Guest guest
- NATIONAL It's official - Prozac is the new weapon in the battle against the bulge The antidepressant Prozac may have another role: helping obese people to lose weight when diet and exercise fail. Evidence for its usefulness in weight loss, even in people who are not depressed, is included in a new edition of Therapeutic Guidelines, in which Australian doctors assess world scientific literature to make recommendations about treatments. " We're not looking to suddenly have every fat person on [an antidepressant], " said the chairman of the writing group for the guidelines on hormone regulation, Associate Professor Moulds. Professor Moulds, of the University of Melbourne, said the drug promoted weight loss only at relatively high doses, which might cause other side effects. But doctors could consider it for people who were " morbidly obese " . He said it was a possible alternative to orlistat (Xenical), a drug that stops people absorbing fat from their food. The head of the metabolic disorders clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Associate Professor Joe Proietto, said there was evidence that the class of drugs to which Prozac belongs, the SSRIs, suppressed appetite as they improved mood. The chair of a National Health and Medical Research Council working party on overweight and obesity, Dr O'Callaghan, confirmed the group was examining the weight loss potential of antidepressants as part of its preparation of government-endorsed guide lines to be released later this year. Guest guest
Hi Judie, prozac does not work for all I have taken it 7yrs and when I started I weighed 145 lbs and have gained weight up to 420 lbs I did not gain because of prozac I am addicted to food I wish it was my wonder drug.It works great for my depression though without it I am suicidal.I wanted to know what do you do about food addiction after surgery? I am doing pre-op testing and want to know what to expect afterwards I know it is life changing and I will have to learn how to eat, but my mom says just eat as much as you would with the surgery and then I would'nt have to have it. I tried it, it only lasted for a while and I start eatting again . I don't have a scale but I will say in the 3 weeks I've been taking it, all my clothes are looser and a pair of jeans I no longer fit into could be worn, although still tight, I can now zip them up and wear them, something I wasnt able to do 3 weeks ago. I'm not sure what the stuff is...but it's weird...I just don't think of food, feel hungry...its better than the phen phen.. I don't know if I'd want to take it long term but I like that I'm able to drop some weight before my surgery in a week because it can only help!! ~~* AJ *~~ BMI 59 Surgery date 7/24/01 going self pay - Dr Baltasar Spain Check out the Bellingham Support for WLS WWW.lookin2bthin.homestead.com

I did worry as a preop that my compulsion to overeat would cause me to " ruin " the surgery. Not a chance! It is hard to explain, but that compulsion to eat just seems to be gone. I still enjoy eating. But the compulsion to eat, even when full or just not hungry, doesn't seem to be a problem. I feel like the surgery fixed my head as well as my tummy! Guest guest
My problem with a drug I dont know much about is the side effects down the road like with phen-fen and the heart problems. My reason for posting the prozac article was that the surgery is by far much better long term than the drugs. Withdraw the drugs and the weight comes back PLUS it doesnt work for everyone. Exactly...I'm not sure I'd want to take this stuff forever....who knows what it would do ~~* AJ *~~ BMI 59 Surgery date 7/24/01 going self pay - Dr Baltasar Spain Check out the Bellingham Support for WLS WWW.lookin2bthin.homestead.com

Guest guest
Your doc is right on top of the latest treatment, AJ. I love my dr...LOL I started out on 25 mg at bed time for 7 days...then 50mg at night for 7 days...then 25mg in themorning and 50mg at night for 7 days until I got to 50 mg in the morning and 50mg at night....I've not had any problems...other than a stomach ache and a bit of sleepiness...but after the first week it was gone. Dr. Banjanin is very fat friendly and very compassionate...very pro surgery and very compassionate to us that struggle with our weight. I love that he looks me in the eye...touchs me and treats me like a person should be treated. Guest guest
Remember, often depressed people eat more. Not all, some eat less. But most of us probably eat more and do less when depressed. As depression abates we often are more physically active and eat less. Despite that I see a lot of folks with a significant weight gain on Prozac and the other SSRIs. I'd take this with more than a grain of salt. Prozac is notorious for causing weight gain in a significant percentage of patients when taken at the usual doses. Please note this referred to taking it a high doses which cause increased side effects. Most mental health prescribers struggle with helping our folks on Prozac and the other SSRIs to deal with weight gain. The good news is that most post op DS folks continue to lose weight on SSRIs. But weight gain is one of the most common side effects. Now sure if worse than the sexual side effects or not. What I like on the leading professional psychopharmacology list is that each time a person posts they must add information about which drug companies have lined their pockets. Guest guest
We (the prescribers in our clinic) also prescribe low doses of Topamax/topiramate for folks on meds that often cause weight gain. Most often we use it for mood instability and PTSD. It seems to work well for "rapid cyclers". However it can have some unpleasant side effects that don't resolve in a week or so. And there are some folks who seem to have increased depression with it. However it is only FDA approved as an anti seizure medication.
