Guest guest
My PCP (who is grudgingly supportive) suggested that I talk to other WLS patients before I made up my mind. He gave me the phone numbers of a couple people he knew. I only actually got one on the phone. She had RNY about 5 years ago. Basically all she talked about was throwing up. It went something like " Don't eat this, you'll throw up. These really bother me and make me hurl. If you eat this, drink warm water with it, or it'll come back up, etc., etc. " She talked about 40 minutes. I haven't heard DS patients talk at length about throwing up. This RNY lady sounded like she threw up more than a bulemic. So what about it? Are DSer's hurling all the time? I bet not. Since you have all of your stomach, including a functioning valve, I'm guessing its not an issue. I also wrote half a dozen of the 'old timers' on the patient list at www.duodenalswitch.com. Most wrote me back very nice letters. All said they would do it again in a second. Even the RNY lady said she'd do it again. Geez, I HATE to throw up. I'd hate to make a habit of it. Greg P.S. I tried to talk to her some about the switch, but she didn't want to hear it, so I let it go. I guess we are all like that. If we make up our minds, and do something, none of like to hear afterwards that there might be a better way. P.P.S. I'm scheduled for Aug 15... The ONLY time I heard of DSer's hurling was when they overate, for example in a restaurant where the food looked too good to leave on the plate even though they were full. So, they ate too many bites, and had to run to the bathroom and brought up the last mouthful only. There were also several OTHER situations there some DSers wee nauseous most of the time for several weeks post-op, but things like Compazine seemed to sure those symptoms. Some said that the nausea was caused by the vagus nerve (influences acid production in the stomach) which was still traumatized from the surgery. It CAN be rough for the first 4-8 weeks, but then things get better fast. --Steve -- Steve Goldstein, age 61 Lap BPD/DS on May 2, 2001 Dr. Elariny, INOVA Fairfax Hospital, Virginia Starting (05/02/01) BMI = 51 BMI on 08/04 = 42.
