Hi! Please be assured that the casting and bracing doesn't cause

delays for the majority of the kids! My daughter went into the brace

full time at 5 months old and she learned to sit, pull to a stand, and

cruise in her brace- and she was walking by her first birthday. There

are some interesting polls in the polls section (like when did your cf

baby start to walk) if you're interested.

Here's the link to the post with the information about the bracing

protocol from Dr. Ponseti:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/message/30939

FYI- there is a ton of information on this group's website under the

Files section (look under the bracing folder) and the Links section

too.

I hope this helps!

The Markell shoes actually come in a 0000 size. If you think you've got a fit

problem, take them back. Part of the orthotist's job is to make sure your

daughter has shoes that fit her feet! You can also request the Markells that

have a hole cut out in the back so that you can see whether you've got the heels

all the way back and down like they are supposed to be. Check out the Markell

site for more information:

The tip to make a line where her toes are supposed to be is a failrly good one.

It can be misleading though. Are her toes slipping behind that line (which

would indicate that her foot is slipping up in the shoe) or are they slipping in

front of the line (which might just be her socks loosening up as she wears

them)? Is she slipping all the way out of the shoes? In any case, you need to

make sure that when you put the shoes on, you are getting the heel all the way

in the back of the shoe and all the way down. Then get that strap nice and

tight. If the foot is in the shoe correctly, you can't really get the strap too

tight. As long as you are getting them back on, relapse shouldn't be a worry.

I know they can be a real pain at the orthotics department there... we've had

several go-arounds with them. The last time, Dr Lerman wound up telling them to

just give us what we wanted (and then the orthotist threw a fit about that).

But they have also been terrific about overnighting us new shoes up here so that

we don't have to make the trip just for that. They're not trying to be mean or

anything...

Let me know if you have any other questions. Are things going well with the

FAB/DBB aside from the slipping?

Hi All-

My daugher has now been in the DBB for almost two weeks. She

is two months old and she is wearing the Markell shoes. She has the

smallest shoes -which I believe are 000. I think her feet are still

so small that I have to readjust them often ( I marked where her toes

should be when in the shoes!) Have any of you out there had this

problem with your child? Any advice as to how to keep her feet in

them securely--I put on her shoes on so tight...

She started the process very young and avoided the tenetomy, however,

if she is slipping out, will this cause her to relapse? We don't see

the Dr. until next week. We are receiving treatment at Shriners so

these are the shoes she is wearing--are the or Dobbs better?

Just curious. But that means we have to pay out of pocket!

Hi Naomi-

Thanks for replying about my concern with the DBB. I do think I have a fitting

problem with the Markells. 's left foot-which I believe is the most

stubborn of the two--is the one which slips back behind the line most often. I

am having to readjust often, so I am going to see if the orthotics dept. will

give me a smaller size--and thanks for the tip for the open heel--I will request

them for sure.

When I did receive the shoes, I felt so rushed. Our appt was in the afternoon

and Shriners was the busiest I have ever seen it and Dr. Lerman was swamped.

Finally, at the end of the day, we got our shoes and the orthotist didn't really

spend that much time with us because he said Dr. Lerman needed to see us ASAP

(this was close to 5--when everyone is going home). In any case, most of the

knowledge came from you and Kori and the FAB information you wrote up! Without

it, I would not have been able to put on the shoes and bar correctly... so thank

you very much. Other than that, seems to be getting used to her new

toy!

Hope all is well with you and the family....
