Question about newer Markells strap

The new Markells that Sammy got today are the newer style (the ones

that came out in '03, not the brand new ones with the hole in the

back) -- his old ones were the old style. Anyway, I thought that the

strap was supposed to be longer on these? The strap on our old ones

was pretty darn long, I never had to worry about it slipping back in

the shoe. These seem incredibly short! Even if I punch a hole at the

very end to buckle it in while putting it on, it seems it will be too

short, what's up with this??

Livie got a " new " ('03) pair of Markells in May of 2004 that also had those

short little straps and boy were they annoying!!! I posted about it here and

Jay Markell replied to me. He said that he was unaware of any changes in the

design that would have resulted in a shorter strap, but that he would pass the

info onto the factory people. On that same pair, the strap on her clubfoot side

eventually broke right in half. I'm assuming that it was from us having to yank

on it so much. It broke after only about 5 months in the shoes.

We got another new pair in November and the strap was plenty long enough on

those ones and is still going strong showing no signs of breaking.

Maybe you got a pair from that " bad " batch from awhile back? We just struggled

with them and eventually they stretched out, but then they broke. Our local

shoe repair shop was able to attach a new strap for us and they were fine after

that. It only cost us $7.00 to have the new strap attached. If they are giving

you enough of a problem maybe you could look into having longer straps attached?

Good Luck! Hopefully your next pair will have those long straps again!

I've been complaining very loudly about this since we got our second pair

of these (first pair was a prototype in June 03 and it had the longer

straps). Yes, they're too short. Way too short. Which is why you want to

put the hole in the tip to secure it when you put the shoes on. That's the

only solution I've found and after a while you do get used to it. Once the

foot is in you can cinch it up tight, just don't put the hole too close to

the end so you can grab it lol. It seems too short after having those nice

long straps to work with however it is doable. But yes, I'd like to see

the longer straps back on these shoes someday so we don't have to do

that. They are IMPOSSIBLE to get on without that extra hole secured for

me. bummer huh?

Darbi has received at least 3 new pairs of Markells, ordered from the

factory specially for her each time and they all have had this shorter

strap. When I'm talking about the longer strap, I'm talking about the one

that is about 5 " long after it's buckled. Those were NICE to work

with! Seem too long but when you're trying to get those little feet in

them correctly, being able to grasp the strap with your whole hand sure has

it's beneifits over trying to do it with your fingertips. Each range of

shoes has a certain size strap. So all the shoes from size 0000 through

say, size 2 have one size strap. The next range has a longer strap, and so

on. They end up being about the same as far as I can tell which is

always... too short to work with effectively IMO.

Interesting Kori. These straps are definitely of the way longer variety. I

don't have to worry about them at all while putting them on her. I open up the

laces and and get her foot down in there and I have plenty of strap left to grab

ahold of.

Maybe it is more a function of the size difference in her shoes? She went from

a 5N with the short little straps to a 7N with the nice long straps.

huh... well that is encouraging to say the least. Perhaps the design

finally got changed and just got some from old stock?

That long strap was so nice when she was little, I really missed it when

she got her second pair. We won't be getting any more Markells I'm pretty

sure, so I hope to hear all the new little ones are getting these long

straps too.

Thanks for letting me know, like I said that is encouraging news!

Yeah, these are definitely old stock, they even still have tons in

stock that are the OLD style. When we were getting fitted and I was

seeing these issues I was actually hoping they weren't going to have

the right size in stock so we would have to order them, but they did

have his size, darn! I'm willing to deal with it, but if it becomes

too much of a pain in the butt I will get it resolved somehow, either

have the strap replaced or get them to give me a new pair. I'll wait

and see.

y'all wanna see some REALLY OLD shoes?? On a whim a few days ago, I

searched ebay for Markell and came up with a bunch of 1644's without the

strap! Why this person is selling all those, is beyond me other than they

have no idea they're not appropriate. I don't have the link right now,

gotta run, but if you search ebay for Markell you'll find them. There's

about 8 pairs for sale real cheap. I seriously hope no one buys them

thinking they're going to save some $. ugh!

's first pair were these. NO strap and the box itself looked like it

was from the 70's, very faded. I didn't know any difference at the time.

Also, the bar was silver and also looked like it was from the 70's. When

I showed them to our first doc, he said, 'they are all about the same'.

Because they were 000, I think they are the cutest ever and I plan to

bronze them.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who thinks they're kind of cute. Actually a

lot like the stride rite first walkers, minus the toe, lol. My other kiddos wore

stride rites, but of course started off with soft sold shoes, but their shoes

were similar to these when they started walking (stride rites are pretty

flexible, but the style is similar).
