Guest guest
If someone from EI comes and helps your child with speech and he is does well. Do they still label them as Special Ed when it is time for school? Guest guest
, I don't know if you have this available in your city or not, but Parents as Teachers is a national program, it is similar to EI but not just for kids with problems. Every child up to age 3 qualifies. You just contact them and they will come to your home and do evaluations with your child every 3-6 months until age 2 and then again at age 3. It is mainly just like playtime for your child and the teacher just works with them to see if they are meeting all their milestones, they do some testing and let you know if everything is on track or if you need to be getting further assistance, i.e. speech, PT, etc. http://www.parentsasteachers.org to search for a program near you. Guest guest
When turned 3 he no longer was able to be in EI. Then the school system did an evaluation and they felt that no longer needed help. So to answer your question it depends on if your child qualifies through the school system. and (09/22/01) > >Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot >To: <nosurgery4clubfoot > >Subject: question about EI >Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 16:33:03 -0400 > >If someone from EI comes and helps your child with speech and he is does >well. Guest guest
In the school district I teach in, students in speech are not really labeled special education, but they do have a IEP (Individual Education Plan) This ensures they are learning and meeting the goals they need to meet, so basically it is a goals sheet that is modified and evaluated yearly. You may inform the school that your child has been receiving assistance with speech, but in my district we do our own evaluation to see if they will qualify for services and how often the services will be rendered. Many students can later not qualify for speech because of their advancements; however, most students with learning disabilities will always receive some sort of service. I hope this helps a little! question about EI If someone from EI comes and helps your child with speech and he is does well. Do they still label them as Special Ed when it is time for school? Guest guest
I'm a special education teacher and in our state, students that are labeled speech impaired will have speech therapy when they start school if they have not tested out of speech. If you were talking about ending up in the resource room, they will only end up there if there speech is so bad that it impairs their ability to learn. I have about 5 students that are labeled Speech impaired in my classroom. Hope that answers your question and if you have anymore, let me know! Guest guest
Thank you to everyone for the information you have provided me. I have already contacted the parenting advocacy something or other to make an appointment for him to be evaluated. I just wanted to add that I was mostly curious about EI following you to school because sometimes children are unnecessarily labeled as special ed when they are not. Obviously, if Christian needed this to continue I would support any program offered to us that would be in his best interest. Thanks again! Guest guest
I havent read the other replies, so I am sure I am re-stating something ... but here goes EI is for birth to 3 years old. If by 3 years old your child is at peer level and no more intervention is needed then they are released and there is no further impact. If at age 3 your child is still behind they are then turned over to the local school district and further intervention is handled by them. I dont know if there is really a special education label for speech tho. My niece is turning 13 this year and due to severe speech apraxia she still gets speech therapy thru her school (she is in 5th grade this year). While she went to preschool in the public school from 3 to 6, and the teacher was trained in speech pathology, I would not say it was a special ed preschool program because 4 years later my own daughter - who is very gifted in the speech/language department - went to the same class with the same teacher. My step-daughter - who had severe speech delay - also had the same teacher for 2 years before my daughter had her. Anyway, my niece was treated the same as the rest of the students in regard to k-5 schooling ... she was in main-stream classes and elegible for magnet programs ... the only difference was that she went out of class to ST first several times a week and later once a week, similar to the old remedial math and reading programs that public schools used. Speech is not really considered a " special ed " condition as far as I know, unless it is tied to something greater - such as overall retardation, brain dammage, autism, etc. For whatever reason even apraxia/dyspraxia doesnt seem to be in the realm of special ed even tho it usually has a large impact on the ability to read and comprehend both written and spoken language.
