Guest guest
Firstly, someone asked why going to Iowa wasnt an option right now. My husband is deployed yet again, only for a month this time, we have 3 other kids and 2 of them just started the school year today. We have no family or close friends here to help out. And, we're supposed to be moving in 2 months. Someone suggested that maybe the boots were too big and thinking back, this 'did' start to happen when we got new shoes. I still have his old shoes but couldnt use his right one b/c he's all but ripped the boot off the sole, so I took the left boot and put it on the right side of his bar. I put him down in the shoes last night and he took them off twice. Once before 8PM and the second time was a little before 2AM. He's supposed to be taking his morning nap now with the shoes on and when I went to check on him screaming, he had already pulled his foot out to the point where the heel was at the top of the shoe. I took it off and put it back on. Its not that he's unlacing the shoes.. he's pulling his feet out w/ them still strapped and laced. As for the military and my options: First, I warned my husband via email just how much of a fight this is going to be. I called Tricare South this AM about finding a qualified provider, altho' I know there arent any in this area. They sent me on a wild goose chase and after calling 5 people, I gave up. I told the benefits counselor that there arent any qualified providers in FL, AL, South GA, MS or LA. In order to receive care in Hawaii, Id have to switch our benefits to Tricare West first.... but I dont need to do that until I know we're really going over there. I called my husbands Master Chief and told him what was going on and it took awhile to get him to understand just HOW imperative it is that Elijah be treated by a qualified person. He suggested that I call our PCM, family doctor, and ask for a referral first of all. Im waiting on them to return my call now. Master Chief said that they might fly me to Bethesda Naval Medical Center and I explained that still didnt get me to a certified provider. I saw that Dr Herzenberg is also in land so I dont see why I couldnt get a referral to him. In fact, for that matter, I should be able to get a referral to Dr Ponseti himself, and the Navy would provide travel. I asked about a Temporary TAD to Hawaii for treatment like Faith suggested and he said that the Navy, nor the command would pay for that since it was the end of the fiscal year and everyone's out of money. If I go the route with the referral, the Navy's medical program would cover the costs. My fear is that all this crap is going to take too long and I'll end up waiting the two months anyway before seeing someone qualified. Thanks to everyone that contacted me on the board and privately. Ya'll have helped me to keep a level head about it and not give into the stress of it all. Lori

Guest guest
I forgot to add that Ive since taken his shoes off the bar and he's just wearing the shoes now. He's done well w/ maintaining his 70 deg ext. rot. so Im not really worried about losing ground there. However, Im starting to notice slight changes in his foot so I figure its better to have the foot straight and flat than nothing at all. My mom commented during our trip home last week that he slings his right foot out when he's walking. Has anyone else noticed that with clubfoot babies? I assumed that it was normal since that 70 degrees has been a constant throughout treatment. Lori

Guest guest
Lori, So he's doing fine without the bar? Are you sure the bar is the right length then? If everything is perfect with these... I'm really thinking relapse. I really hope you can get some kind of approval to see Dr. P. or Dr. Dobbs for this. Can you take any pictures of his feet and send to us at CFPics? Guest guest
My son had a pair of shoes that were too big last time. I had nothing but trouble with them. He took them off and had red marks and was crying during the night ( I don't know why) and so I got the size smaller. From that night on the shoes have stayed on, red marks are gone and he sleeps through (most nights). Some children fair ok with the bigger shoes but I definately will not be getting them bigger again for him. I guess we are lucky as we are in the UK and don't have to pay for them anyway but even so it wasn't worth the hassle. His toes were maybe 1/2 inch from the end with these so that is how I will measure them again. I also adjusted the bar in slightly as I have always set them shoulder width from the edge of the heels but I took them in one mark and it is more shoulder width from the bolts now and this seemed to help slightly. I also emailed Dr Ponseti with some pictures and he said it would be ok to turn the degree down to 60 degrees now (he is 2) as his feet were well corrected. As it is I have them set on 65 degrees just to be safe!!!! Rach, Steve & Connor -- Elijah update ~ Markells not staying on Firstly, someone asked why going to Iowa wasnt an option right now. He's pulling at the strings trying to get them off but theyre double tied so he's not having any luck w/ that yet. I double checked the bar width last night and its perfect. Guest guest
Lori, i read your post about all the difficulties .. and the roadblocks and administrative hoops to jump through. I agree that it might take months to get it resolved, which is such a shame.. I know this might sound hard to imagine doing, but would you consider just hopping in the car with all your kids and driving to Iowa or St. Louis? You can stay in the RMH .. talk to Dr. Ponseti's or Dr. Dobbs' office about the insurance/payment issues, and see what they say.. you might be surprised that they can work it out.. just a thought.. > > >Firstly, someone asked why going to Iowa wasnt an option right > now. > > >My husband is deployed yet again, only for a month this time, we > > >have 3 other kids and 2 of them just started the school year > today. > > >We have no family or close friends here to help out.
