Sure. First, you may eat even less--what may seem like not a lot now may be a big lot post-op -- and, second, your entire innards will be re-arranged, and, as a result, the way that your food will be used will change drastically. For example, only a small amount of the fat you eat will be absorbed. You will think of fat as a good thing to eat to get you off plateaus of non-weight-loss ( " fat is our friend " seems to have become the mantra of the DSers). Not all the protein you eat will be absorbed. So, a nice juicy piece of meat will be just what the doctor ordered--except that you won't be able to eat a whole lot of it for at least several months. Simple carbohydrates, on the other hand, will be almost totally absorbed, so you'll have to be good, at least in your early months, in that regard. But, many of us find that sugar-containing substances are way too sweet for us after surgery. So, instead of a bowl of ice cream, if you will like it at all after surgery, you may only take a tablespoonful or two and be satisfied. It's hard to explain further, but, your whole body, your metablolism, and your outlook will all change. It isn't all sweetness and light for about six weeks post-op, by the way. So, don't expect a wonderland immediately post-op, or you will be terribly discouraged. Just take it on faith that things may start out lousy, but will improve by the time that you are a few months out, if not sooner. Good luck, Steve -- Steve Goldstein, age 61 Lap BPD/DS on May 2, 2001 Dr. Elariny, INOVA Fairfax Hospital, Virginia Starting (05/02/01) BMI = 51 BMI on 08/04 = 42.

Guest guest
Gunn, The DS has the highest long-term success rate of all WLS, and has the highest percent of excess weight lost (around 80%). Its hard to believe that something will FINALLY work, I know. Your fears are normal. You will be so surprized and amazed as the weight comes off. Good luck!
