KC,

That happened to me twice in 8 months. It wasnt a whole lot and never got on my clothes. I dont remember it smelling bad......

I think once your bowels get accustomed to doing its plumbing a different way, things settle down and the orange oil leak seems to go away too. If it only happened to me twice might have been due to alot of fat ingestion without thinking but I cant remember what I ate when that happened. I wouldnt worry about it if I were you.....it wont happen on a daily basis, I can say that much!

K.C.: Hi! Congrats on your surgery date next month. I have never been on

Xenical, but I've heard the side effects *can be* similar to that of DS. I

have had a few times when I went to the bathroom and some oily orange

discharge came out (usually accompanied by quite a bit of gas, I don't mean

to be graphic, either! LOL)... I never had an uncontrollable 'leak' or any

noticable problems with it. It occured a few times and didn't persist. It

most likely was related to something really fatty that I ate. In general, I

do not consume a lot of fatty foods, so perhaps my experience is so limited

because of this.

I've read other people having this problems so I know that some post-ops have

dealt with this (uncontrollable 'oil leak'). If you look in the archives and

do a search I'm sure you'll find some older posts that discuss this issue.

There's another board 'DS_postopproblems' and I recall this coming up there

as well.

I don't know whether you would experience this as a DS post-op and/or whether

it would be to a similar degree. However, I know that this is a possible

side effect of the surgery with high fat consumption. It is not a problem

that every post-op deals with but some bodies do react this way with high fat

meals as post-op DSers. I think there was at least one other person who had

taken Xenical and then experienced something similar as a post-op DSer (or

they were wondering about it). Once again, the archive search would reveal

this information for you.

I'm six months post-op and this surgery has been wonderful for my system.

I've had gas pains (especially in the first three weeks), but nothing

outrageous. I've had loose stools (once again, these were par for the first

three weeks but I rarely have them now), but nothing uncontrollable. I've

been able to eat dairy and any other food. I've had high fat foods but I

don't think I've always had an 'oil leak' whenever I ate them. I just recall

having some oily discharge when going to the bathroom a few times (and being

really gassy). It may have been high fat that was the culprit or the fact

that I had just eaten that food and my body hadn't yet gotten used to it?

I think it would be really interesting to see if there is any correlation

between the experiences people have on Xenical and as post-op DSers. The

drug and surgery are not identical but the premise of how weight is lost

through malapsorption is.

all the best,

I took Xenical for a month and lost about 10 pounds. I still have 2

boxes sitting around the house. My bowel movements were explosive

and unpredictable. I would have an uncontrolable urge to break wind

followed by the orange stain. And it smelled foul. After a month of

this I'd had enough.

Post-op I do occasionally notice an oily discharge in the toilet after

eating high fat food. But I never have the oily stain in my

undergarments and all of my bowel movements can be controlled.

Although it did take a few weeks to get used to their new rythym. I do

not worry about breaking wind and soiling myself.

Thanks for writing back. I am so happy to hear that you have not

experienced this nasty side effet. I also discontinued the Xenical because

I could not live with the problem. Do you happen to know the length of your

common channel? 50cm 75cm or 100cm?

I had that oily orange stuff for about 3 weeks. Only once did I lose

control. Now it seems to be blended into my BMs. And I don't have a

BM every day any more. Some days 2-3, sometimes I skip a day.
