Dear Amy,

I am so sorry to hear that you have had some complications. I hope

and pray you will feel better very soon. If the antibiotics are

really hurting your tummy, have you thought about asking your surgeon

to switch you to another type? As far as eating, I found soups

really went down well. You can take whatever soup strikes your fancy

and puree it. I did very well sipping on some lentil soup and

's Bean and Bacon soup. Both of these are also high in

protein and lentils have alot of iron too. How about a scrambled egg

with a bit a cheese melted into it? It's hit or miss but I think

food is really secondary (but not really in your case since you need

to have something in your tummy before taking the antibiotics).

Also, chicken broth went down well for me. Staying hydrated is more

important. I also found sparkling water easy to take. I just let it

go almost flat before I drank it with a wedge of lemon, orange or

lime. I also really tolerated V-8 juice (never liked it pre-op) and

watered down lemonade. Just keep sipping.

How is your daughter managing throughout all this? I remember that

you were concerned about her since you were breastfeeding. How has

that worked out? You can now be a valuable resource to other nursing

moms going for this surgery. Feel better soon.

Hugs,

Jane-

The soup thing scares me just because I am afraid anything with beans

or lentils will give me gas. After my post-op trapped-gas

experience, well, I am terrified of going throught that again!

As for the antibiotics, it did cross my mind to ask for ther ones,

but I am guessing that these are the best for my situation and I am

even more concerned about my infection coming back than what the

antibiotics are doing to me. I think they key is to really get my

stomach full before I take the antibiotics. I've been doing so today

and feel much better. Still, might be a fluke.

Breastfeeding went great until my complications arose. I was nursing

again on the second day post-op with Dr. Rabkin's blessing. They

just made sure they gave me antibiotics that were compatible with

breastfeeding, much like what you would get with a c-section.

Unfortunately, with the complications I am required to take much

stronger antibiotics and so have temporarily stopped breastfeeding.

My daughter is doing okay but still occasionally asks for it. Since

she is only 16 months old, I plan to try and go back to nursing when

I am off the antibiotics as I would like to nurse her until she is 2

years old. This will depend on if she continues to show an interest

and also if my milk holds out. I have still been able to express

milk in the shower although I am not pumping or anything.

Wow, V-8 juice sounds really good to me right now! I'll have to try

some!

Thanks for the suggestions!
