Guest guest
That will be an interesting study ! LOL! It appears to me that 2nd Hand has become Big Business and I'm not always sure you save any on a constant basis. I buy very little clothing, new or used. I take good care of what they have by using Spray N Wash a lot and stuff like that. Evy got new shirts for his bday last week, but it's been 9 months (christmas) since he got new cloths. s. Re: : first pair of walking shoes-second that!! -- veering OT I second that about MIL's giving you junk! My in laws were over on Saturday for Sammy's birthday and they came with this god awful lamp! I think it came from their own basement but it is ugly and the shade is all stained and dirty - like they think we're going to use it! Actually, it is my FIL who does this kind of thing the most. Wanted to give us this old rusty bike they had from the 70's for Jenna! My MIL is the one who gives us other kinds of crap, like ziplock bags full of little hotel soaps and oh, my mom does it too, newspaper clippings of stuff she thought we would be interested in -- don't they know we have enough junk! Okay, anyway I digress, I was going to ask for those of you who have really delved into buying your kids clothes used and selling stuff to re-sell it shops, etc, could anyone give me any advice or facts and figures on how much you think you save by doing this? DH has a real problem w/ the kids wearing used stuff (he thinks they will get cooties or something) and I am wanting to get some actual numbers together on how much we could save by buying a majority of their clothes this way. Guest guest
, I can't even begin to calculate how much we save by buying second hand. In our area we have fall and spring " preschool PTA sales " which are just huge garage sales where tons of Moms can sell anything baby/maternity up to youth size 18. Brand name, well cared for clothing goes for a few dollars an outfit. I'm talking gymboree, gap, jack and jill, jillian and such. My son reading this as I type said " Don't forget Old Navy Mom! I love Old Navy things!!! " so there you go. LOL So I get to clothe my kids well cheaply. Can't beat that. When my boys outgrew their stuff I'd periodically 'rent' a table at one of the events and sell it off. It is harder to find things for their size now but I never turn down a bargain. LOL My daughter has a wardrobe I'd never be able to afford otherwise and I'll turn it all around someday for cash in hand. I buy ahead at sales as well. For instance Dillards and Kohls have been having clearance sales on summer things so I go buy the new items for all of the kids at 75% and 80% off for the next year. The other day I found denim levi shorts for my oldest son for $4 at Walmart. I picked up a few. Last week I purchased my daughters easter dress and several really cute summer outfits at Dillards. Got 7 oufits, the dress and a shirt for $20. I also picked up some things for one of the boys for just a few bucks as well. I never pay full price and rarely buy it at the beginning of the season sales. My kids know that we're only going in the store to find the clearance racks and they are learning the power of bargain shopping! I could go on. But tell your hubby that washing machines were made for a reason and if you shop well you can save a bundle at second hand sales!!! Guest guest
I have a friend who hands down all of her girls clothes to us. I am thankful for the gesture but they are always stained and in pretty rough shape. I just take what I can use and donate the rest. I buy some of the girls things new and some used. I have found, at least around here, that you have to really know what you are paying for because sometimes used prices are not that great of a deal. I have gotten a lot of Baby Gap, Gymboree, Old Navy things from a local consignment shop and pay considerably less for those than I would at those store but they may still want $10 for a pair of those jeans so is it worth it when I can get the same item, not same brand, new elsewhere for the same price. I have really become more of a sale/clearance sale watcher. Many places, like Target, JC Penney, Kohls will put clothes on clearance while they are still in season. Yesterday, I went to the consignment store and bought a winter coat for . It is an Old Navy with matching hat and gloves and I only paid $15 which is less than a new coat at Walmart. It is in great shape and will be a great coat for this winter. For me, it has just come down to being good at comparisons and looking for the best deals wherever they come. Guest guest
, I really believe you can save lots!! We are not that lucky to get handy me down clothes and my MIL does not really send my daughter much of anything I buy ALL her clothes! In the begining i really did splurge on her b/c she was my 1st and only daughter and well cause she is a girl!! Too many cute things!! But, she quickly grew out of them so I started taking her clothes to a consigment shop but then I did not feel I was getting enough for what her clothes was worth so I started selling her clothes on EBAY. It has worked out great! With all the $$ I make from selling her clothes I buy her new clothes and shoes. It's kinda like a cycle, and I really have done great. I have also bought her clothes at consignment shops and on EBAY. Everything I have purchased has been in great preworn condition(no cooties etc.). At a consignment store you can actually look at the clothes rather than on EBAY you look at pictures but I have not yet bought anything that was not as described. When I sold my daughters clothes I made bout $350.00+ and bought her lots of her winter cloths with that money. To me the resale shops are getting a little pricey and I have found a lot of good sales especially at Baby Gap. I think you just gotta look around for those good deals. Me and my SIL usually buy the clearance items for the following season. Dillard's had a huge sale a couple of weeks ago and I bought lots of clothes for my son for next year. I'm talking tanks for 1.99, basketball top and shorts for 2.99,3.99 and Levi denim shorts for 5.00! Can't beat that! This past week we went to Target and all the backpacks were for 3.00! So i stocked up for next year! So sometimes it is cheaper to buy new than used! and BL CF 12/16/03 wrote: I second that about MIL's giving you junk! Guest guest
