I am wondering if anyone could share their daily menu and the amounts

with me or point me in the direction to find one?

I am 7 weeks out and cant seem to get in even half the protein I need.

My doctor DOES NOT want me to use shakes or bars. But I dont see how I

can get 75 grams of protein in through food.>>>>

Carol L: I was getting in 75 gms/protein in the first week post-op. BUT, I

could eat quite a bit and didn't experience nausea/stomach problems and

didn't have any lactose/dairy intolerance. I did rely on protein shakes/bars

to get my protein in during the first three weeks because I wasn't able to

eat meats, etc. Now, I get most of my protein thru food (80 gms/day). It

is mainly derived from dairy, meats and fish. But, I'll have a protein shake

or bar every now and then to boost my protein levels. I find that I can get

60 gms in without problem, it's the extra 20 gms that take more effort ---

either in high protein snacks or a supplement.

I'm not sure why your surgeon doesn't want you taking supplements, unless

his/her goal is to have you eating properly/nutritiously and not relying on

the shakes as a 'crutch' to get the majority of protein in and then eating

the majority of foods that are NOT protein rich during the day? Even at five

months out, I have a protein shake/bar every now and then. However, it has

NEVER been my main source of protein or nutrition. Maybe that's what the

surgeon was worried about?

Here are some sample menus of what I ate:

post-op day 9:

9 am: 1/2 pure protein blueberry cheesecake bar 15 gm

Post-op Day 81 (one of those weird, off days where I just ate cereal LOL):

12:00: Thai beef yam nua salad 25 gms

1:00: bowl rice chex cereal with milk and sucra 4-5 gms

8:30: bagel with 7-9 pcs genoa salami 9 gms+13 gms

12:30-1:00: Thai chicken w/ broccoli, veggies, rice and 20-25 gms

cabbage soup

5:30: 1/2 chicken parmesean on french brfead 20 gms

1:30: chicken, broccoli, veggies 20-25 gms

6:00: 3-4 pcs chicken breast deli w/ 2 pcs 7-grain toast 15 gms

Peanut snack 7 gms

9:30: yankee pot roast: beef with carrots, beans and 25 gms

potatoes

Total: 82 gms protein (no supplements)

Post-op Day 96:

11:30: 2 eggs, kaiser roll, and 4-6 slices bacon 12 gm, 8 gm, 8gm

peanuts, peanuts 7 gms+7gms

italian ice

6:30: roast pork with fries and green beans 20 gms

8:00: popcorn 6 gms

total: 70 gms (without supplements)

I tend to go in phases --- I ate cheese omlettes for breakfast for a couple

of weeks, now I like to have some deli meat on a roll for breakfast... I went

through a real peanut phase and seem to be continuing a popcorn phase.... LOL

Some excellent sources of protein:

cottage cheese (usually 12 gms/4 oz)

yogurt (6-8 gms per serving but watch out for high sugar yogurts)

cheese!

deli meats --- Nice for a little snack -- just wrap some meat in cheese; with

or without bread

peanuts/soy nuts

tuna

fish/seafood

chicken/beef/pork

soy products

beans --- Frozen bean and cheese burritos punch 10 gms/protein in one

burrito! :)

I'm on a burrito kick now LOL

I'm sure there are many other sources... Really, at least two of your meals

should include a major protein source (usually meat or beans/soy) -- like one

chicken breast-sized portion, in order to make the protein requirements.

Breakfast can be loaded with protein to get a head start on the day --- Many

people eat eggs, bacon and such. I don't always eat a high protein breakfast

but when I do -- it certainly makes the rest of the day easier as to what I

eat. :)

Hope this helps a little. If the problem is with amount of food (ie. - you

can't seem to get anything down due to stomach size, etc.), then try

frequent, smaller meals spaced throughout the day. If it's what you're

eating (ie - content), then it may require some re-thinking about what foods

are palatable.. maybe you are drawn to carbs, etc. and just haven't really

had a protein-rich diet before. I know this was the case with me and I went

on a protein-rich plan before the surgery to make sure I could do it. I

found out how much I really enjoyed it and got some practice in and that made

me feel more comfortable post-operatively.

