Guest guest
Right now your body is raging a battle within. That's hard work. I wouldd dugest some rest periods during the day. Don't push yourself. Listen to what your body is saying to you. My doc sent me to a hemotologist about a year ago. I needed some IV iron and also procrit. They called my problem Anemia of Chronic disease. I call it bone marrow sarcoid. They both have the same symptoms. I had to be very patient it took almost one year for the $4000.00 TO $6000.00 a week for the weekly meds. I am now down to once a month. We had stopped it for a few weeks, when I wnet for a doctor visit it had dropped again so they are going to try my getting the med once a month. Not feeling good is really the pits. You and everyone are always in my thoughts and prayers. It's hard to panic when things like this go wrong. It's like OK haven't I suffered enough give me a break. For me when things get really bad I think of the people who have ALS_Lou Gerogs disease. So put a smile on your face, put on your favorite perfume for no special reason except that you ike it and think how fortunate we are to have each other. Fpr the first 25 years there was no such thing as a support group. I value the input and encouragement that we give each other. From what I had learmed from the group I actually understood what Dr Baughman was saying during our visit last week. I am so glad that I finely broke down and went to see him. I highly encourage everyone to consider it if they do not good care where they live. Guest guest
Judy, Thank you so much for the encouragment. Right now I kind of feel isolated because everyone has busy lives....my husband won't be home from Hawaii for another 3-4 weeks. I am supposed to go to Women of Faith in Charlotte, NC at the end of the month and I hope I can muster the energy for that. I would think it would be great to start the > > > > > > Rose (and any other medical professionals), > > > > I have a question. Guest guest
Judy, did they do a bone marrow biopsy? Just wondering.. I had the same problem on Procrit, etc.. when they did a bone marrow biopsy, which, wasn't fun, it was just that I had "NO IRON" in my marrow, as soon as I was started on IRON, the HCT and HGB started improving and I haven't had to be on the Procrit since.. it was a huge difference in the cost a 2000.00 shot verses a 8.00 a month bottle of Iron tablets... Guest guest
Rose, My WBC is 2.2 and the HGB, HCT and RBC's are borderline and have fallen since my last blood work 6 wks ago. Of course I have had an increase in the Imuran since then too. I am using 200mg a day. My legs are killing me but I think that has to do with stopping the Lyrica. It was causing stomach pain. I am going to stay off for a couple of days and then rechallenge it. It has also been miserably hot until today and that may be part of it too. I wish you would have asked me about the numbers yesterday. I took my copy to the Neuro's office today. Guest guest
Rose, That is what the doctor said (as far as not getting sick). I went ahead and took the flu shot while I was there. Can I tell you what pissed me off about it? I had the blood test on Sept 27. The panic value was called to him on the 27 and do you think I got any phone call? No! I went to my appointment on October 6th and had to ask the nurse to find out my results. I am having some terrible nausea and leg pain but I am not sure exactly what may be the problem. Lyrica was causing a lot of stomach pain so I had to stop that but I will try it again soon. But the nausea is still here. As far as washing my hands, I became a habitual hand washer when i worked in OB/Gyn (MA). They are always dry too. I don't use anti bacterial hadwash. Just good old fashion regular soap and washing the correct way. I guess I probably should get some wipes for when I go shopping and have to push a cart. Thanks for the info. Guest guest
Terri, most infectious disease specialists don't recommend routine use of the antibacterial soaps, because of the risk of more drug resistance, but you really have to look to find the plain soap! The main thing, and I'm sure you know this but the nonmedical folks may not, is to wash well for at least 20 sec. It's surprising how long that actually is! If you say the abc's or sing the abc song at a normal rate, that's about right. In a public restroom, you might not want to sing it out loud. But I do keep Clorox wipes at home, because of all the kids & at least 2 of them are MRSA carriers. You can use the wipes on the computer keyboard, so about once a week or more often if someone's been snotting much, I wipe down the mouse, keyboard, phones, light switches, doorknobs, etc. I think that might be a good idea for you, with that low white count.
Guest guest
Rose, You are probably right. I don't have visitors very often but when my husband gets home at the end of the month I will have to be sure to do that. He rarely gets sick but that doesn't mean he won't be kind enough to bring some germs home. I am concerned about going to my Women of Faith conference with this low wbc. Can you imagine how many people there are going to be???? I am going to call my PCP today because I realized since I have increased to the 200mg some pretty severe joint pain going on that I just assumed was the osteoarthritis. But this is totally different. So I am going to call today. We will see how long it will take for him to call me back. Also, I forgot to mention that if you sing Happy Birthday while you are washing your hands, it is long enough to kill the germs. I saw this in a hospital training film. But don't worry, I won't sing it in public. Thanks for your concern. Guest guest
Terri & Rose, It's so hard to keep away from all the bacteria in the house. It feels like it's almost impossible, doesn't it? Rose , you have a good idea by keeping the Clorox wipes around. A couple of weeks ago, my son came down with this really bad cold that landed in his chest. I kept telling him to wash his hands especially if used the computer. But sure enough I caught the cold probably from using the same computer. The cold put down for 2 weeks. The germs around, sometimes it makes me feel like wearing latex gloves around the house! Debbie T. Guest guest
Terri & Rose, That is an awful WBC - I had the same WBC after first starting taking Remicade infusions . I remember I was so excited that my insurance covered the Remicade and I was looking forward to the infusions and having it help me. Well, after 2 infusions , that's when my WBC went down so low. The doctor said take her off the Remicade right away. I asked if I could start the infusions again in the future when my count got better, but he told me I could never start the Remicade again. I was so disappointed. Anyway, Rose is right, really keep an eye on the issue of "germs" until your WBC goes up. It is a very important issue. Debbie T. Guest guest
Terri, I would love to be there with you at Women of Faith! I went to one in Chicago years ago, then again in Indianapolis a couple of years later. By the second one I was having the hearing problems & I couldn't stand the singing of thousands of women! That had been my favorite part the first time, but now I don't just have hearing loss; it sounds like I'm listening through broken speakers. It's tolerable for a cd or music in church, but not in an arena! Besides handwashing, the important thing is to keep your fingers off your face. I'm bad at rubbing my eyes or nose, which is the favorite port of entry for our germy friends. So even though you can't avoid picking up some bugs in any public place, if you keep your hands away from your face (if you're like me, you might have to sit on them or wear mittens!) & wash your hands frequently, you will probably be all right. As long as no one coughs or sneezes right in your face. BTW, what happened to your cute little smileys? I ended up removing the program from my computer because I was having lots of problems & read that you could pick up spyware, etc. from it. I miss it! Hotmail only has a few. Guest guest
Debbie, I even keep a big dispenser of hand cleaner on the computer desk, but they don't use it! I also take the Clorox wipes on the few occasions that I stay in a hotel. After watching a couple of exposes on 20/20 or whatever, I'm leery of everything in a hotel room. Even the expensive hotels had all kinds of nasty stuff & there is a reason that most of the bedspreads are multi-colored--hides a lot of stains. Those of you that watch CSI know the stuff that shows up under special lights. Yuck. But I wipe the phone, doorknobs, thermostat, etc. I remember in one place the investigators cultured E. Coli from the phone. They figured the maid had cleaned the bathroom, then wiped the phone with the same rag! Now, don't get me started on the shows about restaurants.
