First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Mia. I am 43 years old and I live in Staten Island, NY. I am 5'8 " and weigh 310 lbs (ugh!!). I have been researching WLS for awhile and finally decided to go for it. I decided to go with the Docs at Mt. Sinai, because from what I have heard and read, they are the best. I originally made an appointment in April for Dr. Gagner, and was scheduled for Oct 3. I was not a happy camper. I had researched the surgery for many months and now that I finally decided to do it I had to wait another 6 months to see him!... Anyway, someone told me to make an appointment with Dr. Pomp since his schedule is not as busy. I did that and met with him on July 30. I thought he was nice, although he did try to switch me from the BPD/DS to the RNY ( I don't know why) so I came online again and did more research to decide which surgery I thought would be best for me. I decided on the BPD/DS and his nurse Irene scheduled me for surgery on October 29. I am really scared and nervous about the surgery as I'm sure most of you were. But what worries me more is that I don't know as much as I would like to know about Dr. Pomp. I am sure he is also a very skilled surgeon. But I have heard so much about Dr. Gagner and Dr. Herron, and not much at all about Dr. Pomp. I need to hear from some of his patients. If you are a patient of Dr. Pomp's and had BPD/DS surgery, could you please e-mail me and tell me about your experience with him? I really need to feel confident about my surgeon, I'm sure you all understand what I mean. Please e-mail me with responses to this post at my aol address so that I do not take up any more space on the message board. CaraMiaNYC@a... Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post and I appreciate any help that anyone out here can give me. Guest guest
Hi Mia. Sorry I don't know much about Dr. Pomp but wanted to introduce myself since I also live in Staten Island. My name is Sherry and am scheduled for surgery this Thursday with Dr. Macura. (He's in Staten Island) Originally, I also made my appointment with the Mt. Sinai Group, specifically Dr. Herron. I had about a 3 month wait until my consultation and during that time, I started thinking. Even though these doctors have an excellent reputation, how practical would it be to get there for follow-up visits and equally important, to take advantage of the support meetings. For me it would be impossible. I have a daughter in school and you know how long that trip would be not to mention the wait times. Also, there aren't express busses that go up there and parking is not good either. I found Dr. Macura through other Staten Island WLS people that I met online. He has an excellent staff, he's the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital North, they have a bariatric unit, he has two support groups, one for nutrition and one psych meeting for post -ops. The downside is that he only does open. For me, it is worth the sacrifice. Good luck with your journey.
