Guest guest
Hi Everyone! It's been a little while since i've visited the group page and read the messages. I was just wondering if someone could tell me the Ponseti protocol for when to stop using the DBB. My son is 21 months old, BL, casted at 3 days old. He's been in the DBB since he was 5 months old, and he's been on 12 hrs/day for a long time. We just had a visit with the ortho. He said that his feet were doing very well and that we could stop making him wear the shoes when he turned two. He only has to wear them at night now, but i've been putting them on for his 3 hour naps just in case he doesn't sleep 12 full hours at night. My husband and i have been very lucky b/c he never gives us any trouble with them. I was just under the impression that they were supposed to keep wearing the shoes until they were 3 or 4. If someone could let me know, i would really appreciate it. Thank you very much. Callie

Guest guest
Hi Callie, Great news about you so's foot! That's the way it should be! We got the same thing from our doc, except he was going to release her at 19mo's. uhhuhhh... no way. I told him I wanted her to wear them till she was at least 3 and of course, when 3 comes I'll decide if I want her to wear them longer. That's a year off for us, so till then we are happy knowing she'll stay corrected. There is data that says never before 2-1/2yo, and now that has been changed to 3- 3-1/2yo minimum. There's a growth spurt at 2 I think, which has been blamed for many relapses in those who were released at 2yo which is why they said 2-1/2 minimum before. But with the new information even that is too early it seems. If he's doing so well now, why take the chance? I am positive that it's going to be much easier and better for our family (and daughter of course) if we just stick with it for another year or so vs releasing her and waiting for a relapse... and then having to re-start this whole thing again. One more year... already done two... what's one more year for peace of mind? HTH - and hey, that his feet are perfect is a testament to you and your doc! See it through, tell the doc about Dr. Ponseti's new age recommendations and why... and hopefully he won't tell another mom the same thing. Kori At 01:04 PM 6/30/2005, you wrote: >Hi Everyone! Guest guest
So glad to hear things have been going well with his feet! will be 4 on August 12th and that is when he is being released. I can't believe it's almost time! They have edged that release date up closer to the 4 year mark. There were quite a few relapses occuring in the 2 and 3 range. Pam and (8-12-01) > Hi Everyone! Guest guest
Callie, Back in January, Stella shared a portion of an email that she got from Dr. Ponseti with regard to the bracing protocol. Here is what he said: " After 3 months of full time brace wear, we usually gradually wean the babies out of the brace, starting with 4 hours a day out for one month, then 8 hours a day out. We try to have the babies wear the brace at night and naptime for a total of 16-18 hours and once they are walking wear it at least 14 hours. We used to recommend bracing continue to age 3, but since we have seen some relapses, we now recommend 3 1/2 to 4 years of age. I.V. Ponseti, M.D. " Our local orthopaedic had also suggested to me that Owen could stop wearing the brace at around two years. I told him that since the brace was part of Owen's regular routine and that he didn't fight it, that I would much rather take a conservative approach and continue with the brace until age 4 (or beyond). I agree with Kori - I would much rather just continue on the track that we are on now rather than stop using it and then have to reintroduce it at a later date if Owen's foot were to show signs of relapse. It would be too difficult to get him back into the routine of wearing it again if he were given a taste of 'freedom', so to speak. Hope this helps, Daiga and Owen, 02/04/03 Unilateral LCF, FAB 14/7 (nights & naps) > Hi Everyone! It's been a little while since i've visited the group > page and read the messages.