That's my problem with new cloths, kids out grow them so fast! I'll say one thing I will NOT buy 2nd hand is underwear! LOL! But there are tons of good bargains to be had 2nd hand and cooties is not a concern to me - I mean if it looks too gross to pick up and buy obviously don't buy it but other wise I think there's little a solid washer won't cure. s. Re: : first pair of walking shoes-second that!! -- veering OT Thanks for the input. I can at least tell him " see, all these people do it! " I do bargain shop and try to pick up things from the end of the season sales that they can wear next year but I have been having a hard time with Sammy because he is growing so fast, by next summer he could be in a 2T! Guest guest
I'm so happy my mother finally quit bringing the kids Dollar Store toys - you know that $1 pure crap kind of toy that falls apart in a day and leaves pieces all over the house....and battery toys. I don't buy battery toys (except our Leap Pad), if she does she has to replace the batteries herself! LOL! She finally caught on and stopped buying those things. s. Re: : first pair of walking shoes-second that!! -- veering OT Hey , hehe I can totally relate, I had to tell my mom that I was just going to have to start throwing out the stuff she kept sending (after asking her about 50 times not to send knick knacks - junk). It was hard to do but it has helped. But baggies of little hotel soaps hehehehe, that is bad, what do you say to that LOL ) As to your query regarding second hand clothes, I DO definately buy used clothes. There are a few really nice consignment shops in our area - many I would not venture into - but the nice ones have strict requirements regarding what they will and will not take. I buy the majority of Graces clothes, the everyday stuff new (and almost always on sale) but for some of the name brand stuff and fancy velvet dresses etc, consignment is great! When you think about it, most of those clothes have been worn just a number of times, esp if it is a fancy outfit. I was looking for a velvet dress for Christmas pics and new they were $80 to $100 for a nice one, I got a beautiful Gap hunter green velvet dress at one of the shops for $12 bucks!! I love deals like that. Usually when I go in to one of the shops, I will only see one or two nice things, but with savings like that, it is so worth the trip. I also buy in larger sizes if I see something really great! I would check out a couple of your local consignment stores and perhaps pick up a dressy outfit or 2 and tell dh how much the outfit would have cost new, my guess is that he would get over it quick lol! & Grace > > > > Our son was born with bcf on 9/9/04. Guest guest
I always thought it was just the way it was everywhere but after my best friend moved to VA she was VERY disappointed to find that they weren't common there. So, she comes back to see her parents a few weekends each season! LOL Last weekend I went to two sales - spent $45 and got two of the big black garbage bags full of clothing. Included in that $45 is also several Barney videos, a few toys and two books. Gotta love that! The week before we went to one of my favorites (you learn which ones are generally good as time goes by) and I spent $65 and got two big bags, one med bag and three wallyworld bags of clothing. We also got some books, toys and a portacrib we needed to replace one we were returning to the person who lent it to us. I have three kids - my daughter who brings me here, a son 8 and a son 12. Both of the boys think hoodies and other fleece 'shirts' (like those with the short zipper and so on) are to die for and they love old navy so we find stuff that work for them there as well. On a humorous note - my daughter not only has club feet but also has a g-tube for feeding. Buying appropriate clothing to meet all of her needs can be difficult, especially when she had to wear the FAB all day, but we've almost got it downpat. Overalls, if they are cute of course, fit the bill so I'm working on collecting a nice wardrobe of both denim and other materials. I was buying quite a bit from one woman who had a wonderful selection that was in really good condition - got lots of flowered denim overalls, some dressier ones and a few fleecy ones - and she mentioned that I'd cleaned her out of them and it was nice to see that someone else liked girls in overalls. I said that I have boys first and loved overalls but with her feet and feeding needs, they worked beautifully for her, too. She smiled and shared that her daughter had the same issues and a few more. She was treated with the ponseti method by the same local ortho we initially saw and that her feet are beautiful! It always surprises me when I discover other clubfoot kids but I am beginning to realize it shouldn't at all. After we shared our common ground she threw in a few tops and other items that she knew worked well for her daughter's feeding issues and a few toys and didn't charge me for them! Gotta love that, too!!! Chris Re: : first pair of walking shoes-second that!! Thanks! > > > Our son was born with bcf on 9/9/04. He's now at the point where > he > > > wears them at night and during naps, but he's at daycare during > the > > > day. Guest guest
I agree! LOL Chris Re: : first pair of walking shoes-second that!! -- veering OT Thanks for the input. I can at least tell him " see, all these people do it!
