It took awhile before I could eat meat happily. Beef and especially ground

beef were pretty tough for awhile, but are now going down much better, and

chicken still fills me up after one or two bites, and I am 14 weeks out.

Over the last two weeks or so I have been able to eat hot dogs (yum!), and

even sausage.

My #1 protein food from early on was eggs, but I know a lot of people can't

handle them. String cheese and other various cheeses were an early

favorite. Have you tried beans? They are a good protein source and worked

okay for me. What about soups that are good sources of protein, i.e. split

pea, bean, etc. Crab salad made with imitation crabmeat worked for awhile

too. I'm still not fond of tuna or egg salad (although I liked them just

fine as a preop!).

I don't know if this is true for everyone, but I handle protein foods only

one small bite at a time. They really fill me up faster than other foods,

and if I overdo I am a very unhappy camper. I would say to give it a week

and try again, but proceed with caution - one bite at a time. (By that I

mean take a bite and give it a few minutes before having another bite).

Maybe I'm a wuss, but with the " big " protein items like meats, I go very

cautiously. Spending part of our memorial day barbeque riding out waves of

nausea taught me a lesson I won't soon forget....all for one bite of

hamburger!

Hi ,

I will be 5 weeks out tomorrow and I have had nausea off and on. My

Dr put me on compazine to alleviate the nausea but still I sometimes

vomit after I've eaten just a bit. Other times I can eat much more,

even heavier foods like burritos or tacos with no consequences

whatsoever.

The pattern I'm starting to see is that when I haven't been religious

about getting in enough liquid, the nausea comes. I usually drink a

6oz cup of water several times per day and per night, but that alone

is not enough. I need to really push the fluids - close to a 2 liter

bottle every 24 hrs. This is very hard to do and still get in enough

protein.

There are times when I literally run from the table to the bathroom

because I cannot force myself to swallow another bite without

everything coming right back up. And it's not because I'm full

either, nor is it what I'm eating - it has happened with things I

have tolerated very well before. But is around those times I

notice my urine is very dark; hence the dehydration theory.

And I have heard nausea can be an early sign of serious dehydration.

So the flip side is that when I've been pushing the liquids I have

not experienced the nausea at all. I don't have as much room for

the protein foods, but at least I'm not vomitting and I don't feel

like crap!

Just a thought! Good luck!
