Guest guest
I recall in a meeting for south san francisco patients Gitty ( dr baxter) had come back from a trip in her native country i think it was Iran but i cant recall, anyways she said that they have been doing lapbands there and they were not as successfull because the patients dont learn the eating changes in their lifestyle and that patients tend to gain the weight back infact one of them i think was a cousian of hers that that happened to, thats all i know about the lapband................. but i heard that kaiser is going to start doing them, i think the advantage might be you absorb your vitamins better in the foods you eat when you have a lapband, good luck brenda in your research colleen Diane Duenas wrote: I'm posting this to all the groups I belong to.I had RNY on 08/19/03,went from 315 to 150, and now 164 as most of you know. I feel it has been very successful even though I have had a regain which Im working on. I have had no complications and it has been the best thing I have ever done.My question is this. My 24 year old son has severe acid reflux that has eroded his esophagus and caused polyps. No cancer detected. However, he weighs 300 pounds and also has two hernias. His doctor initially wanted to do RNY and now has decided that lapband would be the better choice. Is that true? Can anyone tell me anything about the lapband? If its not better and his insurance covers both what are his options to choose? Thanks and Huggles--- End forwarded message --- Colleen
Guest guest
Well one of the things I would ask your son's dr is why he feels lapband is a better alternative for your son then the RNY. Another thing I would do, is just research them on your own, and then you can make the decision. Lapband is reverseable - can be undone, I know that much. How old is you son? Guest guest
Also I think lapband might be a suggestion because he's young, and lapband can be reversed. Also maybe has to do with the surgery needs for RNY are greater then lapband, not as many risks with lapband. Guest guest
I don't know much if anything about the Lapband except that for some people it does not work. As Colleen stated about the food changes/lifestyle. I know a few people that had it and the band actually broke and they did not know it until they had started gaining a lot of weight. I believe that is just one of the big down falls with this type of procedure. Whatever he gets, I am sure that it might be just a little easier than with most because you have gone through a weight loss surgery and can really support his efforts. I wish him well with finding a procedure that he can do and be successful at.
