Thinking about taking Gabe to have his feet checked... He's not due to see

Ponseti for another 6 months, but it's been 5 months since he's seen him. I'm

kind of paraniod to let his feet go nearly 11 months without a check up. I'm

thinking about driving to see either Buzz Showalter in Idaho or Hatch in

Colorado, has anyone been to either of these docs? Gabe has atypical feet, so

I'd hate to waste my time driving then have to argue about treatment.... Any

suggestions?I know there is a ponseti-using doc at the Salt Lake Shriner's, but

I haven't heard anything from anyone who's actually used him, nor is he on

Ponseti's list.

Faith,

We see Dr. Showalter in Boise. We like him. We initially started Tenny's

treatment with a local ortho, who did his best but did more damage than help.

He referred us to Dr. Showalter when Tenny was 5 months- which is where we

discovered Ponseti method. He has always been good to answer questions and

listen to my concerns. He assistant, Leilani, is wonderful. I have her phone

number if you would like it. She is good to answer messages and talk to the

doctor. It wouldn't hurt to give her a call and ask some questions.

Tenny doesn't have atypical feet so I don't know specifics on his experience. I

do know that he is the only doc in the Boise area that will treat club feet.

All other docs refer to him. I have been there several times when he has

residents with him and he explains to them in depth what he is doing to the

foot.

He doesn't deal with the specifics of the brace- we go to

the orthotist for that (we have Markell shoes). I know he is aware of the

brace, but I don't know much beyond that.

A few things that impressed me about Dr. Showalter..... I have seen too many

doctors that assume you know nothing, and you argue to get them to even admit

something is wrong, and then you are right. When Dr. Showalter reduced Tenny's

hours he said straight down to 12. I said no. He said why? I told him. He

said do it your way, I would just like to see that kid on his feet as much as

possible. I said sounds good to me. Also, he has never ever complained when

I have to drag other kids with me. (not every doc likes it when mom drags in

the other rugrats) he has always been very good with the other kids.

On a lighter note, the first time I saw him he asked me if there was a family

history of club feet. I said no. He said, well this is your first so you

wouldn't have other children with the problem. I said this is number five. He

said you don't look old enough to have five. Good answer, you are now my

friend. Not that that has anything to do with club foot treatment and the

quality of it. Just made my day.

Here I babble on. Let me know if you want Leilani's number, she could probably

answer a few of your questions.
