Why Splenda over sugar?

Im just curious... doesnt eat alot of sugar persey (far less

than the vast majority of children his age) but i havent made any

major effort to cut back on what he does eat...

I have found a recipe for muffins with raisins and an entire orange

(peel and all) that uses a very small amount of sugar that he

actually loves, and i know it tends to keep his levels up longer

than most snacks... he also likes things like triscuts and corn

chips... he loves goldfish, and other crackers, but i hate to let

him eat too many of the saltier crackers...

I learned alot that I was doing wrong when we went to a diatician about Gracies diet she explained that hypoglycemics should actually follow a diabetics diet. While we encourage the complex carbs (such as fiber, nuts ect.) they need to avoid the pure sugar. The sugar will bring up the blood sugar really quick, but eventually will drop off and crash, making the blood sugar even lower than what it was to begin with. In the past I was carrying packs of Smarties along with me to give her when she shaked, although it did work quickly I found I was doing it all the time. Now we encourage the peanut butter and complex carbs, and find they have much longer lasting effects.

Splenda is just like Sweet and Low and other artificial sweeteners, only it mixes (and tastes) like sugar. If you use the Splenda in baking the kid can still enjoy the sweets without having to worry about a sugar crash later. It does have to be in moderation because many recipies have brown sugar in them, so there is some sugar but not nearly as much. They are also now making alot of candy for diabetics, using Splenda. I have found Herseys makes practically everything in a "diabetic" version. The chocolate may not be to great for you son, if he can't do the milk but maybe one day he will be able to.

Best wishes
