Guest guest
Our son was born with bilateral clubfoot. He is 5 weeks old. He was in casts for 4 weeks. Our doctor said that he is fully abducted and does not appear to need the tentotomy. He has been in the FAB and straight last shoes for 3 days so far. We don't know if we have his feet in the shoes correctly. The bar does not fit well in the car seat and seems to come off when he is in it. We have tightened the shoes even more. He now has some dark pink spots/light red spots on the top of his feet. Is this normal? How tight should the shoes be? Is it more important to have the strap tight or the laces? At what point would you advise getting a second opinion? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Guest guest
Hello, sorry you're going through this. The spots are not a good sign. It could mean they are too tight, but then again they are coming off, hnmmm.. I think it's more important for the strap to be tight, especially when they start untieing the laces themselves you need the strap to keep the shoes in place. I would get a second opionion now, just for peace of mind. Hang in there, it will work out. Hugs, Jenn jones_reid wrote: Our son was born with bilateral clubfoot. He is 5 weeks old. Guest guest
My son is 2 and 5 months and he still has red marks on top of his feet. I have loosened the shoes off quite a lot, now he is older, but they are still there, but on the other hand they have never come off either. When he was little I took the tongues out and the red spots went for a while. I have only ever seen them get worse once and that was when my partner put them on and they were too tight - I just keep an eye on them now and make sure there is no blistering - you could try without the tongues to see if that helps. Guest guest
Hi, If you haven't already, take a look at FAB.doc posted under the Files section of the nosurgery4clubfoot home page ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/ ). It's full of tips for getting the shoes on properly and keeping them on (without developing sores). If those don't seem to work, you may want to consider getting a second opinion to make sure your son's feet are indeed fully corrected. If they aren't, they won't stay in the shoes. That said, my daughter's foot was fully corrected and stayed well down in the shoe. But the Markell shoes left her with persistent red marks, so we switched to the Ponseti/ FAB. Do you mind me asking which doctor you currently see? Someone in this group might be able to share their experience with that particular doctor and reassure you that you're getting the best possible treatment for your son. Hang in there, it will all work out! Kim Lily, 3/28/05, lcf, P/M FAB, 20 hours > Our son was born with bilateral clubfoot. He is 5 weeks old. He was > in casts for 4 weeks. Guest guest
We see Dr. in Grand Rapids. I would like to cut or drill a hole in the heel to actually see the heel. Anyone know how effective that is? I guess we probably didn't question the dr. enough. He didn't even do any measurements or anything, he just said that they had reached 70% and looked great... and didn't need a tenotomy either. new_kimberly wrote: Hi, If you haven't already, take a look at FAB.doc posted under the Files section of the nosurgery4clubfoot home page ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/ ). Guest guest
Kim, I understand you are using the Ponsetti/ brace. My sone , 11 weeks old, is currently in the Markell/DBB. He will not keep the shoes on. He too has suffreded from blisters, purple pinch marks, you name. He has sstrength in his legs forsure. He can work out of them in no time. Yes I have followed all the tips to the tee and Dr. Balsier in LR, Arkansas (Children's Hospital) has assured me we are corrected and that the Markell shoes don't work for everyone. We are considering the brace. How do you like the brace and are they easy to put on? Do you leave in Iowa and have you had any problems with the custom fit? Are you still on the original set of molds or have you had to purchase new molds? Sorry for all the questions but I just want to be well informed before making this purchase. , mom to (BL CF suppose to be 24/7 if we could keep them on) new_kimberly wrote: Hi, If you haven't already, take a look at FAB.doc posted under the Files section of the nosurgery4clubfoot home page ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/ ). Guest guest
nosurgery4clubfoot@... have read your postings. Hang in there. My understanding is there are Markell shoes that have the holes in the back of them and they can be ordered. We are having the same problem our son, who is 11 weeks old. It has been a nightmare and we know exactly what you are going thru. We are in Arkansas and are now considering the Brace after dealing since July 28th with the Markell and DBB and then also have a custom brace made that did not work either. My son hates the shoes and due to the strength in his legs and temper, he can pull right out of them or gets to a point where he hangs is foot in the shoe and then screams until we can get his foot fee. , mom to BL CF Markell/DBB 24/7 if he would stay in them. ones_reid@...> wrote: We see Dr. in Grand Rapids. It can't hurt, always sheds some light and often helps. Do it now. Use a very sharp knife, such as an exacto or a good box knife. I don't know how it'd go with a drill lol. Might be messy. Guest guest
