Guest guest
Kelsey just has a left clubfoot but she was not really walking until she was 18 months old. She was in the FAB full time from 13-16 months and was in a cast or afo or something for most of her 1st year so I know she had problems with sensitivity of her feet. I don't think Doctors start looking at walking as abnormal until after 18 months and that is for children with healthy feet. Guest guest
Hi Jen My son (nice name!) only really walked at around 15 months. From what I've read, starting walking anytime up to 18 months is considered normal. If he's pulling himself up, he's already bearing weight. For us it seemed that it wasn't 's feet that were bothering him, but that he didn't feel very confident about his balance. Once he got over that, he progressed really fast. He didn't like us taking his hands to make him walk, but we gave him walker toys so that he could pull himself up and walk along behind them. At first he didn't enjoy the ones with 'fast' wheels at all, he seemed to lean his weight forward and the toy would race away from him and he'd immediately go to hands and knees again. His cart with wooden wheels that turned slowly was his favourite before he felt more confident about his balance. I wouldn't worry about it at this stage, every child health expert told us that the longer they crawl, the better for muscle tone, coordination, etc. Moss STEPS CHARITY www.steps.org.za walking??????? Hi everyone It's been a long time since I have posted here but thats what happens when you have three kids there's no time for yourself. My son turned " 1 " on july 11 and he has bcf and he is not walking I kmow that there is lots of time but when do I start worrying if he doesn't start. He is crawling and pulling himself up on things but when you take his hands and make him walk he doesn't want to and it seems that his feet hurt but I think that he is just not used to being on his feet. Can anybody relate or have any input. thanks in advance Jen mom to bcf 07-11-
Guest guest
It sounds like he's about ready to get going, just keep urging him to walk. If he looks really in pain consult the doc but I'm sure you know babies are kind of scared at first so it just may be normal baby fear right now instead of pain (let's hope, these feet aren't supposed to hurt!). My non-CF middle child didn't walk till 14mo. For whatever that's worth to you... Guest guest
Jen, My daughter didn't walk until she was 15 months. I, myself (no clubfeet), didn't walk until I was 18 months. Every baby is different, clubfeet or not. I wouldn't worry. He will walk when he is ready. Shook Retail Operations Manager/Baking Instructor Vie de France Yamazaki, Inc. 2070 Chain Bridge Rd. Guest guest
Hi Jen~~ Our Elijah did the same thing when you took his hands. He's the youngest of 4 kids and had been standing since 7 months old but at 1 year, he showed no interest at all in walking. He finally walked at 14 months, still average for most kids but slow compared to our other three. For him, crawling was just faster. Id try to walk him and he'd just slump down and crawl to wherever he wanted to go. Im not sure if it was b/c he had so many people in the house to carry him around that he just didnt care if he walked or not.. or what it was. BUT~~ When he finally started walking, he just took off and went. Our others would take a few steps and fall for a few weeks. Elijah started with about 7-10 steps the first time and hasnt slowed down since. I also noticed with Elijah that he'd walk when he thought no one was looking. Like he was sneaking it LOL!! Hang in there! Guest guest
Hi Jen, I'm really late in responding to this and I'm very sorry. (very severe atypical bcf) was in casts his whole first year, give or take a week or two due to two surgery preps, one before ponseti and one with ponseti. After he turned a year we had just gotten him into his mitchells and were going to physical therapy 3 times a week. Even with the help with physical therapy it wasn't until was 21 months that he began to walk. A week prior to him getting up and taking off, he flat out refused to even pull himself up. He would not walk holding my hand, he simply did not want to try. Dr. Ponseti finally referred us to Dr. Dobbs for a second opinion and we had our appointment ready, hotel ready, angel flight ready, and walla! He started walking the next morning! Give it time. is crawling and pulling himself up. That alone is a huge accomplishment! didn't start that until almost 18 months. He simply did not want to put any pressure on his feet. and now?? This boy can not go fast enough. He still will not stand up in the middle of the room, but I am hoping as his confidence grows, he will be able to one day. Hang in there and keep encouraging! Keep an eye on his feet for the signs of relapse, keep those shoes on and take it one step at a time! It will happen, in his time. Congrats on the crawling and pulling up!! mitchells 16 hrs faithfully!! 10-09-03 > Hi everyone It's been a long time since I have posted here but thats > what happens when you have three kids there's no time for yourself. > My son turned " 1 " on july 11 and he has bcf and he is not > walking I kmow that there is lots of time but when do I start worrying > if he doesn't start.