I still enjoy carbs -- I just ensure that the protein content is there and

eaten first. I try to combine protein and carbs like: meat or cheese-filled

tortellini, au gratin potatoes with diced ham and peas, etc.

All the best,

Hey ,

how long did your plateau last? and suddenly did you lose four or five? I'm

only three months out. Do you know if plateaus happen around the same time

for everyone?

I was bragging about my nails the other day being so strong due to all the

protein and how I wasn't going to worry about my hair - that night it started

falling out. I think I've heard it mentioned that about three months is

around the time that happens, right?

Thanks for the help.

Lela B: You are ALWAYS most welcome! I just hope it helped. Like I

said, I ate (and still do eat) a LOT of dairy products and some people

do have problems processing them post-op (maybe due to true lactose

intolerance or just are irritated by something in the dairy for awhile

post-op).

I did start out with Lactaid skim milk --- Thinking that thsi would

kind of 'ease me' into things... I don't know if it was effective or

not. Now, I drink all kinds of milk. I was just worried initially

that the lactose may bother my stomach. :) So, I always had Lactaid

milk with my shakes, etc.

There's a really neat soy protein drink out there that I love: Mocha

Silk (and Chai Silk). It has like 8 gms/serving (I think) and tastes

delicious. I also drank quite a bit of soy milk immediately post-op

to stay hydrated and kind of 'sneak' the protein in! LOL

> Joann in Mobile: Yes, my plateaus can last 2 weeks or so -- and

then all of the sudden I will lose REALLY rapidly -- anywheres from

5-8 lbs. It's not like I 'steadily' lose 2 lbs every week. I had my

first plateau at four weeks post-op. It lasted two weeks.. and I've

had a few since then. I seem to have been (hopefully have been) on a

nasty long plateau recently (right after losing quite a bit of weight

- at least 8 lbs)... Now that I'm down 2 lbs again I'm hoping this

means my system is ready to give in and I'll be losing some more soon!

:):)

Yeah - the hair usually falls out at 3-4 months post-op and I've heard

it can last until 9 months out. I just try not to brush it, etc. and

wear it in a ponytail most of the time. It's thinning out but so far,

so good....

LOL<<

They have Chai Silk? I have just recently forsaken my beloved milk for the

Silk products--mainly the vanilla. I actually mix it with Oregon

Not-so-Sweet Chai and I love it! But if there is a Chai flavored Silk I am

all for it! I haven't really missed the real milk yet, which is a suprise

since I was raised on honest to goodness from the cow milk, but in

anticipation of my surgery I decided to go ahead and switch so it couldn't

be a problem...

in FL: Hi! The tea egg is a DELICIOUS hardboiled egg made by the

CHinese. It uses hong cha (black tea), star anise and some other stuff (I

actually had a recipe once when I was in Taiwan but LOST IT! AGH). The eggs

are seeped for quite a long time (at least 12 hours) and the tea permeates

the egg to the yolk. THey had them in every 7-11 in Taiwan by the counter in

those electronic crocks...

If you have a Chinatown nearby, ask for 'cha yeh dan' (tea leaf eggs). I've

found three places that sell them (so far) in NYC: ONe lady on the street in

Flushing, Queens and in the teahouses (St. Alps and Ten Ren) in Manhattan and

Brooklyn. :)

They are DELICIOUS!!!!!! I actually just finished having 1 1/2 of them this

evening! LOL Talk about synchronicty....

The Oregon Chai is delicious as well, but I like to just have it 'ready

made'. I didn't drink much coffee right after surgery - just didn't want it.

So, I found that the Chai and Mocha Silk were a good substitute. NOw, I

have an occasional coffee but the silk stuff does it for me, too....
