Guest guest
Same thing for us. Dr. H wantsto do a capsule release. I emailed Ponseti and he said he would go with Herzenbergs recomendation. He did say he thought that surgery should wait till was a little bit older because sometimes with pt it may not be needed. Atypical just takes longer. Something to that affect anyway. I have noticed a lot of improvement with his feet just making sure he's in his shoes longer. -------------- Original message -------------- Hi , Thanks for responding. I actually have called Dr. Ponseti and spoke with him, alls he said was Dr. Herzenberg is one of the best, etc. and if Dr. H thinks he needs surgery then he does, and that was it....I was flabergasted!!!! I don't know who else to ask, I asked 2 of the best... Dr. Ponseti was quick and to the point about it, and as soon as he heard Dr. Herzenberg's name he said your child is in good hands, etc. Michele

Guest guest
It's funny...I know everyone loves their own kids, thinks they're beautiful, etc...and some people are constantly TELLING you how great their own kids are. I try very hard not to be one of those obnoxious people (!). But I find it very difficult when it comes to Ava. I don't think anyone but parents who have been through the same/similar experiences can completely understand the feelings you get when your little CF baby is crawling/walking/cruising/climbing out of the crib. It's all I can do not to scream " LOOK AT HER GO!!!! " everytime she's zipping down the hallway on her hands and feet like a little monkey...I was at the mall yesterday with her, and put her down to try on a jacket. Of course, she promptly took off and another lady standing nearby said " Oh, she's going to be walking soon mommy! Any day now! " With people like that I have to restrain myself from going " YEAH! And please, let me give you a 30 minute description of what she's BEEN THROUGH to get to this point! Let me show you the extra skin on her ankle, and the bands on her calf, and the little scar from her surgery! Then you'll REALLY be proud of her! " And really, Ava's " treatment " has been smooth...you mommys & daddys who've had a tougher road must be even worse than me! :-) Anyway, that's my deep thought for the day...like I said, wrong time of the month for me!!! hehehe , mommy of: Guinevere, on & Ava 8/4/04 RCF ABS FAB 16/7 > > > Hi everyone! > > > > > > I think I can safely boast that is finally walking! Guest guest
, that is wonderful!!! Wold wrote:Hi everyone! I think I can safely boast that is finally walking! THANK YOU JESUS FOR DR. PONSETI!!!! He is not quite standing up in the middle of the room yet, but as of yesterday, he has tried twice to stand up in the middle of the room! He will push off of stuff and walk clear across the room, even turning corners. he does it completely of his own accord now!!!!!!!! For those who don't know our story, short of the long, was born with very severe atypical bilateral clubfoot, he was casted from birth, to no avail and at 6 months had first surgery done, based on advice of doctor who said he was using the ponseti method, but was doing it inaccurately. The surgery made things terribly worse with all the scar tissue, so after driving to Iowa and having Ponseti do it himself, he spent 3 more months in casts, changed every 5 days, had another surgery to correct the first one, two more months in casts, shoes 23 hours a day faithfully, still relapsed, spent another two months in casts physical therapy 4 times a week for the past 8 or so months ...now finally at 21 months JASON IS WALKING!!!!!!!!!! He's still pretty unsteady, and I know he's going to need more casting but the fact that he is pulling himself up by the couch and then walking clear across the room, navigating himself around toys, and trying twice to stand up in the middle of the room with nothing to hold onto is HUGE!!!!!!!! I know we are not done by any stretch, but it is all just one step at a time. For those moms and dads out there who are struggling, please don't give up!!! Keep those shoes on, keep stretching, and if the doctor says the ponseti method is not working we need to do surgery, RUN RUN RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN TO IOWA!!!!! I cannot stress that enough. Get an Angel flight out there and do whatever it takes, but if the doc says the ponseti method isn't working, then he iis not doing it correctly and you need to go to the master. SURGERY WILL NOT MAKE IT BETTER, IT WILL MAKE THINGS WORSE!!!! It is not a quick fix and will put your child back even further. We still have issues with scar tissue and the scars along his feet are so tight. I know his feet are not completely corrected yet, and in 4 years he may have problems with stiff feet as a result of the surgeries. If Dr. Ponseti says you need it, then there is no doubt that surgery is necessary, but consult with him first before subjecting your child to months of struggling and possibly years of agony simply for a quick fix. Surgery is NOT an option!!!!!!! I knew the minute we made an appointment with Dr. Dobbs he would start walking...figures!!!!!! I am not complaining!!!!!!!! Thank you Lord and Thank you Dr. Ponseti!!! yyyyyyaaaaaaahhhhhhoooooooo!!!!!!! o.k. off my soapbox, but please, please keep on fighting the good fight!!! Don't ever give up for a minute, and don't ever ever contemplate surgery unless you have consulted with Dr. ponseti. Thank you everyone for your support, prayers, and laughs!!!!! Lord bless each and everyone of you! Guest guest
Thanks ! It's a long road. I just wish I had been thinking more clearly and gone for a second opinion before trusting my doctor who was only doing what he thought was best, but was still wrong. But the past is the past and hopefully because of what we've been through, more parents and hopefully their doctors will realize how hard surgery is on kids and always get a second opinion. In most cases it can be avoided. Not all, but most. How my heart goes out to those who are not in the " most cases " catagory!! Keep fighting the good fight! Guest guest
