Hello,

I am fairly new to the chat group and wanted to share my experience with you

about our ortho visit. His name is Dr. Vu here in Phx and he claims to follow

Ponseti's method. My son Diego was born 3/24/05 w/bc. He was cast since before

he was 24 hours old and has had a tenotomy. He has been in the Markell boots

since 6/25/05. His feet look great but Dr. said that he has to wear the shoes

23/7 for 3 years. He told me that when Diego begins to pull up and stand that

I can remove the bar so that he can crawl/walk but he has to remain in the

shoes for the 23 hours????? I asked him how closely he followed Ponseti's method

and he said very, but it just doesn't make sense?? Has anyone had a similiar

experience??

On a different note, I met a wonderful woman on this site who lives in Az and

has offered much support and a trip to see Dr. Ponseti. She will be taking

her 2 year old beautiful son who is in the shoes and has beautiful feet

and I will be taking my little Diego to get Dr. Ponseti to work his magic.

Thank you to all who write and support us all, I feel so blessed to be part of

this support group!

Kindly,

mom of Diego BCC

Another LIAR!!! This isn't the Ponseti Method at all. The shoes by

themselves are absolutely worthless for your son's feet. Even more

worthless than AFO's. Jeez! You ONLY do 23/7 for 3 months. Then

you can reduce gradually (about every 3mo's) till he's at 14-16 till

walking. Then he wears them at least 14hr/d (or 12-14 - that's not

100% clarified yet - some discussion about that recently) till he's

3-4yo. I suggest that you email Dr. Ponseti and tell him this doc is

saying he's following the method and tell him your plan. He will

reply with the above information (maybe more specific) and you can

then print it and take it to your Doc and tell him that you will be

following that protocol only. He is not following the method if he's

not bracing properly and his patients will likely have issues. I

feel sorry for the parents who accept this 23/7 forever crap (sorry~

but's crap!). I would imagine the major majority of parents won't

follow through with that much full time wear anyway, and if you

discard the bar at walking and just wear the shoes alone relapse is

very likely. The major growth spurts that happen between 2 and 5yo

are what forces the relapses for those who discard the bar early and

that's why it's necessary for the 12-14hr till release. I sincerely

doubt 23/7 wear for over a year will ward this off, there is no point

in doing it that way. Your son should be able to wear normal shoes

when he's not in the brace, in fact barefoot is actually good for his

feet. Surely not stiff soled straight last $90 shoes...

LOL! Well I should read the whole post before I start replying

huh? So you're leaving that doc anyway? Whoohoo! I still think you

should email Dr. P and show his reply to that doc. He needs to know

he's been called on it by a smart parent. That's so great you have a

traveling companion! Very cool! You won't be disappointed, that's for sure.

Thank you for sharing your story!!!

Best wishes on your trip to Iowa. Please keep us posted as you're

able. You and Diego will love Dr. P! :)

It sounds like you need to print off the Global HELP booklet about

the Ponseti method and share it with Dr. Vu! :)

Hi ,

Just a thought - there is a Ponseti certified doctor here in Tucson,

AZ. Have you tried contacting him? I spoke with him on the phone and

based on the conversation, he follows the Ponseti method correctly.
