Guest guest
Hi Kim From what I have read and experienced toe curling does happen. Our son had/has a right club foot and little toe curled under. His little curly toe required the tendon to be lengthened and it became straight. He still tends to 'bunch' up his toes on his right foot (CF). From what I believe the muscles etc in the clubfoot are often tighter/shorter and sometime require a release. But they can also grow out of it when the start walking and using their feet more. She still has great dorsiflexion & her foot is still quite overcorrected. Is this something to be concerned about? Her older sister Tessa (who doesn't have clubfeet) always curled her toes tightly. I'm just curious because Lily only seems to do it on her clubfoot. Thanks! Kim Lily, 3/28/2005, lcf, P/M FAB 23/7 Tessa, 7/17/2002
Guest guest
Hi Kim- It is totally normal for their toes to curl and does not require surgery. It can take up to 2 1/2 - 3 years to straighten out and causes no harm in the meantime. I used to freak out over my son curling his toes because they were curled so tight it look like feet with no toes. My Ponseti doc kept reassuring me that they would eventually straighten out. It was a long process but now at the age of 3 1/2 they are straight toesies. Some doctors recommend lengthening them at age 2 but it is completely unnessasary. > I've noticed that when Lily is out of the > FAB she curls the four little toes on her > clubfoot much of the time (while she relaxes the > toes on her nonclubfoot much of the time). > She still has great dorsiflexion & her foot > is still quite overcorrected. Guest guest
Hi Kim, My son's feet tuck under his foot sometimes and his toes also go off to the opposite direction of his big toe. (Not helped by 2 of them being plastered under). Regarding the latter, we were told it is common and to just leave the shoes on for another couple of hours a day for 2 to 3 weeks. Easier said than done, though I have extended wear time albeit to a lesser extent than advised, this does fix this problem. As for the first problem, I have noticed sometimes it is worse than others and so have assumed the same approach to the cure ie more boot time. Sorry to be vague but I haven't focused on checking this as we have other issues but I believe it does improve things and I hope this helps. 's other main problem is that his toe nails go in all directions and his big toe bone actually curls upwards - would like to know if other talipes children have this problem. mum to bilateral talipes 10 Dec 03 > I've noticed that when Lily is out of the > FAB she curls the four little toes on her > clubfoot much of the time (while she relaxes the > toes on her nonclubfoot much of the time). > She still has great dorsiflexion & her foot > is still quite overcorrected. Guest guest
Hi, , Lily's already wearing the FAB 23/7, so there's isn't much room for increasing the hours. But from what other folks have said, I'm hopeful that her toes will " unfurl " on their own. Thanks for sharing your experience!
