Guest guest
is almost 19 months and still not walking independently. Our doctor seemed concerned and thought that by 17 months he should've been walking. Our physical therapist thinks he is delayed due to weak calf muscles from being casted and braced from 10 months to 15 months. Have other children started walking later than 17 months and had nothing else wrong with them but clubfoot? and 11/10/03 bilateral cf dbb 14/

Guest guest
, If you look in the polls section, there's a closed poll that shows when the clubfoot babies started to walk. There were 4 aged 19 mo and older. One is M's son, , and I know there's nothing wrong with him- I watched him run like the wind at the races at the clubfoot symposium last fall! Hope the eases your worries some! > is almost 19 months and still not walking independently. Our > doctor seemed concerned and thought that by 17 months he should've > been walking. Guest guest
, I think you will definately find there are a few late walkers here. Kolby just started walking a few weeks ago and is still trying to master the process. I personally feel his walking was delayed due to weak calf muscles. They were just mushy. We had to start all over with his treatment when he was 9 months old which I think delayed his development a little. There is absolutely nothing else wrong with him besides his clubbed feet. Once he started pulling up and using his calf muscles more, I could tell his muscles were getting stronger and bigger just by feeling them. He came out of his brace full time in January, at 14 months, and started to walk some at 17 mos. I didn't think it would ever happen. They just do things at their pace so if you feel confident that there is nothing else wrong with him, just try to be patient. It will happen...I know exactly how you are feeling. mom of Kolby 11-19-03 bcf Dobb's brace 14/7 Brice 6-22-01 Adam 6-7-88 > is almost 19 months and still not walking independently. Guest guest
, don't get discouraged, you will find many of us who have children that started walking at a late age. my daughter will be 18 months next week and she has only been walking on her own for a few weeks. i know for a fact that she was delayed because of weak muscles. dr.p personally told me not to expect her to walk till at least 18months and if she did'nt by then not to worry. she started his treatment late (at a little over 1 year old) and then went into full time brace so when all was said and done she has been out of casts and full time brace wear for only a couple of months. i know how hard it is to wait b/c it seems like it will never get here but it will. patience is what we need and they will do it when they are ready. im sure he is fine he just needs to build muscle strength in his legs from all the casting and brace wear. take care and let us all know when your " special day " comes!! and BL CF 12/16/03 > is almost 19 months and still not walking independently. Guest guest
My baby started his first steps at 18 month. He stood with help, for the first time when he turned 14 month. I think it may be because he has hyper flexibility and he is relatively week. My good friend's son started to walk the same age (18 month) and he has no orthopedic or other problems. (-: Idit. Guest guest
karen... i agree with you on that.. i know that if grace had been corrected from the start she would have been walking long before this.. she was actually starting to take steps in a 3 week break from casts before she went back in.. that was at 12 months old.. she took 4 steps in a row and was back in casts 3 days later.. talk about almost hysterical with anguish... i was so upset.. but you can ask several here and they will tell you that i have been back and forth between confidence to unease in the last 4 weeks about her walking... seems like i feel differently every other day.. today i have confidence.. and i will try to tomorrow.. that's about all we can do!! my mom frequently (in a loving manner) calls me the shoe nazi because i am so strict with her brace time.. don't ever take them off before 8:00 in the morning.. blah blah.. my sister said that's why she wasn't a mommy to a clubfoot baby because either me or her wouldn't be walking right now.. lol.. that made me feel much better.. mommy to Grace 12-03-03 BCF Dobb's Brace 14/7 --- onemorebb wrote: > , > > Thanks for the encouragement. Guest guest
I wasn't worried at all about walking until the doctor seemed concerned. Then he started talking about a spine x-ray and possibly a neurological exam and I freaked! The physical therapist said if he does have scoliosis it's mild and she doesn't see any indications of neurological problems, so I'm less worried now. Thanks for your support, I really needed it. and 11/10/03 bilateral cf dbb 14/7 > > > , > > > > Thanks for the encouragement. Guest guest
, you made me feel so sad with the post you wrote. I know exactly how you feel. But you know you should'nt have to explain if you don't want to. I sometimes would just say something like " oh she is just taking her time or she's just not ready to let go yet " . I met a lot of people who had kids that were late walkers. I know the feeling when you see a younger child pass by walking and yet your having to carry your child b/c they don't walk yet. But you know I finally thought to myself " has come such a long ways since she was born. She was born with 2 club feet, casted numerous times, had a tenotomy done on both feet, has to wear a brace to sleep everyday till she is about 4 or 5 and yet I expect her to walk in the short while she has been out of casts and her brace 23/7? " Our clubb foot babies endure things I don't think I could endure and yet they do. They amze us with the things they can do with their brace. Sometimes we take the little things for granted b/c we are so anxious for THAT day to come. Like Grace standing on her own for the count of 20. These are the little milestones that WILL ultimetly lead up to her walking on her own. I think your day is coming soon. The day when Grace looks at you with that big smile saying " Mommy, I don't need you to hold my hand anymore. I can do it all on my own. " And you know what ? It's thanks to our love and devotion to our kids that got them there. So give yourself a hug and a pat on the back b/c your doing exactly what your supposed to for Grace! and BL CF 12/16/03 > > > I wasn't worried at all about walking until > > the doctor seemed > > concerned. Guest guest
Like T. Mentioned a while back, Jakob (who is now 7) was a " late " walker. He was a few days shy of 19 months when he took off from us in a store While beautiful to see, I panicked at first sine I had " lost " my baby - LOL. Today, no one even pays any attention to it. With his schoolmates, he has taken a couple 3 miles hikes for a community service project (cleaning up a park near their school) and is still running strong at the end of the day. Just to relate how much of a non issue his clubfeet have become, let me tell you what happened after his las checkup with Dr. Weinstein. Since his appointment was at 8:30, he obviously missed the beginning of the school day. After we dropped him off at school, he was talking to his teacher during recess. He tells his teacher that " the doctor said my feet are just excellent. " The teacher asked if his feet had been bothering him and he told her no, but didn't explain further. We were talking with the teacher later that same evening at the PTO meeting and she told me this. I then explained that he'd been born with bilateral clubfeet that had been treated at UIHC. She told me she'd have never guessed that just looking at him. He keeps up with the other kids and plays just as hard as they do. Once these kids get the hang of walking, you'd never guess they'd have ever been " delayed " . Guest guest
