One high school teacher raised money for by doing a "High Five for " with her class. She asked each kid to bring five dollars. Some parents sent in a five for them too. She might have given them extra credit or something but it was really great. You could start something like that in any big companies you know of or schools or anywhere really. Just 1100 people to give five bucks. I think people are willing to donate when they have a set amount thats not that high. You could always get the media to cover it too...but usually they want a trust account set up with a bank, so you would need to set that up first.

Got a call from the service dog place yesterday. They are working with a

couple of dogs for our son. We applied several months ago. We have raised

some money--about $500. This will help with travel. It should pay for the food

and car ride.

Now, any suggestions about raising the rest of the money in a couple of

months? We need about $6500 for the dog.

I'm curious on which place you are getting the service dog for your son. We

got a service dog through NEADS in Princeton, Ma. We only had to come up

with $500 for the dog. They find sponsors for the other amount. Neads also

has several places all over the united states. You should not have to come

up with that much money for a service dog. Getting a dog for my son was a

great decision, but I wouldn't of been able to do it if the cost was that

expensive.

Lori,

The place we chose for a service dog is a wonderful place. Most places

require more than we have to come up with. The cost of training a service dog

is about $20,000. This place is small and does not have a lot of outside

donors. They also place with children and don't require an adult's presence

for community access. We want a dog to give our son community access and

if he has to have a parent with him it kind of defeats the purpose. We have

also had to wait less than a year. We applied less than six months ago for an

alert dog--so our wait has been quite short.

The service dog place sounds great. My son was very fortunate in getting his

dog only after 6 months of applying. NEADS does not go by who's first on the

list, but which dog matches the client best. Like you my son is 16 and we

wanted him to be able to go in the community without an adult being the

facilitator. My son has so much more independence since the dog. Even in our

own home he does not rely on us to pick things up for him or turn the lights

on an off. I hope your son has as much success with his dog as my son has

had with his.