I know how you feel!!!! My little , aka " hysterical baby " , now oohs and ahhs with her shoes on! She developed a terrible blister from trying to get her shoes off and being unable to (I had them on too tight). Try to prevent that from happening. From my experience, I have found that letting her kick out of them until she adjusted to the shoes was better than her developing another blister. She is now blister free and happy! Do take a look at the tips document - it helped me tremendously. I did not drill a hole in the heel, but I did mark at the top of the shoe where the end of her foot should be. Then, when she got hysterical I found that it was because her foot had slipped some, but not all the way out. That's where it hurt her. Then I knew to just take the shoe off and start over. I really had the Markell's down pat and they were so easy (knotted laces helps lol!) to put on. the s I find are difficult to cinch up without causing wrinkles, so it takes longer to get them on. Also, if I put the straps all the way through the buckles I'd spend hours getting them off lol. So I let them flap to the wind. Other than that, I do like them very much. One of the best parts is that they're flat on the bottom, thus no rolling front to back when they're standing on those bolts on the other bars. >Do you leave in Iowa and have you had any problems with the custom fit? Not quite sure I understand the question, but they're custom fitted, not custom molded. So there's a molded standard size available, different widths I think too. But has you press your child's foot into a foam impression kit (basically pink florist's foam in a special foot imprint box) so that he knows he's getting you exactly the right shoe for your child. He keeps the impression kit, and when you need new shoes he sends you a new one. > Are you still on the original set of molds or have you had to > purchase new molds? like above, there isn't a mold made but just a pressed impression of the foot. that is included in the cost of the shoes, including shipping of the kit to you. Guest guest
I guess my biggest concern is that the brace, will my son be able to get out of it? We can spend countless time making sure his heel is secure in the Markell and in an hour or so his foot is out of one of them. I guess I was wondering how often you were replacing the molds. Does leave room for some growth as the Markell shoes do. We seem to have room for him to grow a little bit. Where do you leave? I guess another concern is we live so far away and is in Iowa if we have problems. Thanks, frogabog wrote: I totally didn't reply to the questions at hand. Sorry! Guest guest
Kori, Yes I have pics. I will attach for you in a seperate email. When we place in foot into the Markell's we make sure his foot is secure in the shoe. Meaning that we place his toes to the front of shoe, knee bent and foot flexed up and buckle the shoe so tight that we have almost torn through the stap getting it buckled and then tie as tight as we can. Within a matter of time less than 1 hr we notice his foot has slipped back and up in the shoe. The model of the Markell used currently is 1644, 000 M in size. He is just getting little pinch marks on the skin from the side of foot to big toe. And then his heels are looking pinched and red when the shoes come off. I have started using the Tucks pads to help toughen his skin as well. Using socks with grips, I have enven doubled socked, removed the bar when putting on his shoes, you name. Dr. Blasier has told me that we are corrected. We even placed the right foot back in a cast last week to get it back to the correct degree and flexible. On the 28th of July, after the 6 casting and heel cord release procedure and casting we went into the DBB and Markell. After 3 weeks of nightmare, the orthotist suggested trying another type of brace that had been used before. Picture attached for that as well. This brace was placed on each leg individually but caused much pain for when putting it on. The shoes would stay on but his foot would not stay sitted in the Markell shoes using the brace and then he would cry b/c his foot was pinched in this brace as well. So that is when we went back to Dr. Blasier and talked about the P/M brace. I belive you have talked with his nurse Chandler at Arkansas Children's Hosp. via email. She had the tip sheets that you had put together and revised back in May I belive. I feel totally confident in my doctor but I feel as though kids are treated under a genric method when it comes to shoes. In my opinon, not all kids fit the same build. I'm not looking for an easy way out just something that will stay on his feet properly. I am willing to pay whatever to make his life and ours a bit easier. I feel like I am loosing this battle and do not want him to relaspe in any way. frogabog wrote: At 06:11 PM 9/10/2005, frogabog wrote: >, > >Before you go much further with the purchase of the PM's, I want to >explore a little into why is not tolerating the shoes. > >Are YOU sure his feet are corrected? Guest guest
Hi- With my son (15 months old), he works his legs back and forth, flexing and pointing his toes to get himself out of the shoes. He only actually gets the non-clubfoot out of the shoes becasue he has more flexibility. He has light pink-red marks on the tops of his feet every morning that settle down by days end. What I do is... I put the shoes on with the straps on a tighter setting until he falls asleep at which time I loosen them to the proper setting to keep him from intentionally pulling his feet/foot out. Also, I put a bandaid on the tops of each foot directly under wear the strap goes if I see a bit too much redness. Usually the redness comes from him working his feet back and forth. This really seems to help. Good luck! Stacie Rach wrote: My son is 2 and 5 months and he still has red marks on top of his feet. Rach -- Re: help please ASAP Hello, sorry you're going through this. Thank you!
