Guest guest
I saw my PCP on Wed. afternoon and he was very concerned about my recurrent UTI's. I'm being treated now for my 9th one this year. I've had so many different bacteria's show up in my cultures, but my UA's are always clear. This time it's Klebsiella Pneumonia, but I've had everything from E-coli to Staph. I approached him about trying IVIG again since I do have a hypogammaglobuanemia Dx from an immunologist. My PCP said that IGG wouldn't help me because the majority of my UTI's are gram neg. with the exception of the staph. Is that true? I didn't know that IGG only helps with gram pos. infections. I'm being referred to an ID doc now. What would they be able to do? Insight appreciated. Thanks!

Guest guest
Dawn- Conflicting opinions has me now seeing an ID doc. My PCP doesn't think it's my immune system. My urologist does. Whose right? We let Dr. Cohen know about the infections, etc and what is being done locally but he doesn't make much comment. I saw an excellent immunologist in Cleveland and he is willing to converse with my PCP but my PCP doesn't think it's an immune issue. I'm hoping the ID doc. will be good and maybe he will speak with my immuno.

Guest guest
Anne, My immunolgist if one of 10 in the country that treat Primary Immune Deficiencies. He is excellent. I believe he would reccomend the IGG because he is the one that Dx'd with an immune prob. (low IGG) and started me on the IVIG. The prob. is that it has to be done thru a physcian here and my PCP doesn't want to look into the immune aspect because of what I said previously about gram neg. bacteria. I don't want to step on toes too much because I really love my PCP and he does ALOT to help me and is very agreeable on most things to do as I ask. So I'm going for the ID appt and am in hopes he will have some wisdom and/or will consult with my immuno doc. about going back on IVIG. Thanks for your insight. I'll see what I can find about the bacteria's.

Guest guest
, Why are you seeing an ID (is that infectious disease?)? I would think that an immuno doc would be able to help here. they have tried the one antibiotic a day and it has not helped? What does Cohen say? Didn't you see an immuno doc in Cleveland? Guest guest
I have the opposite problem to you... my UA's are ALWAYS out of whack (protien, nitrates, WBC's, RBC's, bacteria, PH is out of whack, you name it, its in there) but I have only once in my life had a positive culture.... I dont know what to say about the infections... seems like youve got them good and confused? I hope SOMEONE can help you out though! UTI's are rotten nevermind monthly ones! (when my symptoms flare up, I have all the symptoms of a massive UTI, including visible blood in the urine, and extreme discomfort, but never a positive culture... although the only thing that clears them up is antibiotics... so they are thinking its caused by a bacteria they are not picking up with the cultures...) > Dawn- > > Conflicting opinions has me now seeing an ID doc. Guest guest
, I would definitely recommend seeing a " true " immunologist. Many immunologists are allergist/immunologist and specialize really in the allergy part. I'm on subq gammaglobulin for my primary immune deficiency and it has helped me tremendously. I really wouldn't trust what any other type of doc (except an immunologist who specializes in immunology) has to say about gammaglobulin b/c, just like w/ mito, you get the slightly informed but generally ignorant answers. My understanding is the gammaglobulin is made from the antibodies of many many different people and thus should give you wide coverage for a lot of bacterial and some viral illnesses. You might want to check out the Immune Deficiency Foundation web-site and see if you can find that out about the type of bacterias. In my years of dealing with my PID and the gammaglobulin, I've never heard that it only deals with either gram neg or gram pos bacteria.... Guest guest
The ID doctor will not probally do much more than any other doctor. They are just much more knowlegeble about different types of viruses and infections. An ID would be much more likely to pick up on any really rare type of infection, and have the best way of treating it. Grace's liver reports were often referred to ID, before the mito diagnosis. If you go to CCF for this, Dr. MC Henry is my sisters father in law! He is part time now,and phasing into retirement so it is probally unlikely you would see him.
