Guest guest
HI, Seems we do a lot of " bathroom talk " on this list. LOL I'm not sure if I can answer you. I didn't have true diarrhea for that long. Only for about 2 weeks. As soon as I started eating real food, my BM's started getting firmer. The only times I had cramps was when I ate something that didn't agree with me. Like I found I was Lactose intolerant at the beginning (no more problem after 3 months). If I ate the smallest amount of cheese or milk, a few hours later I got painful cramping until I had a BM and it was usually very diarrhea-like. This also happened on occasion when I tried new foods. Just kept away from those foods and everything was fine. Does yours happen all the time or only occasionally? Look at what your eating. Rita I know that diarhea is the norm(at this early stage I almost 7 weeks out) after the DS does anyone else get it preceded by painful cramps? I know that I shouldnt bitch and complain b/c other people on this list have serious problems. Its just that its very painful cramps and I was wondering if it would be like this forever. The cramps dissapear once I have had a bm and do not last very long. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Guest guest
You can test and see if it is related to lactose intolerance by buying an over-the-counter bottle of lactase enzyme 'milk pills' at Walmart or wherever. Take them every time food goes in your mouth (they put lactose in ALL sorts of things....) for a couple of days and see if it goes away. Greg These pills are fairly cheap, are a natural enzyme (not a drug), and taste a little better than chalk You could try the same tests with Beano. Back in the day I had terrible runs and gas. I couldn't figure out why. I finally figured out it happened an hour or 2 after I drank a SlimFast (aka liquid lactose). I tried a couple of milk pills before drinking it, and voila, no more gas. Note that I ate other dairy products normally.

Guest guest
Lisbeth, are you taking gas pills on a regular basis? Even though the cramps only come before a BM, this may help to control getting the gas before your BMs.

I believe this is probably caused by eating your favorite chocolate icecream and cake breakfast. I suggest you get one of those " cushioned " seats for your throne. Dan > > Yes. Guest guest
Thanks Greg I will definitely look into the lactase enzyme pills. I have been eating cheese so maybe that is the culprit. I have stayed away from milk because I tried milk earlier on and that gave me some SERIOUS GAS. But seriously I dont think its gluten because I have cut bread out because I thought it might be the culprit, as Greg mentioned before I think it may be lactose because I eat cheese, I stopped drinking milk so I am guessing it has to be cheese. Guest guest
I am so embarrased, I can not believe I am discussing this but here goes. The cramps are a precursor to a bm. So I know that I need to go to the bathroom because I get the painfull cramps. Once I am done its all over and thats it until the next time I have to go. I have a bm 2x a day each preceded with the cramps. I really would like to get down to 1x a day. I guess I will call my surgeons office and see what his recommends. BTW Rita have you gone to the new office yet? Lisbeth Dr. Macura June 25, 2001 BMI 36 " Rita B. " wrote: HI, Seems we do a lot of " bathroom talk " on this list. LOL I'm not sure if I can answer you. Two things: first of all, several people have written to this list that the lactose in milk gets converted to simpler sugars as the milk is made into yogurt or cheese. So, it is not very likely that your culprit is cheese. But, try going without for a few days just to check out the theory. Second: you can buy pills containing lactase enzyme that you take just as you begin to ingest a dairy product. A brand name is Lactaid, which also comes in a flavored chewable form. But, cheaper versions are available under house brand names in big drug chains or Walmarts. Also, Dairy Care contains both lactase and acidophilus* bacteria (the good bacteria that you need in your gut), though it is far cheaper to buy each separately as house brands. So, if cheese turns out to be your culprit, just take some lactase before eating the cheese. It's that simple. >So I am going to try and find another snack instead. The DS and its aftermath, in its basest of terms, is gruesome enough if we dwell on the [temporary] downside and lose sight of where we are all headed and why. I am Pre-op and have learned about LACTOSE intolerance! I understand it occurs post op in some people as well. You may want to see if the cramping follows an hour after eating dairy. > > I feel like Don King right now Only on the DS list would I ask this question here goes: > I know that diarhea is the norm(at this early stage I almost 7 weeks out) after the DS does anyone else get it preceded by painful cramps? Guest guest
Hey Danine, I went and bought some Lactaid. I took them this morning when I had some eggs. I am hoping that the Lactaid will take care of the cramping. Once I have a bm the cramping is gone so I am guessing its the food. I will definitely check at the time of the cramps though. Guest guest
I had SEVERE cramping at weeks 6-8. The oain was as bad as recovery for me. I couldn't work for 2 of the days it was so bad. This is what I tried: Cutting out fat, dairy, gluten (bread products). Then I introduced them back in one at a time. I think it was the gluten since every now and then I still get a cramp when i eat a bite of a bagel. Many people become gluten intolerant. Crackers are OK because they do not have too much gluten, as is crust from rolls. I also ate beano with every meal and ate 2 gas x with every meal AND I started taking lactobacillus/acidophillus (live flora). At the time I took 2 between meals. Now at almost 19 weeks post-op, I take one a day at breakfast and I no longer take the beano or gas x. I dont know if any of this helped me or if my system just rode it out. These were the only complications I had once out of the hospital. It was painful as hell though and it was the only time i actually said, " what did I do to myself " I would not have been able to deal with it for much longer. Thank God it passed. Hopefully for you it will pass too. Good Luck! JILL K in NY 4/5/01 Gagner -90 forever!!!
