Guest guest
Bonnie, (a wonderful name by the way!) Congratulations on your coming arrival! My daughter also has bilateral club feet and we knew in advance as well. I'm also a dedicated babywearer and worked through issues with my daughter both in the casts and with the FAB and I'll share what I learned. First I'd encourage you not to buy the bjorn. With children without casts to weigh down their legs, long term use presses on their spines incorrectly and can cause some pain. Why don't you check out the following websites and check out slings, pouches, wraps and mei tais. I discovered that for the casting process any of them worked fine but I preferred the sling and wrap depending on where we were and what we were doing. When the bar entered the picture we still used the sling some but the mei tai worked well because you can stick the material through their legs before you wrap the top half. I have a girlfriend that used a wrap successfully with the FAB as well. If you have any questions please feel free to ask! Some websites for you to check out are www.mamatoto.org, www.peppermint.com, www.thebabywearer.com and http://www.kellymom.com/parenting/sling.html#sewing all have wonderful info and help with making your own if you want to try one before buying so to speak. The babywearer has a forum where you can get info, ask questions and even purchase used carriers from other mommas at reduced cost if you'd rather try it that way. Finally after checking out the others you might want to try http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/index.html?Baby/index.html as she has some sewing instructions that differ a bit from others and she has a unique perspective as well. There are other options and if you live where there is an active babywearing group they might actually come to you to help you get comfortable using them and trying them out. HTH, Chris baby carrier question Hi everyone, I would like to introduce myself, as I am new to the group. My name is Bonnie and my baby (who is due in Sept.) has been diagnosed with bilateral clubfeet. We live in GA and will be traveling to Sinai in Baltimore to receive the Ponsti treatment from Dr. Herzenberg. My question is regarding those baby carriers. Is it possible to use them when the baby has the full-length casts on both legs? I was planning on buying one of those Baby Bjorn carriers until I realized that it might be uncomfortable for the baby. Just curious if anyone has ever tried using them. I thought the carrier would be easier to carry the baby while traveling back and forth for my appts. Thanks, Bonnie
Guest guest
Bonnie, I have no comment on the baby carrier, because I never used one. I did want to comment on an excellent choice of doctor you picked. I love Dr. Herzenberg, you made the right choice! Welcome to the group. Guest guest
Hi Bonnie! Congrats and welcome! We were told by Dr. Ponseti that the baby carrier would be fine. We were told by our physical therapist that we shouldn't do it simply because it encouraged the wide leg stance and put pressure on the hips. My jason (severe atypical bcf) is double jointed in his hips and very flexible. He could rotate his legs around each side of his body from laying down with them behind him to all of a sudden sitting up with them in front of him, FREAKY!! Because of that they thought he had hip dysplasia and did whatever we could to not encourage that. Turns out he was just very very flexible, but we still chose not to encourage it. However, Dr. P said it would be just fine, so if you don't notice any wide leggedness , I would probably keep it just to the appointments, but shoot! Go ahead and give it a shot! Again, congrats and welcome! mitchells 16 hrs faithfully 10-09-03 > Hi everyone, > I would like to introduce myself, as I am new to the group. Guest guest
Bonnie, Your timing with this question was perfect. My husband and I just received the Kelty Wallaby (like the Bjorn) as a gift yesterday. My husband played with all the buckles and then concluded that we wouldn't be able to use it with the brace. We initially decided not to return it until after the baby's born, since we might still get use out of it since you can only use it up to 25lbs (How old is a baby at 25lbs anyway??) But we'll consider the alternatives -- Thank you to for the websites! Due 10/30/05 (26 week ultrasound confirmed bilateral cf) ps. We live in Pgh, PA and we decided to treat with Dr. Herzenberg as well. > Bonnie, (a wonderful name by the way!) > > Congratulations on your coming arrival! Guest guest
Hi , 25 lbs can come real fast or can take forever like my son who is 18 months and just 21 lbs. now! LOL Good luck!!! We see Dr. H also! Re: baby carrier question Bonnie, Your timing with this question was perfect. My husband and I just received the Kelty Wallaby (like the Bjorn) as a gift yesterday. Guest guest
Hi , I got a chuckle out of your (How old is a baby at 25lbs anyway??). I'm not sure I know Collin is going to be 4 this month and is 32 lbs so I deffianlty can't imagine carrying them in the sling at 25 lbs. I haven't heard back yet about the Baltimore Conference but once I do I will be sure to e-mail you. Thanks for the giggle! Guest guest
I'm not sure yet it depends on if parents are welcomed this year, etc. I don't think there is an acutal " clubfoot day " with sample kids like last year, etc. I'm still checking into it, as soon as I find out anything I'll let you know. I want to go this year (with out Collin LOL!) and just listen if Dr. Herzenberg lets us. It looks like they will be talking about the taylor spatial frame (exteranal fixator) a lot this year, so I would be interested in hearing that and any other clubfoot info. I e-mailed his secretary Sheila today but I haven't heard back yet, I'll let you know. Michele

Guest guest
Thanks Michele! I'm thinking we should return the carrier - we'll probably prefer the frame back-pack style child carrier by the time the baby is 25 lbs! When I talked to Dr. H last month, he mentioned he is publishing a 3- month study -- success rates for using Ponsetti method for children 3 months and older and previously treated without sucess. I imagine he'll be discussing it at the Conference. > Hi , > > I got a chuckle out of your (How old is a baby at 25lbs anyway??). > I'm not sure I know Collin is going to be 4 this month and is 32 lbs > so I deffianlty can't imagine carrying them in the sling at 25 lbs. Guest guest
, Glad you will find something that works before the baby is here. Guest guest
Just catching the end of this discussion, I'm really behind. But my kiddos were all big healthy ones--they hit 25 lbs. around 5/6 months...we also couldn't continue using their infant car seats because of that. So it really does depend on how your baby grows! > > Hi , > > > > I got a chuckle out of your (How old is a baby at 25lbs anyway??). > > I'm not sure I know Collin is going to be 4 this month and is 32 lbs > > so I deffianlty can't imagine carrying them in the sling at 25 lbs. > I > > haven't heard back yet about the Baltimore Conference but once I do > I > > will be sure to e-mail you.
