Guest guest
My son is 13 months today! and we are looking at the whole shoe thing as well. I too am a huge proponent of barefeet/socked feet however with winter fast approaching and the soon to graduate out of the infant room. will be needing shoes. I know our doctor told us that what we needed to look for were soft soles, flexible shoes, that offer some support. Our son is also very flat footed. For the parents of older kids-can you help us out?? I have some hand me down shoes that are working well so far-but I would really like to know what good brands are out there that don't cost an arm and a leg! I have checked out stride rite and preschoolians but am hoping you have a secret shoe source that sells great pre walkers/walkers but don't break the bank. Please let us know! Guest guest
Kathleen, Don't laugh but payless. They are cheap, have a nice arch and support up to the ankle but not over it if you don't want that. Our PT recommended them as we needed to buy two different sizes and this is the cheap way to do that. Also, they aren't the greatest as far as workmanship but kids feet grow so fast that you don't have to worry. You can also get several styles and it is still in your budget! Don't get me wrong - we have several soft soled shoes (LOVE THEM!) and a few preschoolians and pedoodles but I also have a few payless ones. Chris Re: first pair of walking shoes-second that!! Guest guest
Thanks for the tidbit. I didn't event think about it from that perspective. Right now, the only ones he is wearing second hand are like " slippers " -they provide protection more than anything. I am going to check out walmart and payless! His feet are so teeny-I hope we are able to find shoes that fit. He's in a 1 right now in markells-his toes on feet are stunted so that extra length they provide-he lacks. Thanks again! kathleen > > Our son was born with bcf on 9/9/04. He's now at the point where he > > wears them at night and during naps, but he's at daycare during the > > day. Guest guest
Chris- I would never laugh-payless was one of the first places I looked at as well as Target/walmart/meijer. I just wanted to make sure I was looking at the right type of shoe. Glad to hear those places have it! My doctor told me to look at cheap shoes since their feet grow so quickly! I have some online shopping/research to do now! kathleen > > Our son was born with bcf on 9/9/04. Guest guest
Thanks everyone. That definitely was a help. When I went to buy a pair of shoes the other day, I ran into a woman who was adamant on what type of shoe he could wear. In fact, she started to question what size markell he should be in. It was completely overwhelming and frustrating because although she had been in the foot business FOREVER, I still trust my ortho dr over her. Needless to say, I walked out without a pair of shoes. Now I can do what I want and what I believe is best for my son. Once again, you have all been a huge help. I don't post nearly as often as everyone else, but you you have always been so gracious in helping the rookie!! > > > Our son was born with bcf on 9/9/04. Guest guest
I used to get shoes from Payless Shoes - which I understand only the Shopko stores now sell - that were simple high top white leather with a flexible sole and laces. Guest guest
I've been told this before about second hands shoes too, ee. Bums me out because we saved all of Lily's older sister's shoes and have the same style in a whole range of sizes (which would have helped with the different size foot issue since Lily is unilateral lcf). But I guess I'll have to resist the temptation to use them when Lily gets to that point (a while from now; she turns 6 months today). Kim > > Our son was born with bcf on 9/9/04. Guest guest
Kathleen, Many of the shoes from Target are actually made by Stride Rite so are similar in look/quality. You might look there as well. Kelsey has some difficulty with regular shoes but she is currently wearing a pair of Nike tennis shoes with a flatter construction (no high arch). These were only $19.99 on sale at Foot locker and they work well. Also, for the softer shoes, we love pedoodles (www.pedoodles.com). These are also cheaper than the Preschoolian shoes. The run about $25-30 but these work GREAT on Kelsey's feet. Guest guest
I know I am joining this topic a bit late... My son's Dr. gave us Daytime shoes. He wrote a prescription for it and the same company that made our son's FAB made the daytime shoes. They are kind of like those older stride right boots. They even gave me a color choice. The shoes look almost identical to each other, there is no real arch. Our Dr. told us not to put him in store bought shoes until later (he's 15 months). The company that makes his FAB is O & P Motion in Canoga Park, California. I will call and ask what their technical name is. But maybe asking your Dr. about these would be good and fully covered by insurance. Stacie mfolkemer_1999 wrote: Thanks everyone. That definitely was a help. Guest guest
Kathleen-- I hear where you're coming from!! I had to buy Ava 2 pairs, her feet are at least 1 size different, and I got slightly obsessed...hehehe I must have gone to 10 different stores, and spent hours online researching. I ended up getting her preschoolians, but NOT from their site--I got them on ebay--their old styles. Not my favorite looking shoe, but once I got them I LOVE them. I'm a big " barefoot is best " person, too, and these shoes are great. They're like sneakers, but you can literally roll them in a ball. So if you're willing to sacrifice a little in the style dept., I would totally check on Ebay--both pairs with shipping cost me about $20...something like $6 plus $4 shipping, can't remember exactly. I really can't say enough about the Preschoolians, and at $20 it was cheaper than 2 pairs at Payless, even.
