Guest guest
Hi everyone! I think I can safely boast that is finally walking! THANK YOU JESUS FOR DR. PONSETI!!!! He is not quite standing up in the middle of the room yet, but as of yesterday, he has tried twice to stand up in the middle of the room! He will push off of stuff and walk clear across the room, even turning corners. he does it completely of his own accord now!!!!!!!! For those who don't know our story, short of the long, was born with very severe atypical bilateral clubfoot, he was casted from birth, to no avail and at 6 months had first surgery done, based on advice of doctor who said he was using the ponseti method, but was doing it inaccurately. The surgery made things terribly worse with all the scar tissue, so after driving to Iowa and having Ponseti do it himself, he spent 3 more months in casts, changed every 5 days, had another surgery to correct the first one, two more months in casts, shoes 23 hours a day faithfully, still relapsed, spent another two months in casts physical therapy 4 times a week for the past 8 or so months ...now finally at 21 months JASON IS WALKING!!!!!!!!!! He's still pretty unsteady, and I know he's going to need more casting but the fact that he is pulling himself up by the couch and then walking clear across the room, navigating himself around toys, and trying twice to stand up in the middle of the room with nothing to hold onto is HUGE!!!!!!!! I know we are not done by any stretch, but it is all just one step at a time. For those moms and dads out there who are struggling, please don't give up!!! Keep those shoes on, keep stretching, and if the doctor says the ponseti method is not working we need to do surgery, RUN RUN RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN TO IOWA!!!!! I cannot stress that enough. Get an Angel flight out there and do whatever it takes, but if the doc says the ponseti method isn't working, then he iis not doing it correctly and you need to go to the master. SURGERY WILL NOT MAKE IT BETTER, IT WILL MAKE THINGS WORSE!!!! It is not a quick fix and will put your child back even further. We still have issues with scar tissue and the scars along his feet are so tight. I know his feet are not completely corrected yet, and in 4 years he may have problems with stiff feet as a result of the surgeries. If Dr. Ponseti says you need it, then there is no doubt that surgery is necessary, but consult with him first before subjecting your child to months of struggling and possibly years of agony simply for a quick fix. Surgery is NOT an option!!!!!!! I knew the minute we made an appointment with Dr. Dobbs he would start walking...figures!!!!!! I am not complaining!!!!!!!! Thank you Lord and Thank you Dr. Ponseti!!! yyyyyyaaaaaaahhhhhhoooooooo!!!!!!! o.k. off my soapbox, but please, please keep on fighting the good fight!!! Don't ever give up for a minute, and don't ever ever contemplate surgery unless you have consulted with Dr. ponseti. Thank you everyone for your support, prayers, and laughs!!!!! Lord bless each and everyone of you! Guest guest
Darby, Just be patient! It won't happen overnight, but hopefully Livi won't take as long either! It took 5 months from getting his relapse casts off for him to walk! Just keep those shoes on!!!! By the way I don't think I ever said congrats on ! How fabulous!! (I'm not on very much either!) Guest guest
Thanks ! I hope anyone who reads it will avoid the surgery route too! Then everything we've been through and will continue to go through will have been worth it. The frustrating thing is that the first surgery was a tendon lengthening surgery. It was something the doctor said would be non intrusive and very simple procedure that he had great success with. One thing parents who are scared and struggling and think surgery will be the answer to all their problems need to understand is ANY SURGERY IS INTRUSIVE!!!! No matter what the doctor says, any surgery leads to scars and scar tissue that will make things even tighter. The recovery time alone will set your child back even further. Just because your childs feet aren't responding to the ponseti method does not mean there is no hope for walking without surgery. It simply means either the doctor is not doing the ponseti method correctly, he or she have tweaked it enough to be ineffective for some feet or your child doesn't have typical clubfoot and requires someone with more experience. If a doctor suggests surgery, you have nothing to lose when you get a second opinion. Email Dr. Ponseti, he always responds or send him pictures. Have your doctor do it. but get that second opinion, please. Learn from our mistake!!!! Once you have the surgery, you cannot go back. Man, it makes me cry just thinking about it. How I wish I could just reach these moms and dads who think the only option is surgery. It is irreversible. With casting, you can regain what was lost, yes it will take longer, but you will get it back if the casting is done correctly. Surgery? Whats done is done. No going back. Please please please, if anyone wants to send my email address on or wants to hear more of 's story, I would love to chat. I can't stress that enough. I don't want anyone to ever go through what we have gone through and what we will continue to go through because I made a bad decision for my son. alright, once again, I'm on my soapbox! I guess I will be forever on it! LOL 16 hours mitchells faithfully, 21 months 10-09-03 2 full days of walking!!!!!!!!! God is good, all the time!! > , > That is such wonderful news!!!!!!! Guest guest
