Guest guest
Okay, I should have posted this about 3 weeks ago when Ava got her new bar, but it's been crazy. Anyhoo, Ava got a bigger bar (10 " ) from the doc, and I HATE IT!!! Her old bar screwed into the bottom of her shoes, with just big flat screw heads on the bottom of the shoe, no big deal. Her new bar clamps onto the sides of the shoes, and screws tight with wing nuts. THIS IS IDIOTIC!!! If I saw my daughter playing with something like this I would take it away! It's dangerous! The ends of the wing nuts hurt like heck & scratch, and the other end of the screw is sharp sharp sharp!! I have scratches all over my legs to prove it--not to mention my NEW WOOD FLOORS!! Is this the new style? Or is this the old style? What is the deal? Compounding everything, she's very active now, so when she wakes up & starts crawling around, it only takes about 15 minutes for her to loosen up the wing nuts and slip one shoe out of the clamp. As a result, she's pretty much only been wearing the shoes at night time, and she should be getting at least 16 hours a day! But there's NO WAY for me to keep these on her during the day when she's moving around! WHAT DO I DO???!?!??!? , mommy of: Guinevere, on & Ava 8/4/04 RCF ABS FAB 16/7 (in a dream world!) Guest guest
That's an old design that can't be used well with the new style shoes because the lip is not large enough to hold the shoes in place. Not only that, a mom mentioned just last week even that those clamps *destroyed* a pair of their shoes by ripping the soles from the leather. I wouldn't have it if it were me. Especially if I'd paid for shoes with real money. You should absolutely tell them no way and get a decent bar. Do you still have the old sole plates from the last pair you had? If so, they're all the same size and you can just use those on your new bar. I cringed when I read about your hardwood floors... OMG! Hope to hear some good news from you soon about this. I'd drive me nuts too! Kori At 07:25 AM 6/13/2005, you wrote: >Okay, I should have posted this about 3 weeks ago when Ava got her new >bar, but it's been crazy. Guest guest
That style is OLD OLD OLD...although having said that, they are still available for sale! You should insist on getting the adjustable bar, either the gold (although the ends stick out and they hurt like heck too if you can't get them covered with some pipe foam) or the red adjustable bar with footplates that screw onto the bottoms of the shoe. We just got a new bar on Friday. The red adjustable bar that we had finally bit dust - the screws in the foot plates (that adjust the rotation) seized and snapped on the inside. I was unaware of what the problem was but for the past couple of months, the shoes have been wobbly on the bar. I finally got in to see the orthotist to see if he could figure out the problem and when he finally got it apart (it was seized really well!), he found that the screws had snapped. Anyway, the only bars that they have in stock are the gold adjustable bars. I don't think I like it as much as the red adjustable bar just because I haven't been able to figure out how to fit the padding over the big bulky knobs...I'll keep working at it and figure it out somehow! Guest guest
When we went to our orthotist to get our very first bar (the red adjustable one), the orthotist wanted to get us that one because she thought it would be easier on us with putting the shoes on and then clamping them onto the bar....when she called Markell to order them along with the boots, the Markell rep told her right then (over the phone) that the clamping hardware on that particular bar was not advisable with the boots because of the lip. I'm glad that she called them rather than going ahead and faxing the order without speaking to someone! I ended up getting the other red bar that affixes onto the sole plates. Guest guest
We have the exact same situation!! Nate hasn't figure out how to loosen them, but we had a major issue with the screws sticking out the side. When Nate threw his legs over his head, the screw was coming very close to his eyes. I was so stressed out!! Luckily enough, my dh has a dremel tool. He actually buffed the screw down within the soul of the shoe. Not fun!!! > Okay, I should have posted this about 3 weeks ago when Ava got her new > bar, but it's been crazy. Anyhoo, Ava got a bigger bar (10 " ) from the > doc, and I HATE IT!!! Guest guest
, If you can't get them to replace the bar, I've got Jonah's outgrown, 10 " , gold, non-adjustable bar that you are welcome to. You'll need to have the sole plates as well, but those just screw onto the bottom of the shoe (and are, so far as I know, one size fits all). Let me know. Guest guest
Well, I can't complain *too* much, I suppose. This is actually the first bar we've gotten from our doctor, her first having been a donation from another mom on the board here. And the shoes were covered 100% by our ins., even though we only have a 50% DME coverage. And when we needed the bar, the doc said " go get me a 10 " bar " , and put it on our shoes and said " bye " . Again, I don't ask questions, I just go with it! I know the bars aren't very expensive, but still! But then when I looked at it--AACK! I can see what Kori was saying about it ripping the soles right off the shoes! It's already made big indents in them. It just doesn't sit right--I figured it was an old style. Anyway, sorry this took so long--it's been another adventurous week here--party for 50 for my parent's 30th anniversary, and in the afternoon before it my son dropped a BIG rock on my daughter's finger...she goes for x-rays tomorrow because it may be broken...and on and on and on...I'm sure all can relate to the crazy life of a mommy! But Naomi, thanks for your offer, and if it's still good I just may take it. This stupid bar scares me to death! Plus with her wiggling out of it she's only been averaging about 12 hours/day, instead of the 16 she should be getting. I console myself with the fact that she's **this*** close to walking--even her " crawl " is more a " walk with arm support " . But I'd like to get her closer to the 16 mark. I'll send you a private EM I guess.
