Guest guest
My son was dx with global apraxia at 28mths of age. He turned five yesterday and attends the preschool handicap program in town. Since his dx he has made huge progress and has had a ton of therapies. Unfortunately, this past May my little one was dx with autism and I have not had a lot of time for my older one. We kept up with his therapies, but as far as homework and the close eye I once had on him....well for obvious reason I could not keep up. Things are settling down for us...so I am paying closer attention (again). This morning I went in to observe my apraxic son in preschool today. Overall I was pleased with his participation (he could not see me so he was acting no different than usual). The one thing that bothered me was my son couldn't sit still in his chair. Now I know he has a ton of energy here at the house...and can't sit still but I have observed him in school before (last year) and he always sat nice. My guess is back then he was nervous and now he is more relaxed and more himself. He also kept putting his hands in his mouth, I suppose for some sensory input. Again he does that at home, but last year I never saw him do that in school and no one has ever brought it to my attention this year. Next year he attends full day kindergarten....my son is bright and academically I know he can keep up but I am wondering/concerned about the rocking and mouthing. Could he be nervous? Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated. --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make your homepage.
Guest guest
It could be that your son might just do better sitting on a therapy ball. My son couldn't sit still for a second, never mind attend to task but now that he has a ball to sit on at school and at home things are much better now. He has lots of sensory difficulties and one of his ot's explained it to me that some kids need to fidget in order to think. Most of us will remember our teachers or parents telling us " stop fidgeting, do your homework " well intended, but some kids(adults too!) need to fidget to think. hope this helps [ ] re: my school observation today My son was dx with global apraxia at 28mths of age. Guest guest
Please get the GI labs talks about. My not apraxic kid is celiac. She never could sit either and was fidgety and would have grown into an ADD diagnosis when it was a painful GI problem...all that gas needing to come out. She was popping internally from the wrong food. Do not let this go. The labs will tell his story. Get all of them. > > It could be that your son might just do better sitting on a therapy ball. > My son couldn't sit still for a second, never mind attend to task but > now that he has a ball to sit on at school and at home things are > much better now.
