Guest guest
Hi My son was bilateral. He is now 2 and 3 months and his calves are not at all thin. He has chunky little legs and everything looks in proportion. His feet are quite small but we think he was doomed to have small feet anyway as me and his dad don't have big feet. Sleepsuits are fine with casts but you won t be able to use anything with feet once you get the foot brace. I cut feet out of some of ours but they aren't the same after so I just started buying them without feet. It does get easier..... -- thin calves... Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the group. Just wanted to answer you about the thin calves. Our son Dinos was born bilateral CF and corrected with the Ponseti Method by Dr. Feldman and Dr. Ponseti. I have just posted some photos of him in the " Files " section of this site, so you can see his legs. The photos show him at 2 months, just after casting, and again at 2 years. He does not have thin calves, but funnily, it appears that he does because his thigh muscles are HUGE. Really huge. We think this is because when he was in casts, which started when he was three days old, he was swinging his legs all over the place. He could easily lift up both legs, with casts toe to groin, and throw them over his head. Or just clunk me in the face with them when I was changing diapers or feeding him. (Watch out and expect some bruises. The bar is just as bad.) Anyway, we think he just has these enormous thighs from lifting casts for three months and then the DBB for 2 1/2 years. But his feet are beautiful, his legs are strong, and he is one fast little guy. Good luck to you! Guest guest
My Livie has a unilateral left clubfoot. Her clubfoot side most definitely has a thinner calf than the non-clubfoot side. As a baby it was not at all apparent, but as she grows and loses baby fat it is becoming more noticable. It's not so much that people are horrified by it though, lol. Rarely does anybody even notice unless it is pointed out to them. As to sleepers with casts, I can't honestly remember what we did. How bad is that? I do now that we have never used sleepers with feet in them, but that's more because of the brace than the casts. I don't think the casting phase was so hard with finding clothing, it became more of an issue after she got her brace. Good luck to you! Jen & Livie (10-18-01 severe left clubfoot) thin calves... Guest guest
Thanks for the input folks! -- I can see maybe with unilateral there may be a slight difference. I guess the Dr. has to tell you all possibilities!? > > Hi Folks, > > > > 2 questions actually for those currently with children whom have had > > bilateral CF. how thin are the calves on your child?, through pics I > > have looked at on the net, these children's feet and calves look > very > > normal, they do not look like they have extremely thin > > calves!??....also, what kind of clothes are best for casts!....can > my > > little guy when he is born wear onesies and sleepers!?? > > > > Any advice would be appreciated! > > > > A
Guest guest
Also I have noticed that children with cf that had not been treated with by Dr.'s specialized in the ponseti method seem to have surgeries and leg issues, ie: small calves, leg pains etc...am I right!?? Guest guest
Hi, re: how to dress your baby with the casts on his legs - we pretty much only dressed our daughter in onesies and sleepsacks when she was an infant. Of course, it was July in Atlanta, so we had to do what we could to keep her cool! We swaddled her as well - thank goodness for swaddling, it saved us! We'd put her in a T-shirt and then use the Miracle Blanket (http://www.miracleblanket.com). Once she got out of the casts, we dressed her in pants that snap through the crotch and legs. Otherwise, it was a pain to change her diapers. Also, try to find sleepers that snap, I wouldn't recommend any with " feet " though. > Hi Folks, > > 2 questions actually for those currently with children whom have had > bilateral CF. how thin are the calves on your child?, through pics I > have looked at on the net, these children's feet and calves look very > normal, they do not look like they have extremely thin > calves!??....also, what kind of clothes are best for casts!....can my > little guy when he is born wear onesies and sleepers!?? > > Any advice would be appreciated! > > A

Guest guest
My son was in his first casts at 4 days old. We always put him in footed pajamas. They stretch...it looked a little off, but it did the trick. We even flew internationally with footed jammies on, per my dr.'s orders so that we wouldn't be questioned, and no one even noticed. I didn't find any clothes that my son couldn't wear. And his calves have always looked normal. His first doctor told us he would never have muscle or fat in his calves...he is now 14 months old, and his calves look pretty chubby like the rest of him. Good luck! > > > Hi Folks, > > > > 2 questions actually for those currently with children whom have had > > bilateral CF. how thin are the calves on your child?, through pics I > > have looked at on the net, these children's feet and calves look very > > normal, they do not look like they have extremely thin > > calves!??....also, what kind of clothes are best for casts!....can my > > little guy when he is born wear onesies and sleepers!?? > > > > Any advice would be appreciated! > > > > A > > >
Guest guest
