Guest guest
Grace, You know, I found a yahoo group called " NaturalLateTalkers " They are making me feel much better about Christian's lack of vocabulary. Maybe they could help you out too! We are going to the doctor tomorrow about the same exact problem with Christian. I am with you on the smart thing with these kids too. He understands what I say and does what I tell him to. It is so frustrating for both mom and baby. OT - Hearing Test hey all.. well grace had her hearing test done yesterday for her lack of speech issue.. she wouldn't let them do the localized test (test each ear using the ear muff thingys) but she could hear all of the tones and voice coming out of the speakers each time.. they really felt that her lack of speech had nothing to do with hearing... but they said she is extremely behind in speech and were refering her speech therapy... they said she should be saying a bare minimum of 10 words.. but most likely around 12-15 words.. and they only give her credit for one word... " uh-oh " she says that all the time.. " bye-bye " she only said one day and not since then.. so i was a little discouraged because i really just don't want her to have any other problems.. she's just so smart.. and i'm not just saying that because she's mine.. she really is smart.. they had no idea why she wasn't speaking though.. they said that was for the speech department.. so now i have to wait for a referal there.. sigh.. i am having a little bit of a pity me day i guess.. thanks for listening.. they did say that it was a very good thing that it's not her hearing.. so that's a good thing... mommy to Grace 12-03-03 BCF Dobb's Brace 16/

Guest guest
, Do you talk to her all the time? My husband is really good at talking to our kids all the time, he explains everything to them. When Jenna was a baby he used to just take her around the house with him and he would tell her about everything he was doing. She talked very well, very early. Sammy is saying " dad-da " and " hi " now. I do think that every child develops at their own rate but I also think there is something to the thing about talking to them a lot. I wonder if you haven't been talking as much with her the past few months since her dad hasn't been there? > hey all.. well grace had her hearing test done yesterday for her lack > of speech issue.. she wouldn't let them do the localized test (test > each ear using the ear muff thingys) but she could hear all of the > tones and voice coming out of the speakers each time.. they really > felt that her lack of speech had nothing to do with hearing... but > they said she is extremely behind in speech and were refering her > speech therapy... they said she should be saying a bare minimum of 10 > words.. but most likely around 12-15 words.. and they only give her > credit for one word... Guest guest
allison... actually i have started talking to her more since he's not been there.. for lack of some one else to talk to!! lol... i have been really trying to talk to her.. and if she makes sounds repeat them to her or make a word out of the sound she says.. i read that some where.. and just do the letter sounds and say " b-b-ball " and stuff like that.. my mom had to get used to my constant chatter to her when i moved in with her.. she kept thinking i was talking to her and would constantly ask what i was talking about.. she soon came to realize that i was just jabbering.. now she doesn't listen at all.. lol.... just kidding (for the most part).. so i really feel like i am but i will try to do it more.. i do find that during bath time and diaper changes and that, what my family calls " maintenance " work i don't really talk to her that much... so i really need to start there i think... thanks for the suggestion... mommy to Grace 12-03-03 BCF Dobb's Brace 16/7 wrote: , Do you talk to her all the time? Guest guest
, don't get yourself down. So, Grace did'nt want to cooperate with the hearing test, huh? Whose child wants those ear muff things stuck in their ear any way? does not like that done either. In fact when we had it done a couple of weeks ago we had 3 different nurses do it, she would not be still long enough. I had to talk to her and bribe her. You know you have me worried about now. She talks some but mostly baby talk. She says about 7 or 8 words but that is it. When I have taken her to her wellness check ups I've never been told that this was a problem for her. Hmmm... And I talk to her all the time. You know one thing I noticed(don't know if it makes a difference) was with my son i never did the baby talk thing with him and he spoke at 10months. Now with we all do the baby talk thing with her and she only says a couple words. I'll have to ask her ped next time she has a appontment. Don't get discourged I'm sure she is fine.. and smart.. and beautiful. You know all this don't worry. She will be talking in no time you watch. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. By the way has finally lost her fear of falling. I can officially say she is walking now. She walks all over the house and outside! I'm soo happy!! I just wanted her to walk by summertime. If she falls now she just laughs and gets back up. Oh, she can stand up by herself now. It has been such a long journey, her feet have come a long way. I sent Dr.P an email yesterday with pictures of her feet and I'm waiting to hear the results. Can't hardly wait! and BL CF 12/16/03 > hey all.. well grace had her hearing test done yesterday for her lack > of speech issue.. she wouldn't let them do the localized test (test > each ear using the ear muff thingys) but she could hear all of the > tones and voice coming out of the speakers each time.. they really > felt that her lack of speech had nothing to do with hearing... but > they said she is extremely behind in speech and were refering her > speech therapy... they said she should be saying a bare minimum of 10 > words.. but most likely around 12-15 words.. and they only give her > credit for one word... Guest guest
, I'm so happy for you -- and too! Way to go , you're a pro now! I would not get worried about 's vocabulary. A couple things to keep in mind, when babies are learning to do new things (i.e. walking) sometimes they slack off or even seem to forget other skills, then when they have mastered whatever they were working on they go back to what they knew before or start working on something new, such as talking. Also, it is common for kids with an older sibling (or more) to do less talking early on because they have the sibling to do the talking for them. I think a lot of it just depends on their personality, i.e. how frustrated they get if they are unable to communicate effectively w/o words. Two other things I have heard: 1. using simple sign language to communicate actually encourages them to talk and 2. Reading to them, even if it is not books they can understand is a key factor in making kids smarter. Guest guest
michelle you always make me cry for some reason.. i am so glad she is walking and doing so well at it.. that makes play time outside much better... i wouldn't worry about sam's speech either.. she's the same age at grace and they said that 10 words was ok... and she's close to that so hey.. i think that's great... i know that grace will walk and talk soon.. i just get so worried.. chalk it up to first baby... and i try to not worry so much.. and i put this appt off for 3 months because i just wanted to give her one more month.. over and over.. so that's what i have decided to do again.. give her one more month.. lol... i don't really do the baby talk.. mostly because i feel like an idiot.. lol... and she always looked at me like i was one.. so i stopped that long ago... sam sounds like my niece... abby hates falling on her hiney.. and she is the most careful child i have ever seen... then there is grace who crawls by her and pushes her down.. poor abby is a half a foot shorter and 5 pounds lighter than grace.. and abby is only 10 weeks younger.. but my sister is 4' 11 " tall and weighs 98 lbs... so you can see where she gets that from.. grrrrr .. lol... michelle wrote: , don't get yourself down. Can't hardly wait! and BL CF 12/16/03 love, lisa before i made you in the womb, i knew you... love God. ---------------------------------
