Guest guest
Hi Sue, What kinds of food have you been eating when you are able to eat? I had my surgery on 6/25 and was only really nauseous through the first week post-op. The one thing I *haven't* done that I know I am supposed to is adhere to a completely soft diet. I was quite nauseous the first 3 days after I got out of the hospital. I kept forcing my self to eat small quantities of high protein foods; rotisserie chicken (very little skin), salmon, scrambled eggs. The nausea got less and finally was unnoticeable (except one time when I definitely over-indulged on my mom's meatloaf and scalloped potatoes). I eat almost anything I want but I have just been really careful to chew all meats very thoroughly and I have been fairly careful to keep the fats to a minimum until I know what they do to my system. I have also stayed away from too many carbs (mostly because I simply don't have room for them) except for bread on the occasional grilled cheese sandwich. What I do notice is a very long lasting sense of fullness from eating all this protein. I find I have to force myself to eat the next meal before I am even hungry or I know I won't get in enough protein that day (I don't want to have more than 1 protein shake a day (35g) because I don't like them all that much). I also try to drink at least 8-12oz of water or milk between meals to get enough liquids in. Do you think you could be mis-interpreting your new stomach sensations (full or empty)? Well, I do hear you in that gagging is gagging so it's probably pretty hard to misinterpret... Try eating protein-rich foods exclusevely for the next few days and see if it helps. Or maybe try eliminating one food/drink at a time for several days each to see if you have become extra sensitive to something. Definitely try to *not* let your stomach get too empty as that can tend to make nausea feel worse. As far as the morning nausea, try eating a protein rich snack right before you go to bed, or even take a few bites of a slim-jim if you wake up in the middle of the night (chew it really well). Also, consider that maybe it's being caused by an acid thing? See if Tums or Pepcid help at all. I wish you all the best, Sue. I hope you find a solution soon. It really does get better!
