I was initially concerned because I read these studies of peptic ulcer patients who had 'partial gastrectomies' and an increase in pancreatic cancer rate was found. I didn't know what this 'partial gastrectomy was' --- Turns out it was an ANTRECTOMY (removal of the lower stomach -- which produces acid, along with the pylorus). This is what occurs in the BPD surgery (NOT the BPD/DS -- the stomach is reduced by sleeve gastrectomy - the lower antreum and pylorus are left intact). If one were getting a BPD (and this is still a surgery performed, albeit less commonly than the DS), then I would be concerned about this connection. With the DS, it is a non-issue. However, I would mention this to Dr. Gagner just to ease your mind. He stated that the pancreatic cancer link was found with the ANTRECTOMY, not the DS. I think he specialized in gastro-intestinal cancer surgery before WLS, so I'm totally confident he knows what he's talking about. LOL As far as gastric cancer goes, I don't think there's ANY direct link to the DS (or RNY or any other surgery other than the Mini-GAstric Bypass which utilizes an older Biliroth II connection between the stomach and intestines). The only risk is that gastric cancer *can* be increased with stomach surgeries in GENERAL. I think that, unless one has a strong genetic predisposition to stomach cancer that this really wouldn't be a great risk at all. Dr. Gagner stressed that there has NOT BEEN any report of an increase in gastric cancer with any WLS surgery. You can search the archives of these boards because I did report and quote some info I found online at an earlier date.
