3 or 4

times per week.

You could ask your rheumy about increasing your metho,

I wasn't able to start reducing pred until my metho

dose was about 17.5. I haven't had to go over 10mg

pred for about 18 months, and have had no big flares,

just, moderate ones which respond quickly to a small

increase in pred.

Hope this is of some help, but as your doc says, don't

worry about it too much, it is one of the things we

have to deal with long term. Feel better, love Liz

Russ, I agree with you... I want to STOP gaining too. I thought that by

decreasing my pred the weight would magically fall off... NOT!! Guess once

the fat is deposited there we have to work to get it back off. If you find

any miracle cure, please let me be the first to know...LOL I think we are

all in the same boat... We have to learn somehow to accept it. It is hard

for me when I see someone I know and say hi and they look sooo shocked and

say " I didn't even recognize you " .

Know that we are all here for you and we will get this pred weight deposted

somewhere else besides our bodys. LOL
