Guest guest
Hi all, I've been here lurking in the background absorbing any and all information available. I find myself with a couple of questions now that I have had my bpd/ds surgery. First and foremost, does anyone else out there suffer from depression or manic- depression. I have the latter. I know they warn all patients that any type of major surgery can led to temporary depression. Well, if the ailment is along those lines (like seasonal depression)---I get it. I think I'm the walking poster child. More that anything I think this relapse into depression was in part caused by the surgery and my not being on my regular meds for about 7 days (which is forever). My question is, has anyone else experienced any form of depression after surgery and if so how long. It really affects my ability to concentrate and function normally. I am out exactly 3 weeks today. I think I should be pretty much back to normal by the end of another week but wanted to check in with others! Thanks! Another thing, like I said, I only had my surgery 3 weeks ago. I have a hard time taking my regular meeds with my supplements and keeping them down (and I do mean without throwing up some of the liquid and a couple of the pills I've taken)---and I find myself giving up and not taking all of them. Is this because my stomach is still swollen? I find eating much of anything hard too. I have maybe 1/4 cup for about 3 or 4 small bites and a small sip or two. I don't see how I'm ever going to get down my meds, supplements, food and 50+ ML of water----plus all that protein! Can someone help? When will I be able to eat more? I'll be grateful for any help anyone can offer! Tammy Feeling great otherwise! No complications (except the depression)! Dr's. Guest guest
Tammi, The most important thing right now is your liquids. Then work on your meds (also very important). After that take bites of high protein items every few minutes. My opinion is that early on it is too difficult to try to eat " meals " . Instead set out a protein item such as a slice of cheese and 3 saltine crackers. Take a bite each time you walk by it. (I put it on my counter) Then when that is gone set out something else like 1/4 cup of tuna salad. Take bites of this also until it is gone. If you are not already, try to intially get about 5 servings of things like this in a day. After you have done that then up it to 6 and so forth. This is my method of " eating through " that inital eating difficultly and sometimes the nausea that comes with it. I think it will help you feel better. Of course, I am not a doctor but I have friends that this has worked on. There is little to no late regain with the BPD/DS. Guest guest
Tammy, I, too, am on meds for depression (Wellbutrin) with the addition of Paxil come winter. I'm 4 weeks post-op and would say that the first 3 weeks were pretty down for me (some say the longer you're under anesthesia, the longer the anesthesia-induced depression lasts). Within a week, I went back on the Wellbutrin and I think it's finally starting to kick in: I started cleaning out the garage today (been planning THAT for 4 YEARS!LOL). As to swallowing the pills, that will get easier as your stomach heals. Check with your pharmacist as to which meds can be crushed or cut in half (got a handy-dandy little pill cutter/crusher at the drug store, but don't need it anymore.) Also, if you're still taking Tylenol for pain, it comes in liquid form, so that's one thing you don't have to swallow whole. Hang in there. I'll be thinking of you and hoping you climb out of the basement soon! Guest guest
I have always had a problem with pills. Usually I ask the doctor if the pills can be crushed. If they permit you to cursh them then crush them between two tablespoons. Then fill the tablespoon the rest of the way up with you favorite beverage. You can then swallow the crushed pill with only a tablespoon of liquid. You might also ask your doctor if the medication can be prescribed in a liquid form. Somtimes medications come in a liquid form for children you just have to take more of it as an adult. All of my vitamins and calcium witht he exception of iron and Actigall are chewable this makes it a lot easier on me. I have experienced what you describe the overfull feeling after taking supplements and I find that it almost always happens when I am running behind and need to cram in a bunch of meds and supplements at the end of the day. I try not to run behind any more but when I am I eat half of what I think I can hold then take my supplements then I eat the rest of my meal until full. It helps cut down on the overfull feeling you get after eating and then putting liquids and meds on top. There are several other posts on placinig 4 ounce portion out and slowly eating them you may only be able to eat a couple of ounces eating a couple of ounces every hour or so will help keep you nourished. Don't force yourself to eat a complete 4 ounce portion. Eat a couple of bites, come back and a eat a few more you will be able to finish the serving in 2 to 3 sessions and you will feel better. > Hi all, > I've been here lurking in the background absorbing any and all information > available.