, I KEEP MEANING... to reply to this thread and 's tremendous breakthrough with the walking... I'm very sorry that I haven't (I'm sure you know what I do post about sometimes overtakes me and then the hubby or the kids need something and I forget to post... but not forget about and you and feel bad you're the only one I haven't responded to!). I have however followed your journey here and was soooo happy to hear this good news from you. I know how much it means to you for him to catch up with the rest of the babes here but know he will... at his own pace and when it happens it'll be that much more of an event to cherish for you. With this little one... I'm sure you're well aware that his milestones are MILEstones and worth every second of glee to see him use his feet so well. Simply wonderful news that he's making such great progress despite his rocky start. I want to say to you though, PLEASE don't beat yourself up about his first treatment. I don't know a single person who hasn't been reassured by their doc about something and despite their gut feeling has come away thinking it's all good because the doc says so. I love Dr's... but they all have this way of sounding so authoritative and sure about something that it leaves the patient (or patient's parent) feeling like there simply can't be any other way to do it and should you ask otherwise... you're stepping on toes and being a PITA. We feel so *small* and insignificant with docs sometimes. At least, that's the way I feel a lot. Like today... I took my son in to the Ped because he dropped a light saber on his toe on Saturday and it was all swollen up with a white pocket at the base of the nail... he's going to loose the nail obviously... but it really looked BAD and infected! So I spent the $20 co-pay on a day that I can't see our Ped (he only sees patients on Wed mornings - he's some bigwig staffer/instructor there and has closed his practice but still sees my kids) and get told that it's probably ok and they're not going to do anything about it. I wanted them to release the pressure but my little frequent hospital flyer (middle child) insisted it didn't hurt (LIE!! - he just didn't want to have a procedure done on him again. Can't say that I blame him but still...) and they sent us away with no treatment for his poor toe. Yes, they consulted a surgeon who just happened to be there, and I'm sure if our Ped was there they'd have done the same thing. OK - I get that. I left not happy, but feeling like it was probably for the best and there must be a good reason they did it like that. Well, they (the boys) get home and get into the pool this evening and Merek somehow busts the toe open and it starts to bleed. So we blotted it up with a paper towel and allowed as much to come out with gentle pressure as would come out. It WAS sore... " don't tell me, my little man that it isn't!! " (this is the same child who impaled himself in the throat with a stick a couple of months back if you remember...) It was obviously not 100% blood (pink rather than red) and when it stopped weeping fluid it's smaller and wow... hurts less! And here I am thinking, if they'd drained it earlier today he would have felt better hours ago. Not exactly the same thing, but they sure do get me those docs... each and every time I'm all fuddled up with what to say and how to say it... Never remember to ask all the questions I need to and I feel like I'm a putz for even worrying about whatever it is. I can't wait till tomorrow... my oldest son has gained some weight the past couple of years and I don't like it. But he's right within the curve for weight and doc has put me off testing him for insulin issues (which run in our family) this whole time. But he looks fat! Poor little guy has manboobitis and is just thick! I really feel bad for him, he's always worrying about what he eats and he doesn't eat much of anything as compared to my middle child who is still in skinny mode. So I am going to take my son to the doc tomorrow and demand he do a fasting insulin on him tomorrow morning. I am going to have to be strong... I bet the doc (who I love, love, love) will tell me again it's not a big deal and he's *within the curve* but I'm sick of seeing my son not eat and still be heavier than the other kids. If he's got an insulin problem, I want it dealt with now. I've come to find that my insulin issues (PCOS) is what my mom had her whole life totally undiagnosed till she finally became frank Diabetic. If we'd known what it was it'd have been obvious that's what I have when I was a teenager. And I can pass this to my male children as well as females so this is a huge issue for me to nip in the bud early if at all possible. I don't eat, yet am still considered *obese* if I weigh more than 150 pounds. And it ticks the heck out of me. I don't want him to have to live this life if I can possibly help it. If I come to find out he does have insulin issues, these past two years that it's been nagging at me must not be something I will look back on and think I did something wrong even when I know I KNEW what it was all this time. They told me he was fine. They reassured me he was fine. Hopefully he is but if he isn't, then we only look forward and treat it however we can. Course then again if he's got some weird terminal disease I could have treated him for two years ago and he'd have lived I may be singing a different song... But my point is that you did what you could with what you had at the time and that's the best you could do. It would be a totally different story if you had come here and were told the doc was screwing up and ignored the advice to seek a second opinion... then you get to feel guilty if you're so inclined. But you're a smart woman and a great mama and you stepped up and made changes when you found out about them and the best ones you could at that. Kudos to you for being that kind of mother for your son. You're a good mama and don't you ever forget it! Whatever happens, will always know that you did your best and got him the best care possible when you could. OK, just wanted to take the time to post to you first tonight. Sorry it ran on all about us. I always do that, ugh... Now ... start running and never stop! Mama's gonna have to chase you!!! hugs, Kori At 10:40 PM 7/5/2005, you wrote: >Thanks ! It's a long road. Guest guest
Thanks Kori! I really am at peace with it now. Now, the first time after the surgery that we packed up and went to see Dr. Ponseti and he said, " I have no idea if we can help him after having that surgery? " and he sent us back home to work on stretching it? yeah, I felt horrible and sick to my stomach. But you know, we prayed about it and went forward. No I don't believe the surgery was the answer and I don't believe we should have done it, I KNOW we shouldn't have done it, but we did, and I am confident that God will work this out for 's good. Oops, sorry, should have started this out with God's in here. But that's it, I'm done. LOL It's been a long road and is an amazing kid that's come through it (as one mom in therapy said) " glowing " ! He's been through the fire, and yes I wish I could turn it back and change that and have listened more closely, but he's making it. Even if we have to go back in casts....Oh God have mercy!....he will get through this. He is just amazing! Hang in there and keep fighting those doctors. Like I said earlier, they love that! LOL I'll be praying for you! 10-09-03 Hi everyone! > > > > > > > > I think I can safely boast that is finally walking! THANK YOU > > > > JESUS FOR DR. > > > > PONSETI!!!! > > > > PONSETI!!!!
