Guest guest
Hi, I just recently started methylprednisone and was experience some bad side effects such as headaches, stomach swelling and pain after taking medication. It made my menstual cyle irregular and I stopped taking it for a few days. It clear up some and my doctor told me to take it every other day. I just started yesterday but I did feel a little better. While I was off the medication my cough started to come back yesterday so I guess it was helping that. I was put on it due to what my chest xrays showed and to get my breathing level up to noraml. I think my doctor is a little afraid to give me regular prednisone becasue he said that one of his patience developed diabetes while on it. He seemed like he felt really bad about that. Is there anything that you can do to prevent diabetes while on prednsione? I have been on it for quite some time throughtout this condition. I don't want to develop this while trying to up my breathing. Any special diets I should follow? Other than that I feel ok now. I am not sleeping throughout the day. The prednisone does give me energy and makes me eat more. Any suggestions? Shauna from Atl.

Guest guest
Shauna - Sorry to hear of your complications. Methylprednisilone and prednisone both have the same effect on blood sugar, so one is not better than the other in avoiding diabetes. I have been taking methylprednisilone for 4 years now, and have issues with my blood sugar. I've recently started taking metformin to counteract the effects of the steroids on my blood sugar. There's no special or magic way to avoid diabetes. You need to follow the same advice given to anyone predisposed to diabetes: keep your weight down, exercise and control carbohydrates in your diet. The American Diabetes Association has lots of information on a good course to follow. I assume you're getting your blood tested regularly by your doctor, yes? Good luck to you. Guest guest
Thanks, Jim. I was going to point out the similarity of the two drugs, but you did such a great job I don't have anything to add. Well, except Shauna might want to find another doctor, since this one doesn't seem too well informed. Ramblin' RoseModerator A merry heart is good medicine. Guest guest
I was looking thru the emails and had seen where someone was stopping their prednisone without tapering off it. DO NOT DO THIS!! YOU WILL PUT YOURSELF INTO ADRENAL CRISIS. Prednisone and Methyprednisolone-- both require a slow--SLOW,, taper. When you take steroids-- your body (adrenals) stop producing cortisol. This is our bodies regulator for heart beats, body temperature, and pain control. You have to RETRAIN your adrenals to produce cortisol. I've done many posts on this issue, and if you search the ARCHIVES with prednisone-- I'm sure you'll get more info than you wanted! Take care, and wean yourself off the steroids ONLY with the help of your MD. Sincerely, Tracie NS Co-owner/moderatorSee what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage.