that seems to be the concensus from a lot of people (their childs calves do not look abnormal) I think the Dr. has to tell you all the possibilities that could happen with a child with CF, or else they could be liable, just the same when I had my implants done, my surgeon told me all the possible things that could go wrong etc..etc.... > > > Hi Folks, > > > > > > 2 questions actually for those currently with children whom have had > > > bilateral CF. how thin are the calves on your child?, through pics I > > > have looked at on the net, these children's feet and calves look very > > > normal, they do not look like they have extremely thin > > > calves!??....also, what kind of clothes are best for casts!....can my > > > little guy when he is born wear onesies and sleepers!?? > > > > > > Any advice would be appreciated! > > > > > > A > > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi, just a note from an older cf boy's mom! Evan will be 5 next month and is a pretty skinny kid! However, his calves ARE even thinner! His knees look a bit knobby to me and the calves definitely look excessively small. As a younger child in the baby fat stages, it was not noticeable. But as he grows taller and has lost that fat, it is becoming more pronounced. I guess everyone is different... But he runs like the wind and that's all that matters!!!! Guest guest
Just a question......did you r Dr.'s use the Ponseti method, because I just read a story of a bot named Evan whom had casts weekly, b- weekly, and then monthly (not Ponseti method)....and then had to have 2 major surgeries, and his calves are very thin he experiences pain often > > > > > Hi Folks, > > > > > > > > > > 2 questions actually for those currently with children whom > > have had > > > > > bilateral CF. how thin are the calves on your child?, > through > > pics I > > > > > have looked at on the net, these children's feet and calves > > look very > > > > > normal, they do not look like they have extremely thin > > > > > calves!??....also, what kind of clothes are best for > > casts!....can my > > > > > little guy when he is born wear onesies and sleepers!?? > > > > > > > > > > Any advice would be appreciated! > > > > > > > > > > A > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Just adding my understanding of this, as the mom of an older child, treated by Dr. Ponseti. Unfortunately, thinner calves, and a smaller foot, are a part of clubfoot, whether treated surgically or not. (Even children in parts of the world where clubfoot is left completely untreated have thinner calves.) There is variation among individuals, of course. Here are stats giving a range of difference; the second set of numbers in each case is from a Dr. Ponseti study. ....................... Physically Observable Results after Successful Treatment The following results show a variation of affects depending on the severity of each child's condition regardless of treatment with non- surgical or surgical correction. (Dr. Lehman, chapter 34, Disorders of the Foot and Ankle, 1979-1987) (Ponseti 1980 study) 1. Shoe Size, Shortening of the Affected Foot, from 0-4 cm (average 1.6cm) (Ponseti's 1980 study mean difference was 1.3 cm) 2. Difference between the Width of the Feet, 0-.6 cm (average 0.3cm) (Ponseti's 1980 study mean difference was 0.4 cm) 3. Difference in Circumference of the Calves, 0-5.5 cm (average 2.5 cm) (Ponseti's 1980 study mean difference was 2.3 cm) ........................ Clubfoot involves the leg from below the knee down. The calf can't be bulked up by exercise, because the muscle tissue is different. I spoke to Dr. Ponseti about this just this week. My daughter is now 5. The calf of her affected leg is indeed thinner. People don't seem to notice unless it's pointed out, but it's definitely skinnier and less meaty. It doesn't keep her, though, from having great function. She runs, jumps, dances.. does anything any kid can do. She can hop on one foot (her cf foot), unsupported.. though not as many times as on her other. The main reason for seeking out nonsurgical treatment is to have the best chance of a functional, pain-free foot into adulthood. We traveled halfway across the country to avoid the major surgery and get this treatment, and our daughter is doing wonderfully. But the thinner calf is something I can't do anything about.. it used to worry me, thinking ahead; but now I don't obsess. I suppose when she is older it might cause her some self-concsiousness.. I hope to help her be strong and build her confidence to get through it. For now I count our blessings on how well she is doing. And honestly.. it is not something I think about or that jumps out at people. She looks like (and is) a completely normal little girl. You're doing a good job doing your research.. best wishes! and Claire > Just a question......did you r Dr.'s use the Ponseti method, because > I just read a story of a bot named Evan whom had casts weekly, b- > weekly, and then monthly (not Ponseti method)....and then had to > have 2 major surgeries, and his calves are very thin he experiences > pain often > >
Guest guest
No, I know of that Evan too. But we're not that family. Our dr. used Ponseti (Dr. Mosca and Schmale in Seattle)exactly. Our Evan has had no surgeries and has no pain at all--just the skinny little calves!!! Guest guest
My baby boy, to be born in October was diagnosed with bilateral CF, so there is not going to be a difference in the lags, both will be fine, but I have long thin legs, and my husband has thin calves too, so it probably will not be a strange thing looking at his parents! Thanks for all the input!