Guest guest
, I would consider it if we were still on summer break. The girls are already going to miss alot of school when we make our PCS to Hawaii. When we moved from San Diego to here, they'd missed so much time that the school wanted to fail them. I cant risk taking them out of school for that amt. of time. Im still waiting to hear from the Dr, no phone call yet for the referral. In the meantime, Im going to check out the Shriners Hospital in New Orleans. Elijah is finally napping for the first time today ( at 2 PM ). By this time he's working on his second nap for the day. He's still tolerating the shoes OFF the bar pretty well. I know I mentioned that his last right boot was ripped from the sole. Thats how hard he wriggles to get out of it. Has anyone else had a boot come off the sole like that? It makes me wonder if its not that he's relapsing so much as he's just fighting this bar (and winning it seems). Guest guest
Ok, go back to speak with patient advocate. NOT TRICARE THEMSELVES! Also, with tricare Prime you're going to have to find someone in-network. As far as I can tell, the nearest group to you is Children's healthcare of Atl. Push to go there. If all you can get is Bethesda, make sure that they are sending you to a PEDIATRIC orthopedic surgeon, then when you get there, insist he or she uses the Ponseti method to the letter. If you don't like what you see, insist that said Dr. confer with Ponseti over the phone. If all else fails, there is always TRicare Standard. You would have to leave him out of Prime for one year after disenrollment, but like I said, with all of Gabe's various issues, I've only spent approx 600 dollars this year on medical bills. Which isn't bad as many specialists and surgeries as he's had. They will drag their feet, but if they take too long, like I said, go up the chain. (But I would keep the Master Sergeant informed ) Lastly, I forgot it was nearing to end of the fiscal year. I'll tell you a secret though... they keep lots of $ on hand till the absolute last minute in case of emergency. Then if no emergency comes up, they spend it on furniture, copiers, and office supplies no one needs. Why? If they don't spend it ALL their budget gets cut. Nice, huh? So, keep that in mind too. Your commander is still an option if only because he can pull strings. Unless, you are willing to sit on top of your child while he sleeps, I'd be a constant thorn in the medical staffs' sideand if need be your First Sergeant. Like, I said, they HAVE to do something. Did you get the pictures out to Ponseti? Call me again if you need to, ok? Lori wrote:Firstly, someone asked why going to Iowa wasnt an option right now. Guest guest
By the way, there are two Mcdonald houses in Atlanta. If all else fails and you get a referral (by the way, with Tricare Prime you don't need a referral to a specific provider, just get a referral to get civilian care for congental clubfoot). If you can afford the gas to get there and back, that would be your only expence. This might actually be your fastest route to care. I would approach the medivac office at the hospital with this proposal. They love it when they don't have to do the footwork. Tell them that all they would have to pay for is fule and per diem for you and your kids (and escort if they'll autorize it). Guest guest
The five hour drive to Atl would probably be more beneficial than going to N.O. All you need is that referal. Also, they have 48-72 hours to call you back usually. Lori and Elijah wrote:, I would consider it if we were still on summer break. Guest guest
Hi there, I would like to add that Dr. sy treated my daughter, and she is doing wonderfully. He is a Ponseti-qualified orthopedist, and he was so great with Addison. I would highly recommend him if you did decide to go to Atlanta. > > > >Firstly, someone asked why going to Iowa wasnt an option right > > now. > > > >My husband is deployed yet again, only for a month this time, we > > > >have 3 other kids and 2 of them just started the school year > > today. > > > >We have no family or close friends here to help out. Guest guest
Ha! ... Fule? Wow! Guess I won't get any jobs as a secretary... I mean fuel. Dr. sy is the one I mentioned yesterday, only he gave me no warm fuzzies. I may have just seen him on bad days? He is the best in that group though. People come from around the world to see him. Maybe he just didn't like me. hltrachta wrote:Hi there, I would like to add that Dr. sy treated my daughter, and she is doing wonderfully.
