Guest guest
First I would like to thank all of you for your timely reponses to my questions. I rented a recliner placed it in front of the air conditioner and my quality of life has improved 100%. I am feeling much better. I can feeling the healing starting. I have a few additional questions. 1. I wake up about 4 hours into night with a sharp pain in the back. I feel like I have to inhale rather quickly. When I inhale I feel as though I am inflating the painful area. This also happens a few times during the day. After about 15 minutes the pain lessens but doesn't go away. Is this normal? 2. The Doc's assistant told me that when the tape started falling off I could remove it and shower. I a now 10 days post op and the tape does not seem to be falling off. How long should I wait? Or should I ask ? 3. I am not even coming close to 75 grams of protein daily. I just don't have the room to get in that much food. I would have to eat all day to get in that much protein. I am using supplements to try to increase my average. Is this normal? 4. I have had a cough since surgery that appears to be clearing up now. I read a post about coughing causing hernia's. Is it true that coughing can cause a hernia or can it cause a staple to come loose?

Guest guest
glad you got that recliner. i bet you are much more comfortable now. #1- maybe you need to put a support pillow under your back. it may be getting spaz muscles from laying too long in one position. and when you take a quick breath in, you are stretching your stomach wall alittle bit and it's still sore from being cut on. that sounds normal to me. #2-the steri-strips are still hanging on? stubborn suckers. when i had c-sections and a big ole vertical scar on my belly, i could take a shower after about 4-5 days. just don't soak yourself for a long time. take a quick shower, then gently pat dry the incisions with a soft towel. #3-75 g protein/day is what you will be eating a little farther out maybe. if you are only a few weeks out, just get in what you can, every hour or two eat some more. it's gonna take a long time to eat any volume of food for now. later it will get better. but check in with your doc just to be sure, ok? don't wanna get too low on protein levels and have to go back to the hospital. just ask joe frost. #4-coughing without holding a pillow over your tummy could possibly cause a hernia, if it is a really strong cough, or sneeze. coughing is good for clearing your lungs after all that anesthesia. you need to do it. but get your pillow and hold it firmly over your incisions first! always, if in doubt, call your doc's support staff and ask your questions. or email them if that is easier. hugs, mary y st.louis itchin to be switchin > First I would like to thank all of you for your timely reponses to my > questions. Is this normal? answered all your questions quite well. A few more inputs for you: All kinds of pains happen during the first several weeks. The back pains most likely result from your positioning on the operating table for a long time. LOWER back could be a kidney stone, but most likely not. If it doesn't go away in a few days, check with your doc. > >2. The Doc's assistant told me that when the tape started falling off >I could remove it and shower. Cut yourself some slack for the first several weeks. Don't overdo it. I obsessed on protein, too, but it is really not necessary for the first several weeks. Just do your best. Concentrate on getting fluids into yourself. At least a quart/day, more if possible; 2 quarts/day are best. > >4. I have had a cough since surgery that appears to be clearing up >now. Many of us come home from the hospital with an upper respiratory infection, including cough. also, the NG tube makes your throat raspy. So, yes, it is normal. I sucked on butterscotch hard candy to soothe my throat as well as my sweet tooth. >I read a post about coughing causing hernia's. Is it true that >coughing can cause a hernia or can it cause a staple to come loose? Maybe terribly persistent coughing, but retching is more likely to cause those problems. But, as said, hole a small pillow tightly over your incision area when you cough. Good luck, Steve --
