Re: Calf: Is it going to be very noticeable that muscle/leg is thinner as he grows?

Sally,

The variance in the size of the calf can vary greatly-

unfortunately, you're just going to have to wait until he's older to

see how much difference there actually will be. I, too, have a

unilateral child. Her calf difference is noticeable to me- but not

to others at this point. She's 5 now. I worry about her having

self-image issues with having two different sized calves as a teen

and young-woman, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there! I'm

not worried about her not performing as well athletically, though,

she's just as fast as the other kids.

The smaller muscle won't be able to be " bulked up " , according to Dr.

Ponseti as the muscle tissue is genetically different than normal

muscle.

If you want, you can see pictures of my daughter's legs at my yahoo

album. The link is in the links section of this group's website

under T's photos. Or look at the photo gallery at our website

which I'll post below and there is a link there too.

I can't give you any reassurance about how your son's leg will look,

but I *can* assure you that it will work just fine...and in the end,

that's what matters most.

Hugs to you- I know how it's just one more thing for us moms to

worry about! :)

I worried about this too. My son is LCF. He is 3 1/2 and I notice a

slight difference because I know to look for it, but NO ONE else

does. Not even my husband. I never told my husband that there was a

possability of this because I thought he would stress too much. My

doc said that after they thin out their calfs will pretty much stay

the same from then on out. So if they are really noticeable it will

stay really noticeable if it is slight it will stay slight.

It really varies for different kids, I think. My daughter is 6 1/2, and I can

see a noticeable difference in her calf size. She was born with a left

clubfoot. Dr. Ponseti has remarked on her calf atrophy. It really isn't

noticeable to anybody else, though! I don't think I've ever had anyone remark

on calf difference other than my mother.

Oh, yes, I worry about the teen years. They'll always find something, though,

y'know?

Here's a link to some pictures of Rose's legs. None of them are particulary

good, though! I have more recent ones, but I don't have them on the computer

yet. This will give you a slight idea, though.