Hi , Congratulations you must be so excited!!!! I have a question about the surgery Dr. Ponseti did to correct the previous surgery, what type was it, and what did it involove? What was he actually correcting during the surgery. Dr. Herzeberg (Ponseti method doctor in Baltimore, land) has suggested surgery for my son Collin (he'll be 4 in August), it is actually 2 surgeries, 1 to put on an external fixator device, another to take it off, etc. I trust Dr. Herzenberg, but I still haven't scheduled the surgery I guess hoping that something will change. I'm so afraid if I go with the surgeries that it may be just a temporary fix and we could be in the same position again in a few years. Collin did have surgery at 8 weeks old, we didn't start the ponseti method till about age 2.5. Collin walks/runs/jumps, etc everything fine and complains of no pain what so ever, so I'm leary about surgery, but at the same time, I know the surgery could help him later in life when pain often sets in from what I heard, its hard to make a decision now when he seems fine and content that could affect him as an adult..... Sorry for the rant!!!! Michele Yoder Collin's story at http://www.geocities.com/chele323232

Guest guest
Hi Michele, First, thanks! I am literally bouncing off the walls, and then collapsing with crying. yeah, hormonal wreck! Second, don't you dare apologize for having the desire to do everything within your power to help your child!!! It's a huge wake up call when you realize that some mistakes you can't bounce back from and fix. Every decision you make affects him for the rest of his life. YIKES! I have a couple of questions first, has your doctor sent pictures to Dr. Ponseti? He is always so willing to consult with other doctors and review pictures and xrays and other docs, if yours hasn't done that, I strongly suggest doing it. You are always free to call Dr. Ponseti himself too. He even answers the phone!! Amazing man. Please don't take offense at this, it's not meant for that, but I trusted my first doctors too! That's why we went with the surgery, I trusted him. Also what is the problem if he walks runs and jumps with no pain? Why does the doc think he needs this surgery? Is collin in any kind of physical therapy? You are definitely at the right spot and always always be leary. Before agreeing to any surgery, please please contact Dr. Ponseti himself. I know that there are many good doctors out there, but after everything we've been through I just don't trust anyone else like I trust the master himself. The first surgery we had done was a tendon lengthening one. They went in and made three small incisions along the tendons to lengthen them and that was it. But the scar tissue and the scars made his feet afterwards unresponsive to the Ponseti method by Dr. Ponseti. I don't know for sure if the surgery by Dr. P would still have been necessary or not, but the end result was a lot of scar tissue. The surgery that Dr. Ponseti did was a partial release much like the first, but he also did a capsulectomy (sp) He also went in and helped the original incisions loosen and got rid of some of the scar tissue. I think that's all he did, but it was just a whirlwind and I was with the master. I didn't question him. The problem is every time you have surgery scar tissue forms. It's a vicicious cycle, but it did help loosen them to a point. The best advice I can offer is send your info to Dr. Ponseti and get a second opinion. In fact your doctor should be urging you to do that before saying hey, lets cut this kid open! Please please please call Dr. Ponseti and just share with him your story. The angel flights are awesome and so is the Ronnie house. If Dr. P says you need surgery, then yeah, you probably do, but make sure you exhaust every avenue first. I remember Dr. P talking to me about the fixator thingy, and who knows, we may have to go that route down the road. But please, I strongly urge you to cover your bases and just talk to him. Have him call your doctor and consult with him. It certainly can't hurt. I sure hope this helped. Please keep emailing if you have any other questions! Guest guest
Congratulations and ! I know just how you feel. My 19 month-old started walking two weeks ago and hasn't stopped. It has been a long time coming. I feel so fortunate to have found this group just 4 DAYS before would've had major surgery on his feet. Everyone here told me not to do it and find a Ponseti doctor. We had to wait a month for an appointment at Shriner's in Springfield, MA, and was 10 months old by then, but it was so worth the wait. My husband finally met our Ponseti doctor three weeks ago and almost cried when he shook his hand. Our previous non-Ponseti doctor tried his best to correct 's feet, but wasn't using the Ponseti method. and 11/10/03 bilateral cf dbb 14/7 > Hi everyone! > > I think I can safely boast that is finally walking! Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for responding. I actually have called Dr. Ponseti and spoke with him, alls he said was Dr. Herzenberg is one of the best, etc. and if Dr. H thinks he needs surgery then he does, and that was it....I was flabergasted!!!! I don't know who else to ask, I asked 2 of the best... Dr. Ponseti was quick and to the point about it, and as soon as he heard Dr. Herzenberg's name he said your child is in good hands, etc. Michele

Guest guest
Same thing for us. Dr. H wantsto do a capsule release. I emailed Ponseti and he said he would go with Herzenbergs recomendation. He did say he thought that surgery should wait till was a little bit older because sometimes with pt it may not be needed. Atypical just takes longer. Something to that affect anyway. I have noticed a lot of improvement with his feet just making sure he's in his shoes longer. -------------- Original message -------------- Hi , Thanks for responding.
