What it means when it says 1/2 -- is that you can use 1/2 of an 8 oz solution per nostril.

You do want to mix ONE FULL PACKET PER 8 OZ.

My ENT told me to go ahead and use it daily-- and it was ok to use the full 8oz PER NOSTRIL.

For people that have normal bodies, they can probably get away with using the rinse two or three times weekly-- but honestly, with our sarc and hypertrophic turbinates (too much sponge in the sinus)-- I've found this works so well- and I know that if I don't use it before I go to bed, I will be getting up to use it- so that I can tolerate my CPAP.

Take care,

I finally got the nerve up to try the nettie pot tonight. I used a full packet of powder although it said you might want to start out with 1/2. It was a little scary pouring water up your nose but it felt better right away. Just a tiny bit of sting like you had been swimming in a pool underwater. I'm just not sure how often you can use it. Nothing in the enclosed papers so I guess I'll google it. My daughter was more concerned I might fall trying to get over the low bathroom sink and twisting my head in the correct position but it wasn't too awkward. Thanks Tracie! I don't think the instuctions were well written or my sarc brain just didn't get it. They definately didn't say how often you could use it. It felt pretty good & still feels alot better. My nose is so dry I couldn't whip up even a tiny boogerette! Dr Oz was on the Oprah show & talked about using water & a tiny amount of salt. I'm sure the package refills are high priced.Join our Sock Challenge for Orphans in Kazakhstan - 265 pairs needed by 9/15/07 http://groups. yahoo.com/ group/Mittens_ for_Akkol/ grannylunatic@...

For those that do not have a nettie pot you can get Ocean spray or the generic at Walmart and it is salt water and it works great.

, when I used to provide infant care, down in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, we had the moms mix 1/4 tsp. salt in 1 cup of warm water for the nasal stuffiness. That might be a little mild for an adult; I'll try to find out for sure. For myself & the grandkids, I just dump a little salf in some warm water & taste it--if it's too salty, I add more water! Real scientific! We use it for stuffy noses--they just put a couple of drops at the nostrils & snort it up--and sore/swollen throats--just gargle & spit out. If you are putting it into your sinuses, it should probably be a more precise mixture. I rarely get sinusitis, but even when I do, I'm afraid to flush them out. Years ago when my kids were small, I tried to do an underwater flip, because Ginny could do it. I did the flip, but got water up in my sinuses that caused the most intense headache I've ever had. It only lasted a few minutes; I guess the water drained out. But I never tried the flip again; even knowing to blow out through my nose wasn't enough, and I'm stubborn about using a nose clip. Now this summer I accidentally did a back flip underwater when I tipped backward off a big swim ring! I didn't get water in my sinuses then, or get a headache, so I must have instinctively blown out, but I haven't been able to get up the nerve to do it again, on purpose!

So the point of this, and yes, I have a point, is: why doesn't flushing out your sinuses cause a headache like that? Am I just weird? (Yeah, yeah, I know I'm weird, but about this?) Has anyone else had this experience? Okay, time's up; I heard the gong.

I get the Sinus Rinse refill packages 100 count for 11.00. It's just easier to do that than to bother with trying to store the homemade stuff. Around here, and Tor would figure it's junk and toss it out.

The initial kit with the bottle and 50 ct pck-- is also about $11.00. The NASOGEL (NeilMed) is probably about the same-- I've not used it-- but I do have a trial one from one of the boxes I bought.

It's the "saline"- salt-- that makes it sinus friendly. Fresh tap water alone is not is organ friendly- inless you're drinking it. Add the salt, balance the ph with the baking soda (it neutralizes it) and you're good to squirt away.

As for the "weird" part-- yep, you're right you are weird...

Okay, so what you're saying, Tracie, is that chlorinated pool water is NOT good for our sinuses? Dang, seems like bleach would be good, kill germs, etc. So then, if I did a flip in the ocean, assuming I didn't hit my head on the bottom, it wouldn't hurt? Just trying to clear things up.

Could sarc be the reason why my turbinates are overgrown

Good question-- As I said, I had the same problem, and whether it was because of the sarc- or genetics-- I honestly don't know. I'll see if I can find some info on this one.

Would saline nasal spray do the same thing? It is very cheap.

Saline spray is great to use throughout the day-- keeps the allergens way down, and the sinuses moist. But it doesn't wash out the gunk. The Sinus Rinse or homemade saline used in a water pik, or a squeeze bottle or a nettie pot-- works great to flush the sinuses. Then you use the Nasogel to keep them from feeling so dry. It'd be good at night, especially for those of us on cpaps and oxygen.

Remember the Humibid LA-- that is good to keep the mucus from turning to concrete. You can now get it over the counter-- and Costco has it in both the regular and the DM-- which suppresses cough.

Take care,

Tracie
