I have never heard of anybody's needing blood for either lap or open DS. Of course, if there were to be a major complication, all bets would be off. >Did anyone out there donate their own >blood for use during the surgery? You can make autologous blood donations. But, I don't think that you need them. Guest guest
Greg- yes, blood IS safer these days.. but if you live near your hospital where you'll be inpatient, call their blood donation center and ask them about self-donation. I don't know how much is lost during an open procedure, but I know I lost approximately 1 unit laparoscopically, which was not replaced except by IV fluids (they don't usually transfuse until the loss is higher than 1 unit, except in unusual circumstances). Because my hospital was 9 hours away, I didn't self-donate, but I thought about it because of the blood shortage nationwide and the fact that I have AB negative blood, which is pretty rare.HTH- Hugs, Liane > I'm scheduled for surgery in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering > about blood reuirements for the surgery. Guest guest
Blood loss can vary, Greg. It's pretty impossible to predict if you will need a transfusion. My doctor discussed the possibility with me, and I told him I only wanted it if my life was in danger. Blood supplies are relatively safe, but you're right, one never knows. If you could donate a pint of your own blood now, that would be perfect. I couldnt because I had my surgery out of state.
