Hello Everyone....I've been talking to Shell( who just happens to be

a good friend of mine) about the surgery from time to time and and

dealing with all the pros and cons. It wasn't until a few months ago

that I really considered doing the gastic bypass.

I've been told by my doctor and nutritionist my BMI is boarder

line and I'm healthy with no " other " medical conditions.I've done

all the test, and blood work. I am taking a sleep apnea test in Feb

as a last test to see if they can find anything wrong with me...

funny how you need to qualify by being over weight, and or something

else medically wrong with you. But I'm still obease. It frustrates

me because all my life I've struggled through this as everyone has

in here.. and here is a big chance to get control of it and I still

may not be able to.

My nutritionist says she doesn't really think I'll qualify, as I

have never had problems sleeping before. she told me if I want to

garentee(sp?( sorry really bad speller here) it I can gain a few

more pounds. I told her that was crazy since the goal is to lose

weight, and she agreeed.

I'm still going to go through all the steps and make my decision at

the very end. I've been going through the pro's and con's from the

research I've done, been told from others who've had it and from my

own doctors.

My main concerns are.. the pain afterwords, the food intake that

I can and can not have, hairloss and the extra skin after the wieght

loss. I just watched Oprah who had a woman on there and the pain she

was having from the extra skin. It's not covered in my insurance to

have it removed.

I've made an appointment with my nutritionist to set up a plan for

me no matter if I go through it or not. If for some reason I don't

qualify then I NEED to do something NOW, and if i do, I still have

to lose 10% so it doesn't hurt either way.

I really go back and forth on the whole procedure...if you can lose

the 10% why not just keep going? Yes I know most of us were/are very

unhealthy, miserable, unhappy, depressed ect and that's the reason

why we(I am) thinking of having this procedure done. BUT are we

doing it from the wrong reason. Is it a quick fix? Isi t really

worth it? DO they(Kaiser) really prepare you for the post opt?

I'm reading though all the thousands of post , so I'm sure most of

my questions or concerns will be touched on but please feel free to

respond.

Back and forth,

Amy

Hi AMY

First off Welcome.

Second, this is a great group and Im sure everyone will give you

awesome advice and support.

I had my surgery on 08/19/03 and dropped to 150. I would do it again

in a heart beat. About the 10%....first its a time to get used to

the way you will have to eat for the rest of your life. Its

basically to see if you are committed. Its a time to learn all you

can and hopefully work on whats eating you. Secondly, most of us

could lose a significant amount of weight on our own but wound up

giving up before we reached goal and gained it all back or couldnt

get past a certain point. Ive always said that losing weight on our

own was like trying to climb a mountain without a rope, you can get

to a certain point and then you slide down. WLS is the rope, its the

tool to get you over the hump. Its a second chance to do it right.

Kaiser does offer alot of pre and post op support. Groups like this

and in person ones help tremendously.

Pain isnt that bad. I was back to work in four weeks and I had open

not lap. Hairloss isnt that much....I havent seen anyone go bald or

even have bald spots.

My removal of stomach skin was covered for medical reasons, I paid

for my arms.

Hope this helps. Stick with us....we will help you in any way we

can!!

Hi .... thanks for the response. Shell told me what wonderful

people there are in here, so I can't wait to hear all the stories.

Thanks for the info. I've heard the hair loss varies so that's good

news. So far I'm reading Shell's post and it seems like she had a hard

time at first... is that normal.

Amy,

is so right, my situation was very different then most, most

of us go in have surgery and are home in a day or two. My 3 hour

surgery turned into 6 hours, I did have comlications that most

people don't, Ramona had surgery around the sametime and she healed

much faster then I.

By the way WELCOME TO THE GROUP!!! Amy girl ,you know I love you and

support you in any decisson you choose.

I would also like to welcome all the new members, I'm so glad you

found us. I have not been around much ,but Ramona and are

wonderful at keeping this group on track. Thanks Ladys
