The proof is in the pudding and we know what works for most in this

group over the years and that includes those with autism. Cod liver

oil is healthy -but it's not what " works " for most. There were a

group of children like my son Tanner in this group and if you check

the archives -some are still here but most of their children-like

Tanner-blend today so the parents are on to " normal " things and not

always here. Again this is without all the things people in this

group do today. If it's not in The Late Talker it's because it's not

what was working for the majority just a few years ago.

Liz your child isn't the not the norm and you have some heavy issues

you have to now explore on top of everything. Again this thread

started because a mom that I'm guessing that none of us knows

personally posted that she gave her child cod liver oil and assumes

that her daughter is gaining weight due to that -and at the same time

her daughter has made gains on the oil. Instead of pointing the mom

to the obvious or asking if there were any changes to the child's

schedule or life since fish oil is only linked to weight loss when

needed - there was a jump to a rare metabolic disorder even without a

question of lifestyle.

I'm saying please let's not jump and blame fish oils (and can I add

milk too?) As I pointed out many times -EFAs which are essential -

work with the body. Helps those that need to gain gain and helps

those that need to lose lose weight. Fish oils -unless there are

allergies to the fish oil -are safe and benign and healthy for all.

EFAs are approved for infant formula and one capsule of ProEFA is

about the same dosage that is in infant formula! Parents don't get

blood analysis prior to giving their child formula or a tuna fish

sandwich! Many neuroMDs tell patients over the phone to start taking

them now when apraxia is suspected if there is a wait to see them.

For the overwhelming majority -there are no reasons to do testing

prior to eating a tuna fish sandwich -or taking a fish oil

supplement. Many of us including me do go through genetic testing

and blood work at some point -but it's not exactly a welcome to the

group for new members place to start. We should start with the

basics. Appropriate diagnosis is always the best start.

This has come up many times prior and of course if one has the extra

disposable time and money to go for all kinds of testing then nobody

here will stop you. But in the general rule of thumb -what should

you do -here's one archive with an opinion from one PhD who is highly

respected for her work including

My son has actually slimmed down (and didn't have a gut to start) in the

last 8 months since re-starting fish oils. I don't claim that the fish oils

made him skinner, I think he's slimmed down because he's 6 and kids tend to

get taller and leaner around this age.

Could there be another issue instead of the fish oils for the original

poster's child's weight gain? Some kids will get a " beer gut " right before

a large growth spurt. My kids always get fuller faces and a little thicker

in the mid-section before growing and then it all disappears as they gain

the height. There may be something else going on.
