Guest guest
Dear masonsmomma It's great to hear that Mason's foot is responding well to his treatment. It must have been traumatic for you to notice his foot without any kind of warning and having your partner in Iraq. It's a lot to deal with especially with all those hormones going crazy. At least this group/site is comforting to let you know you're not alone. Unlike Mason, our son hated and protested with his DBB. While awake and with it on, he was fine. But come night time it was another story. Our surgeon is happy with Billy's foot and he was able to stop wearing the brace at 12 months. (some of you are probably gasping in shock) He had his check up last week and everything is still going well. His achilles tendon is a bit tight and we need to ensure we stretch it throughout the day as well exercise, such as walking. It's great to know there are normal-ish feet at the end to make it all worth while. Sharon Charlie 28/12/02 Billy 20/4/04 RCF - treated! masonsmomma04 wrote: Hi! My son Mason was born on May 14, 2004. As soon as he was taken away from me to be put under the heating lamp, I noticed his foot. I kept asking " what's wrong " and all the nurses kept saying " nothing, nothing " . The next morning, the pediatrician on duty said that the foot would eventually correct itself and I thought that was odd...it was very misshaped. The next day, a different pediatrician said that we needed to make an appointment with a podiatrist and that it definatly was not club foot but that it would be corrected with casts. Of course the podiatrist said " it's club foot " and I wept. I was very hormonal and my husband was in Iraq. It was such a hard thing to hear and it was even harder to see my 4 day old baby in casts. Mason continued to have casts on both feet for 5 months. At 5 & 1/2 months, we were flown to DC just to meet with an pediatric orthopedic surgeon. He decided he wanted to release the tendion the next morning. Another total shock. Mason's foot looked amazing after the cast came off! He finally had a heel! But being a military family stationed in Germany, we have had some huge bumps in the road gettting the DBB. Mason's final cast came off in the first week of November, he is finally wearing the DBB now. He is actually wearing a german version of it since the military doctors kept making us cruddy braces to go into shoes into the bar. It was a mess. He is taking to the bar very well and slept through the night on the very first night (and every night since). He was cruising before, and he just learned to pull himself up and walk sideways today. His foot is looking amazing after 1 week...makes me so excited to see how it will look in 2 months. Sorry this is a novel! It is so nice to hear from other parents who are going through the same thing I am!

Guest guest
, Welcome! Somehow I missed your story until now. Wow, your doctor actually said, " I don't know, we don't treat this that often, " and couldn't even tell you it was clubfoot? How comforting is that to hear, " uh, I don't know " ........well your a doctor for crying out loud!!!!!!!!!! Man, you poor thing. Hats off to you to do the research yourself and find Dr. Ponseti, especially this early on. Your son will be in great hands and have perfect feet in no time! Good luck with the trip. Guest guest
, It's also sad that the doctors you saw at Kaiser didn't refer you to Dr. Colburn (a Kaiser physician) who is the most experienced Ponseti method doctor in California. Kudos to you for trusting your mommy instincts and researching on the Internet. You should be proud that you didn't just listen to those doctors and you found a better way for your son. I, too, didn't find out about Dr. P in Iowa until my daughter was 3.5 months old, and he saw her for the first time when she was 4 mo. old- in July of 2000! She's now 5 and doing great! I think that Dr. P will most likely tell you that once Noah is corrected, you can do your follow-up appointments with Dr. Colburn in California. Have a safe trip to Iowa- you'll never regret it. Hopefully you can write us a note while you're there (the RMD house has computers)! Its so nice talking to people who understand this topic and who are going through the same thing you are. Its very comforting to know their are others out there because going through this alone is extreamly hard. Thanks for the support! I'm going in a week to Dr. P I will probubly be there about 3 weeks and if I do get to stay in the Mc house I will write you guys and let you know how everything is going. take care! Guest guest
Hi thats so great to hear that your daughter is doing great, I hope to also have a sucess story when my son is 5. Yes I'm so greatful to have found Dr. P and all of you guys are the ones who really made me realize that I am making the right decision, thank you so much. I dont know why Kaiser didnt refer me to Dr. Colburn but doctor Ponseti did. By that point though I had already decided to go see Dr. P himself and Dr Colburn is about 8 hours away from me so I would be spending alot of money on plain tickets, hotel rooms ect going up there so I would rather spend the money on going to Iowa. Your daughter was alos 4 months old, did this delay her development? Did she crawl and walk at a normal age or did this make he late? My son is very active and already rolls all around the room he never stops moving I'm not so much worried about the casts because that is such a short time but the shoes with the bar 24/7 for 3 months I'm afraid will delay him in crawling then put his development behind. Did you experiance any of that? Did she cry alot when she had to wear the bar? or the casts? Well I will definitly write while in Iowa if I stay at the Mc house. Guest guest
, I'm going to nudge my way into this conversation. I'm sure will reply also. My son was 5 months before we started Ponseti casting and 7 months before he got his bar. He crawled at 8 months which is pretty good for the little guy. Other than that, he is a whirlwind of activity and I wish the bar would slow him down just a bit. Does stairs, walks it behind a toy, cruises furniture, and his latest feat, climbs up drawers to sit in the top one. I am just hoping the thing will keep him off the top of the refridgerator. A baby's brain say let's move so they do, with or without the hardware. mom to Tenny 7/15/04 rt. cf. Guest guest
, Yep, 's experience is the same as ours. She didn't have one bit of problem adjusting and no delays. She learned to sit up with the brace, she learned to crawl and pull to a stand and even " cruise " with the brace on. If your little one wants to go, they'll go! She wore it for the fulltime period (23 hours per day) from the approximate age of 5 months-8 months. Yes, it's harder to do the full- time wear at this age versus when they're very young and not mobile- but you get through it and it's not too bad. Some kids are doing the fulltime wear stage at a much older age than this! Guest guest
, She is so adorable! that makes me feel so much better. I would hate for anything to slow him down and I want to keep the bar on him faithfully to prevent any relapses. thats so cool she did all that stuff with the bar, thats amazing. I guess nothing can stop them when they put their little minds to it. I feel alot better thanks. jennyandkelly wrote: , Yep, 's experience is the same as ours. I think that Dr. P will most likely tell you that once Noah is corrected, you can do your follow-up appointments with Dr. Colburn in California. Have a safe trip to Iowa- you'll never regret it. Hopefully you can write us a note while you're there (the RMD house has computers)! Guest guest
yes I know I'm not looking forward to it! But when its all over with it will be well worth it! ph Grush wrote:Yep, foots beautiful. Looking back, the three months doesn't seem like such a big deal. But during the middle of them, I didn't think they would ever end. Noah will be going crazy before you know it. Re: Re: New here and our story Hi thats so great to hear that your daughter is doing great, I hope to also have a sucess story when my son is 5.
