Debbie, I even keep a big dispenser of hand cleaner on the computer desk, but they don't use it! I also take the Clorox wipes on the few occasions that I stay in a hotel. After watching a couple of exposes on 20/20 or whatever, I'm leery of everything in a hotel room. Even the expensive hotels had all kinds of nasty stuff & there is a reason that most of the bedspreads are multi-colored--hides a lot of stains. Those of you that watch CSI know the stuff that shows up under special lights. Yuck. But I wipe the phone, doorknobs, thermostat, etc. I remember in one place the investigators cultured E. Coli from the phone. They figured the maid had cleaned the bathroom, then wiped the phone with the same rag! Now, don't get me started on the shows about restaurants.

Rose,

I am like you. I am always putting my hands to my face, especially

rubbing my eyes!. They always seem to be bothering me.

> Terri, I would love to be there with you at Women of Faith! I went to

one in Chicago years ago, then again in Indianapolis a couple of years

later. By the second one I was having the hearing problems & I couldn't

stand the singing of thousands of women! That had been my favorite part

the first time, but now I don't just have hearing loss; it sounds like

I'm listening through broken speakers. It's tolerable for a cd or music

in church, but not in an arena!

your face. I'm bad at rubbing my eyes or nose, which is the favorite

port of entry for our germy friends. So even though you can't avoid

picking up some bugs in any public place, if you keep your hands away

from your face (if you're like me, you might have to sit on them or wear

mittens!) & wash your hands frequently, you will probably be all right.

As long as no one coughs or sneezes right in your face.

Terri, most infectious disease specialists don't

recommend routine use of the antibacterial soaps, because of the risk of more

drug resistance, but you really have to look to find the plain soap! The

main thing, and I'm sure you know this but the nonmedical folks may not, is to

wash well for at least 20 sec. It's surprising how long that actually

is! If you say the abc's or sing the abc song at a normal rate, that's

about right. In a public restroom, you might not want to sing it out

loud.

But I do keep Clorox wipes at home, because of all the kids & at least 2 of

them are MRSA carriers. You can use the wipes on the computer keyboard,

so about once a week or more often if someone's been snotting much, I wipe down

the mouse, keyboard, phones, light switches, doorknobs, etc. I think that

might be a good idea for you, with that low white count.

Rose,

That is what the doctor said (as far as not getting sick). I went ahead

and took the flu shot while I was there. Can I tell you what pissed me

off about it? I had the blood test on Sept 27. The panic value was

called to him on the 27 and do you think I got any phone call? No! I

went to my appointment on October 6th and had to ask the nurse to find

out my results.

I am having some terrible nausea and leg pain but I am not sure exactly

what may be the problem. Lyrica was causing a lot of stomach pain so I

had to stop that but I will try it again soon. But the nausea is still

here.

As far as washing my hands, I became a habitual hand washer when i

worked in OB/Gyn (MA). They are always dry too. I don't use anti

bacterial hadwash. Just good old fashion regular soap and washing the

correct way. I guess I probably should get some wipes for when I go

shopping and have to push a cart.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Rose, I saw this special on tv. (Especially when they showed that ultraviolet light (olr whatever iit was) on everything.Whenever I go to hotels, that's all I think of. I am afraid to even sit on the bedspread and yell at my husband & kids that do. I even worry about that second blanket on the bed too. The carpet makes me leary too , so I always wear my shoes, sandals or slippers. My family thinks I am "nutso" but that's all I can think about. I don't think I want to hear that story on restaurants, lol!DebbieRose wrote: Debbie, I even keep a big dispenser of hand cleaner on the computer desk, but

I used to be a housekeeper at a large motel. Be careful when you

check in and check everything. Bleach whipes are grate to take along

as well as lysol spray. I quit after a short time because I couldn't

get the establishment to help with the problem. The head housekeeper

keeps track of how many rooms you do by how much laundry you send

down the shoot. Some of the girls who always left early would take

clean sheets, roll them and step on them to make them look used. Yep

they would send them down the shoot and leave the dirty ones on the

bed. Argh. One time I found pubic hair between the sheets. I have

a real hard time staying in a motel now. When I do I take my own

sheets and towels. It is some extra work but I saw it all. I maybe

shouldn't have said anything to you all but it is sickening to think

of anyone else climbing into a bed that has just been " strightened "

and not remade. Hope this helps some of you because we do have to

watch our health issues. Good luck and stay healthy.

Debbie, I used to know somebody, not sure who it was but it might have been another midwife. Anyway, she took her own sheets, blankets, towels, etc. whenever she traveled. She'd strip that bed & put her own stuff on & leave a big note for the maid not to touch it! I don't think I'd go that far.
