Guest guest
I'm not sure I understand but let me see. You don't have to have 3 c. per day--it's recommended not to have over 3 c. per day though. If it's the dairy that constipates you, you could eat some yogurt and take acidolpholus pills. If it's the acidolpholus that constipates you, doubling the starter would have the same effect as the regular yogurt. You may want to reduce the amount until you can eat more yogurt. In the knowledge base at http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info you may find more information or at www.pecanbread.com which is the children/autism site. Not sure if that helps but some moderators will be on tomorrow. Debbie cd houston dx'd 3.02 scd 12.05 with lapses > I use Yogourmet to make my goat milk yogurt. Guest guest
You can get legal acidolpholus pills for SCD at Lucy's Kitchen Shop or Digestive Wellness on-line. I just caught the milk being the problem. I started out with minute amounts of yogurt like 1/8 t. and worked my way up. I probably still couldn't eat 3 c. per day ;-). You're still pretty new to the diet too so it's better to go slow, you'll have better results. Debbie > I'm not sure I understand but let me see. Guest guest
I use Yogourmet to make my goat milk yogurt. I've read somewhere it takes 3cups of yogurt a day to get the best amount of beneficial bacteria. That's the limit per day, that's the best amount. I am not sure anyoneactually eats that much. I can'teat that much as it constipates me. I was wondering if it would be okay todouble the amount of yogurt starter (4 packs, instead of 2) for 2 quarts ofmilk. I reason that 1-1/2 cups of yogurt with a double batch of starter wouldprovide the same amount of beneficial bacteria as 3 cups of yogurt with asingle batch of starter. It doesn't work that linearly, because there is a finite amount of lactose inthe milk to feed the bacteria, and if the bacteria don't get fed, they die. Soyou'll get some more bacteria and a lot of dead microscopic bacteria corpses- heh! You can certainly increase the dose, but I would one and a half it, not doubleit. It should produce an extremely tart yogurt. But I wouldn't eat 11/2 cups if it is leads to bad results like C,since that is counterproductive. Eat, say, a half a cup of yogurt, someacidophilus supplements and some s. boulardii supplements. Mara

Guest guest
Claire I don’t believe doubling the yogurt starter would work for several technical reasons. But you don’t have to consume 3 cups of yogurt per day to get some benefit. Even a tablespoon of yogurt per day will be enough over the long-term. Small amounts work just as effectively as large amounts – perhaps even better as your body won’t build up a sensitivity and you won’t risk an overgrowth. Elaine only mentioned the 3 cup per day as a limit on the amount of yogurt to be consumed (all that milk fat and casein still has to be digested), but any amount under that limit will still be effective. If you are still finding dairy to be constipating then you can use a legal Acidophilus supplement on some days and use a small amount of yogurt on other days. Small amounts of probiotics taken regularly work just as well. You are getting the beneficial bacteria in place, which is the goal. Each of us has to figure out the amount that works best for our bodies. I never increased the yogurt amount beyond ¼ cup per day because after 6 months my body had built up a sensitivity to casein. So now I can’t eat yogurt or cheese. I use a legal L. Acidophilus supplement. My maintenance dose is twice a week. Small amounts regularly work better for my body. Kim M. SCD 6 years  >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I use Yogourmet to make my goat milk yogurt. Guest guest
Hi Claire, I would suggest that you eat yogurt through-out the day. Don't worry too much about amounts of bacteria. Fermented foods are loaded with beneficial bacteria. Once your gut ecology settles and you feel better you can look into ideas as to how to make probiotics more efficiently implant in your gut. Until then, just work with your body and listen to it.. best guide ever.. really!! Jodi > > I use Yogourmet to make my goat milk yogurt. Guest guest
Is it even possible to get an overgrowth, since SCD is always starving out the bacteria in our systems? I always thought it was notoriously difficult to get acidophillus to even implant while on SCD. Guest guest
It is possible to get an overgrowth of Acidophilus just as it is with any other microorganism, according to the medical literature I’ve been browsing in since my own diagnosis and journey back to health. When an overgrowth occurs and with what bacterial or fungal strain depends on the individual, of course. I found several articles that mentioned some patients having an overgrowth of L. Acidophilus that needed treatment (caused similar side effects as an overgrowth of candida.) We have to continuously supplement the beneficial bacteria since there is a natural life cycle of our microorganisms. Of course most of us have a disrupted gut ecology when we start SCD, so it takes a while to rebalance our bacterial and fungal colonies, move the levels back down to normal and stop overwhelming our immune system. Eventually we don’t need to take in as much probiotics; just enough to maintain good levels. I’m currently browsing microbiology texts as I’m updating the candida files for our group. Everything I’ve read so far confirms what I came across in the medical literature 5 and 6 years ago. It is really fascinating to learn how the microorganisms interact and colonize in our bodies. Guest guest
Thanks Sky for the good suggestion. I am going to ask about getting a test for parathyroid next. And I did not realize that acidolphilus could become a problem if too much is ingested. I've been fermenting my yogurt for 30 hours and using 2 packets to 1-1/2 quarts of goat's milk and eating at least 2 cups a day . I will cut back on that now.
